Dr. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and does not belong to the family of quack medicines; for the reason that the component parts are made known to the faculty, or any one else that may wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting to be made from The stalk, a thing not more aosuiu than for one to offer meal from the corn stalk, to say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato so far North. Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the Tomato Pills 'proper) for the great benefits of which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they profess to be, snd will do for otheis what they have done for such as mav have used them; as this is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will doubtless be valuable information to families to know that the Yellow are just doubly as valuable as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the system in much better condition than the other kind; many will recollect with what trembling anxiety calomel has been given to children, and how they then wished for a substitute. It has long been known that the Tomato contained ca thartic principles, but not until of late was it ascertained that they contained alterative and diu retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that they know what it is Were it a patent mystery, they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they justly do the ore thousand and one cure-alls of the day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a , mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in this city. J. Robertson & Co., for the treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these ustly celebrated instruments. He has now used them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy forbid, he could name several persons who have been radi cally cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many | others who are in a fairway of being entirely re ! lieved. The following is the language of the *com j mittee o 1 the Philadelphia Medical Society on the , Radical Cure ol‘ Hernia. “ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected | the permanent and accurate retention of the in testines in every case of Hernia observed by the , committee, without material inconvenience to the patient, and often under trials more severe than are usually ventured upon by those who wear other trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any other apparatus known to the committee.” “ The committee are induced by the foregoing conclusions to recommend, in strong terms, the in struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of the profession, as the best, known means of me chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the highest chances of radical cure.” The following is from the Southern Medicafand Southern Journal, published in our own city. “ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia, ami that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best yet invented to effect the object.” Persons from a distance can have the instruments applied, upon application at the office, and all nel cessary information given to enable them to adjust it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under tins afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous ly upon presenting a certificate, from someresponsi ble person, of their pecuniary'disability'. SPOHN, a German physician of much note, having devoted his attention for some years to the cure and removal of the esuses of NER VOUS AND SICK HEAD ACHE, has lhe satis faction to make known, that he has a remedy which by removing the causes cures effectually and perma nently this distressing complaint. There are raany families who have considered Sick Headache a con stitutional incurable family complaint- Dr. S. as sures them that they ore mistaken, and labouring under dislress which they might not only alleviate, but actually eradicated by the if his remedy. It is the result of scientific research, and is entirely of a different character from advertised patent medi cines, and is not unpleasant to the taste. HEADACHE, SICK OR NERVOUS. The extraordinary reputation that Dr. Spohn’s remedy for this distressing compainl is every day gaining is certainly a matter of much astonishment, That so m ich suffering should have existed for ages without any discovery of an effectual preventive, or cure, is truly a subject of much regret but Dr. S. now assnres the public that such a remedy has been invented as will convince the most credulous. The principles on which it acts are simple and plain. It is an a mined fact that this complaint, whether called Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim- 1 arily from the stomach—those who think they have | the Nervous Headache may rest assured that this organ, the stomach, is the first cause, that th Q sys- f tern has become vitiated or debilitated, thiough the I stomach, and that only through the same channel j must they expects restoration of the natural and ! healthy functions of the system. This object, Dr. : , Spohn’s remedy is eminently calculated to attain. The truth of this position cannot be controverted, and the sooner sufferers with the headache become convinced of it, the sooner will their suffering end in restoration of health, Dr. Spohn pledges his 1 professionai reputation on this fact. They have passed away from the hundreds that are daily launched upon the tide ot experiment, and now stand before the pu tc as high in reputation, and as extensively employed in all parts of the United States, the Canadas, iexas Mexico, and the West Indies, as any medicine that has ever been prepared for the relief of suffering man. They have been introduced wherever it was found possible to carry them ; and there are but few towns that do not contain some remarkable evidences of theirgoed effects. The certificates that have been presented to the prepnetor exceed twenty