Seymour, Thomas, VAN BLKEN.”
The enemies of Mr. Van Buren have denied
him one quality which he possesses in an emi
nent degree—that of courage. In “ treading in
the footsteps of his illustrious predecessor,” he
has exhibited no signs of faltering. A Sovereign
State has gone by the hoard, and he shows no
signs of alarm. Hen. Jackson, in his prime, nev
er dared to do a deed so bold. Hundr* Is and
thousands of American citizens have been til.-
fr nehised by an Executive edict, issued, no
d übt, in secret, to be carried into effei-' by the
Clerk of this House, and the party here, by which
a State lose< live out of six of her Representa
tives, for the sole purpose of giving the President
and his party the power to rule this House, and,
through the action of this House, to secure his
re-election. Is not this a monstrous usurpation 1
Has history any parallel 1 Tyrants have dissolv
ed legislative bodies by fence of arms, but here
the President wills it, and it is done almost with
out a struggle.
Mr. Speaker, I have said it, and I repeat it here,
elected as I was by the State rights party of Geor
gia to a seat in this House, on the principle that
I stood in opposition to this Adminis*ration—
elected by a party opposed to Mr. Van iiuren—
opposed to measures enumerated by ne in this
elfirt in behalf of my constituents as belonging
to him— l cannot consent to be counted among
those who follow his Administration, übd I seek
this early opportunity to “ define my position- ’
that I may not be suspected by any man living.
A man like me, Mr. Speaker, who has ever
been accustomed to roam at large in the beauti
ful forests of his own. his native land, uncontroll
ed even by parental authority, cannot submit to
be harnessed with the shackles of party and col
lared with Van Burenism. No. sir; no, sir. I
will go against this Administration as long as it
goev wrong, and when it goes right I will go
home.
[Some member replied, you will remain here
a long time, my dear sir.]
If I were compelled to take r’des in the contest
between William Henry H irrison and Martin
Van Buren, I would not hesitate to support the
man who declared in 1835, that the conduct of
the abolitianists was “ weak, injudicious, pre
sumpfuous, and. unconstitutional and that,
to», in a non s’aveholding State, and to a non
sUvehold'ng people. The man who wtood by
Missouri—the General who protected ihe great
vjlly of the Mississippi by his deeds of .|alor, and
secured to its inhabitants peace anil protection
in place of danger and alarm—such a man is
General Hurrrison. And, .f I were to. conceal
mr preference for him over Mr. Van |Juren, I
smuld act uncandidly to my friends, ar|l dishon
; tstly with myself. He pronounced thje efforts
of the abolitionists unconstitutionat: I am
proud to call his opinion to aid m} own. Hence
Isay, refuse to receive these abominable peti
tions, end disregard these fanatics.

A REAL BLESSING TO MOTHERS
DR. W. EVANS' CELEBRATED SOOTHING
SYRUP, for Children Cutting their Teeth.— This
infallible remedy has preserved hundreds of chil
dren, when thought past recovery, from convul
sions. As soon as the Syrup is rubbed on the
gums, the child will recover. The preparation is
so innocent, so elDcacious and so pleasant, that no
child will refuse ta let its gums be rubbed with it.
When infants are at the age of four months, though
there is no appearance of teeth, one bottle of the
Syrup should be used on the gums, to open the
pores. Parents should never be without the Syrup
in the nursery where there are young children ; fox
if a child wakes in the night with pain in the gums,
the Syrup immediately gives ease, by opening the
pores nnd healing the gums; thereby preventing
convulsions, fevers, &c. Sold only at Dr. Win.
Evans' Medical Office, 100 Chatham street, New
York, where the Doctor maybe consulted on all
diseases of children.
PROOF POSrriVE OF THE EFFICACY OF
Dr. EVANS' SOOTHING SYRUP.—To the Agent
of Dr. Evans' Soothing Syrup: Dear Sir —The
jreat benefit afforded to my suffering infant by

rainful dentition, must convince every feeling pa
enthow essential an early application of such an
i ivaluable medicine is to relieve infant misery and
iarture. My infant, when teething, experienced
juch acute sufferings, that it was attacked wiih
convulsions, and my wife and family supposed that
death would soon release the babe from anguish,
till we procured a bottle of yeor Syrnp; which as
soon as applied to the gums, a wonderlul change
was produced, anc. after a few applications the
child displayed obvious relief, and by continuiug in
its use, 1 am glad to inform you the child has com
pletely recovered, and no recurrence of that awful
complaint has since occurred; the teeth are ema
nating daily and the child enjoys perfect health.
I give you my cheerful permission to make this
i acknowledgment public, andwill gladly give any
information on this circumst; nee.

He was a race horse of the first order, but 1 lear
