CHRONICLE & SENTINEL. POETRT AND MISCELLANY From the iV. O. Picayune. Philosophy of the Times. Lei those who will, repine at fate, And droop their bends with sorrow, 1 laugh when enres upon me wait— I know they ’ll leave to-morrow. My purse is light but what of that ? My heart is light to match it; And if 1 tear my only coal, I laugh the while I patch it. ® some elves who called themselves My friends in summer weather. Blown far away, in sorrow’s day, As winds would blow a feather — I never grieved to see them go, (The rascals, who would heed ’em?) For what’s the use of having friends, It false when must you need ’em ? I’ve seen some rich in wordly gear, Eternally repining, Their hearts a prey to every fear With gladness never shining. I would not change my lightsome heart For all their gold and sorrow : For that’s a thing that all their wealth Can neither buy nor borrow. And still ns sorrows come to me, (As sorrows sometimes will come.) I find the way to make them llee. Is bidding them right welcome. They cannot brook a cheerful look— They’re used to sobs and sighing ; And he that meets them with a smde, la sure to set them flying. We are Growing Old.—by francs* known. We are growing old; how the thought will rise » hen a glance is backward cast On some long remembered spot that lies In the silence of the past: !‘ m *y t,e lh « shrine of our early vows. the tomb of early tears; But it seems like aW-off isle to ns, In the stormy sea of years. Oh, wide and wild are the waves that j»arf Our steps from its greenness now, And we miss the joy of many a heart And the light of many a brow ; For deep e’er many a stately bark Have the whelming billows rolled. That steered with ua from that early mark—- Oh, friends, we are growing old, Old in the dimness and the dust Ol our daily toils and cares, Old in the wrecks of love and trust Which our burdened memory bears. Each form may wear to the passing gare The bloom of life’s freshness yet, And beams may brighten our latter days. Which the morning never met. But oh, the changes we have seen, In the far and winding way ; The graves in our path that have grown green. And the locks that have grown gray ! The winter still on our own mav spare The sable or the gold : But we saw their snows upon brighter hair— And, friends, we are growingold. have gained the world’s cold wisdom now. c have learned to |iause and fear ; But where are the living founts whose flow Was a joy ol heart to hear? W e have won the wealth of many a clime, And the lore of many a page ; Bui where is the hope that saw in time But its boundless heritage ? Will it come again when the violet wakes, And the woods their youth renew ? We have stood in the light of sunny brakes Where the bloom was deep and blue ; And our souls might joy in the spring-time then But the joy was faint and cold, For it ne'er could give us the youth a<raiii Ol hearts that arc growing old. From the Georgia Telegraph. Burial of George Lincoln— who pull at BUKNA VISTA. -* N O, hear ye not the slow and mournful tread Os mighty hosts, which are now passing by / To the cold grave, they bear the noble dead, With grief a! heart and tears in every eve. The solemn silence of the awful scene, The arms reversed, the standards shrouded now. Which late have waved amid the battle din, When on that plain the numerous haughty foe, Fought long and bravely to resist the might Os Freedom’s sons, then eager for the war- - These blood-stained trophies of that horrid fight Are mourning now above his funeral car. on gray haired chief is bending o’er the bief, And weeps big tears for his untimely late ; So sudden checked in glory’s bright career. Brave Lincoln fell, the hope of all his State. Slowly they bore him to a soldier’s grave, While ever and anon the booming roar’ Os heavy guns, the solemn signal gave, That now the brave and val’rous was no niorA. Tho v left him sleeping in the silent tomb, ith his good sword, which he had nobly Worn Upon the field in pride of youthful bloom, Nore’eu in death, could it from him be tom. His sable plume is still above his head, And shields the ghastly paleness of his face The tear - t hn soldiers o’er his tomb have shed, Bedew ;! e sod upon his resting place. * Then kneh a comrade by the hallowed moiimi. Whose sun burnt cheeks the tears of grief bedew ; His dearest friend, when his last wish had bound, When his bright spirit bade the world adien To seeic Ins sire, and as his last farewell To tell him that his son had nobly fought For fame and country, and then nobly fell Rather than yield. His soul abhorred tlif thought Now o'er his grave they fire the farewell s hot, Again the cannon opes its ihund’ring roar ; Then silent all they leave the mournful spa, Where honored Lincoln sleeps forever uaore. Then lei the brave recline upon the eart) i, Whicli be had scorned to yield but v;ith his life, His countrymen shall e’er regret his v.orth, When they shall think of Buena V Vita’s strife. Let aged parents cease to mourn ’ais death, Columbia’s soil can boast no brave r son ; Then twine for him no gloomy cypress wreath, But give