Montgomery, Ala. y November 23, 1839.
This may certify, that I have this year planted
the “Ckra or Twin otton,” and seen it growing
in various other places. From the observation of
others, as well as my own, 1 have no hesitancy in
recommending it as the most productive Cotton 1
have ever seen on thin land, —its yield from the
Gin head, and the quality of its staple, very far
exce.ls the Petit Gulf or Mexican Cotton. If
planted in three feet rows, 1 believe it capable of
producing bOUClbs. per acre. J. H. Taylor.
This will certify, that 1 planted a small quantity
of the Okra or Twin Cot.on, and believe it capab e
of pioiiucing if properlv planted, 3000 to 35001b5.
per acre. 1 made t e following experiment as to
its yield from the Gin bead; 4zsibs. Okra Cotton
produced 1561b5. lint, —4251b5. Petit Gulf Cotton
produced 1241fis. lint, making 32105. lint from that
quantity in favor of the Okra Cotton. 1 not only
believe this cotton vastly superior in product to
the Petit Gulf, but much so in the quality of its
staple ; it also matures much earlier.
November 23, 1839 Jesse P. Taylor.
This may certify, that I planted fths of an acre
in the “Okra or Twin Cotton,” from which 1 have
picked lOOOlbs.of cotton, of a very superior qua.ity,
and which land 1 do not believe capab e of pro
ducing over 300 to 6001bs per acre of the Petit
Gulf or Mexican Cotton, owing to its thirsty na
ture. The great advantage of tne t kra or Twin
Cotton u,.on -uch land is its long tap root, w’hich
is from two to three times the length of the o.di*
nary « otton. J. W. T. Reid, Shff, M. C.

Montgomery, November 23, 1839.
This will certify,-—1 have seen the “ Mutti-bolled,
Twin, Okra, or Bluster Cotton” growing in this :
vicinity, and believe it not only superior in product. »
but in staple, to any other cotton 1 have ever seen, ;
except the Sea Is and, or Black Seed.

Montgomery, November 26, 1839.
Having been called upon to certify (officially)as
to the character and standing of the gentlemen
whose names are to the above certificates, relative
to the Okra or Twin Cotton, it affords me pleasure
to certify that they are gentlemen of respectability
and high standing it society, and most of them
practical planters, and in whose opinions upon
the Okra or Twin Cotton I fully concur, having
made a small experiment with it, which has fu !}•
satisfied me of the great advantages it possesses

principal Academy in Augusta, and the branch at
Sumrnervide, have resumed their exercises, under
the management of Teachers who have the full
confidence of the Trustees, and who, they are sa

Mr. Eknenputsch. the Rector of the Academy
already favorably known to the community, has
charge of the Classical department and all the
branches of education requr.-ite for admission to
our best Colleges. His attainments as a scholar
and success in imparting useful knowledge, emi
nently qualify him for the discharge of the im
portant duties of h;s station.
Mr. Ring, the principal English Teacher re
cently engaged by the Board, comes with the high
est lecommenda ions as to character, talents, lite
rary attainments and skill in teaching, and the
Trustees feel assured that he will sustain the re
putation which led to his selection.
The branch of the Academy at Summerville is
under the immediate management of Mr. Frank
lin George, a gentleman of experience in teach
ing, and highly recommended. The advantage of
the location ol this branch of the Academy in one
of the most healthful neighborhoods in the State
and sufficiently remote from the unfavorable in
fluence of a crowded town, are too well known to
need comment.
On the whole, the Board confidently recommend
to the public the principal \cademv and the Branch
at Summerville, as being on a better footing than
tney have heretofore been, and promising great
usefulness to those who may avail themselves of
the advantages which they offer.