thousand! upwards of five hundred o which are from regular practising physicians, who are the most competent judges ot their merits. • Often have the cures performed by this raedtem been the subject of editorial comment, in vanou newspapers and journals; and it may with truth be asserted, that no medicine of the kin 1 has ever re ceived testimonials of greater value thm are at tached to this. . They are in general use as a family medicine and there axe.thousands of families who declare they ' re never satisfied until they have a supply always on hand. . , „ They have no rival in curing and preventing Billious Fevers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver Complaints, Sick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma, Dropsy, Rheumatism, Enlargement ol the Spleen, Piles, Cholic, Female Obstructions, Heartburn, Furred Tongue, Nausea, Distension of the Stomach and Bowels, Incipient Diarrhoea,Flatulence,Habitu al Costiveness, Loss of Appetite, Blotched or Sallow- Complexion, and in cases of torpor of the bowels, where a cathartic or aperient is needed They are exceedingly mild in their operation, producing neither nausea, griping nor debility. The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by a highly respectable Planter of Wake County, No j Ca., March 3d, 1838: Dr. Peters —Dear Sir, —Byrequestof your agent, f Mr. Harrison, I send you a few lines respecting the almost miraculous effects of your piPs; and 1 would add, that you may make use ol them, in connection with my name, in any manner y r ou deem proper, I speak of their merits from experience, as I and my family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three years ; and so great aee the benefits we have receiv ed from them in general, that I would rather pur chase them at ten dollars abox than have my house without them. I will not enumerate the afflictions they have relieved us of; but I can assure you they were many, and of very opposite natures, which has fully proved to me that your medicine is a sim ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally the enemy of every disease. I will mention one case. I have a sister w r ho had been for a long pc- i riod severely' afflicted with dropsy in the chest and was brought by it to the very verge of the grate. She was attended by the most eminent physicians that money- could procure; but all their efforts to restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer ings were fruitless ; and accordingly,we all consid ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex pecting every day to be her last, your pills were introduced into my family-, and so speedy- and pal pable were their effects that three doses visibly re lieved her, and in less than three months she was perfectly restored to health. This case, I and all ! who were witness of it, (but more especially the ! suffering party,) considered to be the next thing to j miraculous; and y-et I could mention many more! of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills were equally- successful in rescuing the patients ! from the jaws of death. Need 1 add that the popu- j larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in j this section of the country ? But this I presume { you know from the immense quantity- you dispose i of 1 may mention, however, that notwithstanding | its general use, I never heard an individual complain ; of its effects. My residence is 12 miles from RaJ- ; leigh, on the road to Fayetteville. 1 am, with sen timents of regard, your ob’t servant. A. G. BANKS. To Dr. Peters, —Sir —For upward 0 of fifteen months, 1 have been cruelly afflicted with Fever and Ague; and during the time could find nothing— though 1 had applied to every thing that gave me any thing like permanent relief. At length, how- ; ever, your pills were recommended to me, by one 1 of our best physicians, and I am most grateful and happy in being able to add, that I had scarcely used ' two boxes when I found that they- had restored me j to perfect health. Since then, various members of i my family have used them with equal success — i and consequently- I feel it my duty to apprise you j of the fact, and to request of you to publish this certificate, as lam anxious to add my public testi mony to the almost miraculous virtues of y-our un rivalled medicine. Respectfully yours, THEODORE JAMES. Augusta, Ga., Feb 10, 1839. Communication received from the eminent Dr. J. H. Irwin of Florence, Georgia: Dr. J. P. Peters—My Dear Sir —On the night of the llthinst.,l was called in great haste to the i house of a fellow citizen, (Mr. Lee,) where I found his son laboring under a most alarming attack of | Cynanche Tracnealis (Cronp) and apparently be- ! yond the aid of remedy. By the greatest good for- I tune, however, I had in my pocket a broken box of your pills—four of which I administered, with such immediate happy effect that in a few minutes ray patient was at ease, and out of danger. This case,in connection with my name is at your ser vice—and I have the pleasure to be able to inform you that your inestimable medicine is in such great favor with the faculty here, that I believe there is not one of them who does not use it in his private practice. June 3 mHE great celebrity of this unrivalled Compo | aition, especially in,the Northern States, leaves the proprietor but little need to say any thing in its favor: for it has been generally conceded to it, that it is beyond all comparison the best remedy for ex ternal complaints that has ever been discovered. Indeed the'spced and certainly of its operations, have the appearance of miracles : as ulcers, wouuds, corns, fever sores, chilblains, white swellings, biles, piles, spider and snake biles, &c. &c., immediately yield to its superhuman influence. Thus, if prop erly applied it will remove an inveterate corn or break and heal a bile in live days, will allay and perfectly cure an ulcer in two weeks, and the most j desperate