thadeatAof another of Tennessee's great
men. Col. Afcouw Ewixo, late of Nash
Title, Tennessee, expiredln this city at 2$
o’clock yesterday morning, after a brief
illness, at the age of fifty yean. He was
well known ill Tennessee; and throughout
the country, as a lawyer of eminence and
an orator and statesman of extended repu
tation. Among the distinguished men of
Tennessee few were so popular, *or had
gained a mare deeply rooted affection in
the hearts of his countrymen. The best
eridence of the high esteem of his fellow-
citizens and their confidence in his patri
otism and sound discretion, was his selec
tion, on more thaw one occasion, to fill
offices of high trust as their representative.
Ke was, at all timeS, recognized, regardless
of party or politic*, as one of the brighest
intellects of the State, while his reputation
as an Advocate, was not confined to the
limits of Tennessee. He was at one time
tbo Representative in the Congress of the
United States from the Bermitago district,
liaviog been elected over an opponent of
great popularity, in a district where the
votes of his own party were largely in the
minority-
- At the breaking out of the war he
poused the Southern cause, and left his
home to attach himself to the Tennessee
command of Gen. Forrest, with whom be
sewed as’chief of staff, and afterwards
witff Gen. Brag$, who mentioned him in
the highest terms of commendation in his
official reports. Heparticipated-in the bat

quent period, appointed chief of the eorps
court of Gen. Polk, nowof-Qen. Hardee’s
corpt, with the rank of Colonel, hy Presi
dent Davit. In all the various positions
he has been called upon to fill, he served
his country with the earnestness and de
votion of a true patriot.
Eminent in his profession as an advo
cate at the Ear, unsurpassed as a powerful
debater and reasoner on the hustings, of
extended influence among the

We tender to his bereaved relative*and

The funeral will take place from-Wesley

Every soul should be aroused
to the importance of the present straggle
and every nerve should be stretched

Fo'r this desperate charge the troops now

The troop* had to move ap n steep bill,
which was separated by a gentle valley,
partly clear, "from the slops ocenpied by the
enemy’s barrioads of logs, trees and nbattis.
About five in t-e afternoon the troops hav
ing gained the oreat, of the first hill, advanced
in co'nmns of double lines by brigades, thus
forming six lines of attaok. Helen's brigade
ocoupied the front, Willieh’a brigade, nnder
OoL Gibson, tho second, with Beatty’s brigade
in rear.
The division advanced in line ns far ss th*

The rebels, with one defiant cheer, hnrled a
regular shower ef bullets right into our faoes,
while two sections of batteries masked on our
flank opened'a converging defilading fire of
grope and canister along oar line*, crashing
oar broken, decimated lines. The first line
was d.iven in on Ihe second A ravins broke
the centre of onr floes, which materially in
tempted onr (remit. The troops being again
rallied, Beatty's brigade wheeled round to the
right; forming an elongation of onr line A
wild cheer rose from onr men, and again they
on in one desperate charge, hut were
met by another erashing volley, the sheet
flame from tho guns leaping into the men’s
faces, while grape nod canister and shell made
fesrfol roads through the surging lioa
Though onr men were dogged, determined, and
fought with stern and desperate resolve, still
no human power coaid sustain each n flro —
Hager’s noble brigade was reeling btek, shat

to hold their own The Third brigade of
Johnson’s division had token ap position on
the left, but wax ablt to render little effective

