AN ORDINANCE to regulate the Bridges across
the Savannah River, opposite the city of Augusta:
BE it Ordained by the City Council of Augus
ta, and it is hereby ordained by the authori
ty of the same, That His Honor the Mayor and
four Members of Council, one of whom shall be
appointed from each ward, shall be appointed im
mediately after the passage of this Ordinance, and
shall! constitute a Committee to superintend and
manage the lower Bridge and the upper Bri Ige,
across the Savannah River, opposite the City of
or such interest as the City Council of Au
gusta may at any time have in either, until such
time as the standing annual Committees of said
Council shall be appointed, at which time, ai d an
nually thereafter, a Committee constituted as above
provided, shall be appointed for the purposes afore
said. And all such Committees, shall, at all times,
during their respective terms of service, have full
power and authority to contract for the repairing
of said Bridges, to supeiintend such repairs, and
generally to superintend the management thereof.
And be it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid. That it shall be the duty of the Collector
and Treasurer of the City of Augusta, to demand
and receive from the Keepers of the Bridges sever
ally, once a week, or oftener if required to do so by
the Committee on the Budges, all moneys collected
from tolls, and to deposit the same in such one of
the Banks of the city of Augusta, as the said com
mittee may direct; and he is hereby reqired, to
keep the funds so received, separate and distinct
from all other funds of the said City Council, and to
make monthly reports to the said City Council of
such receipts and deposil.es.
And be it further ordained by the authority afore
said, That all moneys received in payment of tolls
at said bridges, shall be and the same arc hereby
set apart and exclusively appropriated to the fol
lowing objects, that is to say. First, to the payment
of interest, semi-annually falling due, upon the
bonds of the City Council of Augusta, issued in
payment for said bridges, to Gasaway B. Lamar, or
bearer thereof, dated o:a the twenty-first day of
January, in the year eighteen hundred and forty,
and bearing an annual interest of eight |>er cent.
Secondly, to the creation of a fund for the eventual
payment of the principa lof said bonds; Provided
that the surplus of any half year’s income from
said bridges, after payment of the interest afore
said, may be loaned at interest or profitably in vest
ed, as the said City Council may direct, for the bet
ter accomplishment of the secondary object herein
before specified. And provided, also, that any
such surplus may at any time be used to redeem or
purchase said bonds, or any of them before their
maturity, if deemed advisable by the said Council
And be it further ordained by the authority afore
said, That the keeper or keepers of said bridge or
bridges, shall be employed or dismissed at the dis
cretion of said committee.
And that the said City Council shall from time to
time, regulate and estabush the rates of toll, for
passing or repassing said bridge or bridges, which
rates of toll shall be uniform at both bridges.

OF LAND AND NEGROES.
IN conformity to a decree of theCouct of Equity,
will be sold on Tuesday, the 4th of February
next, all that Plantation on Savannah river, coiii
taining fourteen hundred acres more or less, ad
joining lands of John Mosely, Silas Lanier, and
others, and lying immediately on the river below
the mouth of Stephens’ creek ; one third of which
is'cleared and in good repair and in a fine state for
immediate cultivation ; appurtenant to which is a
valuable fishery, at Bull Slice. This tract will be
sold entire, or in lots, to suit the convenience of
purchasers.
The above property is distant seven miles from
Hamburg, by the Martintown road, and has b< en
found to be as healthy as any in the countay.
Also, that valuable Plantation on Stephens*creek
and the Martintown road, well known as the Key
place, containing about nine hundred acres.

ham and others.

The above sale will commence on the day abqve
mentioned, at the river plantation, and continue
from day to day until finished.
Terms of sale.— The lands will be sold on a
credit of one and two years, with interest from day
of sale, and possession given immediately; the ne
groes for one-fourth cash, and the balance on a
credit until the Ist day of January r IS4I.
For all other property—sums under one hiuuired
dollars, cash. Same over that amount, a credit of
welve months* without interest.