casesut white swelling that can be ima -1 gired.have been destroyed by it in less than two I months. In the bites of poisonous reptiles its effi j cacy is truly surprising, and if applied in time, its ! powers of attraction are so wonderful that they will 1 at once arrest the poison and thus prevent it from pervading the system. It is likewise greatly supe rior to any medicine heretofore discovered for the chafed back and limbs of horses —for tetters, ring worms, chapped lips—and in short, for every exter nal bodily evil that may fall to the lot of man or beast. The proprietor has received at least a thousand certificates, and other documents, in favor of his “ Specific Ointm nf,” upwards of a hundred of w’hich w r ere written by respectable members of the Medical Faculty. Albany, July 9ih, 1837. To Dr. Harrison. Sir —I use your Specific Ointment in my practice, and cordially recommend it as a most efficient reme civ for Tumors, Ulcers Whiie Swellings, Scrofula, Rheumatic Pains, Chapped Face, Lips and Hands: and for general external complaints. 1 write this ai the request of your agent here, who furnishes me with the article, and am pleased to have it in my power to award honor to merit. RUFUS K. BEACH, M. D. Brooklyn, N. Y., Oet. 29, 1838. Dear Sir—My daughter,a girl of fourteen, was sadly afflicted witn thecorap aim that physicians termed a scald head ; and 1 feared, indepe dent of every other evil, that she would be bald in conse : quence. By the recommendation, however, of the : Reverend Mr. Perrin, I applied your ointment to the ! afflicted part; and i thank God that my child is now entirely recovered from the disease, and is | getting her hail as fast as can be expected The j cure was effected in lather less than two months; ! during which lime I used fiv dollars worth of oint j menl; I had spent upwards of a hundred dollars duting the previous three years, without any benefit 1 whatever. MATTHEW PERRIN. Boston, Jan. 7, 1837. Dear Sir—l nave to request of yon to forward j me, two hundred boxes of Ointment, by the most , immediate conveyance, and without regard to the I expense of carnage, as lam quite out, and much ! in want of it. —You know my estimation of your j valuable discovery, and therefore J shall only add, | tnat further « xperience has increased m> enthusi asm and established me in the opinion, that it is su perior to any remedy extant for external diseases. Respectfully yours, CHARLES P. EMERSON, M. D. New Orleans, Match 20th, 1838. Dr. Harrison. Sir—The virtues of your Specific Ointment, have been long known to me,as 1 have used none other in my rather extensive practice lorseveral years, and if you think it would be to your advantage, I can furnish you with twenty certificates of important j cures w hich it has effected under my own imme diate inspection: the last being one of a severe | and apparently perpetual nicer,in the back of a poor woman, Mary Baxter who resides in 216 Di vision street, which it completely heeled in twenty one days. My present chief ob|ect in w riting to you, is to learn who is your authorised agent, in this city, for, being in want us a supply of your oint ment, and the person Mr. Boyle, from whom I useid to purchase it, having failed and gone out of busi ness, I am fearful if 1 purchase at random, that I may be imposed on by a counterfeit. Your obedient servant, EDWARD RA3ISEY, M. D. Cincinnati, August 9,1837. Dr. Harrison. Sir, —I have no hesitation in stating, in reply to yournote, that your 4 * Specific Ointment” is truly equal to the majority of the ends for which you re commend it. 1 qualify my certificate by the word majority, as it is my maxim to give no opinion in medical matters where I have had no experience. j In sprains, bruises, inflammations, eruptions, whit i lows, piles, &c., it is m v universal recipe. I have also used it on the leg of a boy which had been bitten by an adder, and the extraction of the poison, Qnd ultimate cure was so rapid, that my patient was at. well as ever in a week ; and has remained so to i this day Yours respectfully, HENRY JACOBS, M. In all the various cases of languor lassitude, and debilitation ; it is an unfailing reme’ dy ; as it is equally its province to impart ness and decision to the mind, as health and vigrjf to the body But the peculiar virtue on which m celebrity is based, is the facility and certainty with which it restores the virile powers when they hav# been destroyed by disease.time, recklessness, orarty of the numerous causes which terminate in the proslration of those functions. In common with the generality of really good medicines, ihis v ordial contains nothing of a rr.tr curial or deleterious nature, among the many ingre. dients which compose it ; but is, at ihe same rime, so simple, yet so efficacious, that while it can reno vate the prooirated energies of a giant, an infant may use it,not only wilh impunity, but with ad vantage. The usages of society are unfortunately suSH, that, notwithstanding the benefits which would be sure to result from it, we cannot enter into an anaiv sis ol this inestimable Cordial here, or publisu rnariy of the documents which have been received, as vouchers of the blessings it has conferred on nura bersof despairingmdividnals. But this we cannot forbear remarking—that it has been demonstrated that there is scarcely ever, it any such thing at all, as natural barrenness, or as natural imbecility of the procreant fund ions, in either sex ; and therefore, that, those evils are the effects of artificial causes, I and may be speedily subdued and removed by the use ol 44 Le Cordial de Lucine.” The Lucina Cordial is also an indubitable cure for the Gleet, and i he Fluor A Ibus, obstructed, diffi. cult, or painful Menstruation ; also, for the incon tinence ol Urine,or the involuntary discharge there, of. It is likewise an invaluable and unrivalled medicine in cases of Chronic Eruptions of theskin, and in the dropsical affections ot the aged.