There was a dead silane* all along out
other lines; The very artillery ceieed firing,
Why was this. Why was there not a regular,
almnltaneoni attaok? Why was one noble di
vision left to straggle against overpowering
hosts nsd adverse oironmstnnoes? It jros one
fierce, continual firing. No pattering of bal
lets, bat ons oontlnaed roar of musketry ran
along the Unas for hours. The officers did ali
that men conld da—rallied, charged—bnt all
in vein; nearly two rebel divisions, in strong
entrenchments, were contending against that
.seven thousand men. Night was now falling,
and anr men fell baek to the valjey where
they first formed, and soon sent oat strong de
tails to bring in onr wounded and deed. These
wereohlefly from tbo 79th, 124th, 41st, and
1st Ohio. Tha rebels attacked them, jumped
from their breastworks, charged on them,
andsueceeded in taking about two hundred
prisoners, among them Colonel Paine, 12
Ohio. As oar line fell bsok the rebel bnt-
teries swept the toad and the valley. They
seemed to have perfect range of these posi
tions. I have not as yet ascertained our loss;
bnt I ezpeot this one division alone most have
had one thousand killed and wonnded. We
succeeded in bringing in onr dead. General
Wood remained np, collecting in his troops
and placing them in 0 position to meet the
iy, should they follow np their partial
ad and
the little Talley. The field was thickly strewn
with them that onr horses had to esntionily
piok their steps among them: The pallid fea
tures and glassy, glaring eyes of the dead
were tamed to the moon, whose soft light, now
glowing throngh the trees, bathed the valley
in mellow splendor. What did the moon eor*
for all tho groans and misery around ? Oh, is
there a Tartarus deep .and dreadful enough
for the authors of this unnatural war.
Gen- Howard remained on the ground until
all was safe. It was three o’eleek when Gen.
Wood threw himself upon the gronnd to sleep,
from wnieh he was soon disturbed by the hust
ling of com- shells throngh the trees over his
head. A .piece struck Gen. Johnson, of the
14th eorps, in the ride, seriouffly bnt not dan
gerously hurting him.
This day (28th) has pasted over with some

tV by Grant did not get tbs Komtnatloo
The New York Herald ha* a very bitter nr
tiole on the Times, of that oity, lor defeating
Grant in the Baltimore Convention, with the
help of Confederate bulleti. It says:
On Friday last an notion occurred before
Richmond, of whieh Gen. Grant gave the fol
lowing efficient account:
‘•We assaulted at half past four, driving, tbs
enemy within htt emrenshmsats at eU points,
but without gaining any decisive advantage.
Our troops now oconpy a position close to the
enemy—some places within fifty yards—and
are remaining Oar loci was not severe, nor
do I suppose the enemy to have lost heavily.
We captured over 800 prisoners, mostly from
Breckinridge.”
Gar own report?, and thosa of all the other
papers, including the first of ihe rapoftspub
lUhaJTiy the Times, give minor details of tbit
action, but do not d.ffer in regard to its main
feature3. On Tuesday morning, howover, th*
Timas .came but withe long oooouut of tho
battle, printed in the largest type, snd cover
ing over a page of the paper. This report
purported tobawiittsa byn literary man, who
olaims (0 bo considered a philanthropist, but
who has no praotioal knowledge of military
affairs. It reviews Grant’s campaign, rtc-
ol&rea that Friday’s hatlls was the. most im
portant of all, and argues that Gun. Grant
was very badly bested • and fife rebels un
doubtedly auccessful. Upon this report the
World bases a Copperhead article, attacking
lbs Union eatur, and it will unquestionably
bawisad by soooeaioniate abroad likewise to
help the cause of thoYabels.
Our readers will remember that the Balti
more Convention assembled oa the very mora
ipg that the Times published this report, and
we have no doubt that it wsa written at the
enggretion of,Chevalier Raymond to injur*
Gen. Grant and assist Mr. Linoblnln that Con
vention. The Times haaahows itself so utter
ly unscrupulous in its aSvocacy of Old Abe
that that theory la undoubtedly correct. If the
Times’ report be true, then Gen. Grant’s re
port mast be false. To suggest this and to
make oat that Grant was a bear on general, was
the objeot of the Times’ article. We base no
words adequate to express onr reprobation cf
such dishonest and maliaious political mat co
vering as this. For a paper jrofessing to be
loyal, it is simply abominable. Thq report is
calculated to aid and comfort the rebels aa'
well si the shoddy politicians, for whose ben
efit it is written. We nek a catdid comparison
between Grant’s report and tbe Times artiole,
and after making this ocmparilon no man can
resist the eonviolion that the Times has pros-
tituted its columns to the basest of slanders
upon onr greatest General, forth* purpose of
influencing the Baltimore Convention egainst
him, and that it presumes to impeach from his
generalship and his truthfulness. We know
of no more flagrant instance of the degeneracy
of the party press, nnd no move appropriate
means to assist the Times’ candidate for the
Presidency.
