From what we have hemd singe the
arrival of the.highly .intelligent agent, late
ly returned from Constantinople with the
Turkish treaty, there is every reason to
believe, that a more judicious and fortu
nate selection could not have hern made
than Commodore Porter,-for that deiicatv
and important trust. . Notwithstanding
the disadvantages with which It is mission
4i«d to contend, ill conseqttenco of tho
difficulties interposed by the Senate to the
arrangements of the Executive, forgiving it
complete effect, which undoubtedly subject
ed the Commodore ntid itis country to
tome disparagement, yet the circumstan
ces oT bis being a distinguished officer of
that marine, which- was known to the
Tusks to have subdued the powers of Al
giers and Tripoli, and contended success
fully with the greatest maritime Empire of
Europe, well nigh supplied the want of
that higher grade of office, whiclt the
Sublime Porte nxpects in tlte representa
tives of Foreign Stales at Constantinople.
Although the mission differs somewhat of
ficially because of Commodore Porter’s
deficiency of adequate rsnk, yet- he was
received with the utmost cmrdinlity and
erspeet ; the Commander in Chief of the
Turkish navy,.in particular, paying him
fbo highest attention. Through the Com-
tnotAl’o’i sagacity nnd firmnoss,’ seconded
hy the uncommon intelligence nnd know!-

a gentleman—-whom Mr. Van Boren hart