the laurels that his valor won ! J. A. H. Population of the United States. In 1800 the total population was •••5,305,900 Increase tu 10 years 1,933,900 In 1810 it was 9,239,800 Increase in 10 years 2,414,800 In 1620 it was 9,654,600 Increase in 10 years 3,211,400 In 1630 it was 12,866,000 Increase in 10 years 4,634,000 In 1840 it was -17,500,00 » Increase in 10 years - • 5,800,000 In 1860 it will be 23,300 000 Increase in 10 years 7,500,000 In 1360 it will be 30.800,000 Increase in 10 years 10,200,000 fa 1970 it will be 41,000,000 Increase in 10 years 13,^00,000 In 1380 it will be 54,600.000 Increase in 10 years 18,000,000 In 1990 it will be 72,600 000 Increase in 10 years 23,400,000 In the year 1900 it will no doubt be 96,00u,000 The average increase of population in this country every ten years from 1790 to 1840, has been a fraction less than oue-third of the pre ceding population, and on this principle the above estimation is made. There can be no question of its general accuracy, as we have now an immense prairie country open for cul tivation, which in IrJlO we had not. Ninety-six millions in the year 1900, will be but 48 persons to the square mile, which is not a quarter of what this immensely productive country could support. It would then give a farm of one hundred acres to every eight per sons, which is a thin population. Ireland has a population of *250 to the square mile; England and Wales, 30*2, and Belgium 330. For the next succeeding one hundred years, up to the year 2000, the population will proba bly not increase in the same rapid ratio, yet if no dire calamity should disturb the prosperity of the country, there can be no doubt of its population being two or three hundred millions in one hundred and filly years from 1850. To enable the States that must ultimately compose this immense Republic to maintain in their bond of union, railroads will have to be constructed across the Rocky Mountains, other wise that portion of our conquering race, on the Pacific at least, will most unquestionably govern themselves. It has been maintained that the extension of territory has a tendency to enfeeble the nation, and under the ancient order of things there can be no doubt of its truth, as it is manifest in the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, Ac. f but as the light of science lias given us railroads, and modern philosophy a Language of Lightning, by which a gentleman in Oregon can pats the question of annexation to a lady in New York, and receive an answer in five minutes, we can have no fear of being caught asleep by any enemy on earth, even if our territory embrace all North America, which will, no doubt, fee our ultimate destiny.— Y. Tee. Mirror. Bx.vsett, of the New York Herald, iti a recent correspondence, thus speaks of the condition of England: 44 The aristocracy maintain 400,000 servants —200,000 horses, 500,000 dogs. 100,000 grouse, and 500,000 game of all kinds, all to minister to their pride and pleasure. These men, beasts, and birds consume the food of idleness, which would feed the starving Irish, and others of the lower class. Here is the dangerous condition that is increasing in magnitude every year, and reaches a crisis whenever any of the crops fail. 44 In a population of 27,000,000, which is nearly the number of the three kingdoms, only about 800,000, are electors, while 43,000 persons hold all the land of the Empire, including moun tains, hills, rocks, rivers, moors.” Mas, says the Cleveland Herald, is a reason ing animal who paints with sunbeams, travels fey steam, talks by lightning, speculates in cut * nezi' ‘ swaps jackets and jack- The wife of Capl. Interesting Incident.—A letter from an officer in Mexico, to his family in Now York, giving u glowing account of the hard fought battles and glorious victories in and about the city of Mexico, includes the following soul-stir ring incident: * * * “I rejoice in the glorious laurels which the Rifles have won. It is, as all acknow ledge, the fighting Regiment of the Army It entered Chapulteper simultaneously with the storming parly. It was first in all the enemy’s works from Chapulteper. to the citadel. It was the first that entered the city, and first planted its triumphant banner on the Palace of the Mon tezuma's. Wherever bloody work was to be done, * The Rifles ’ was the cry, and there they were. All speak of them in terms of praise and admiration. Let me give you but a single instance Some of their officers and men were standing together when Gen Scott happened to ride by. ('becking his horse, he returned their salute, saying, with great energy and em phasis. —'* Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in flrr and blood, and have conic out steel!” Had you seen the unbidden tear steal ing to the eyes of those rough hut gallant spirits, whose hearts knew no fear, and who had never yet in the long trial faltered or fallen hack, while their flashing eyes and upright forms bespoke its truth, you would have felt with me that such words as those wiped out long months of hard ship and suffering. ” Utaretymsc*.
