Cotton. —Since our last report we have received
17,153 bales; and shipped to Liverpool 11,274
bales; to Havre 3,379; to New Yorkss3 ;to Pro
vidence 286; to Baltimore 125 ; to Richmond 131 ;
and to New Orleans 893 ; making in all 16,651
bales; at d leaving a stock on hand not cleared of
184,955 bales. At the corresponding period last
season, the total receipts were 236,403 bales ; the
exports 165,426 bales; and the stock 71,036.
\\ e have had continued rains since our last,
which has in a measure retarded operations, and
prevented samples of the late arrivals being put on
the market. Sales, however, have been quite re
spectable considering the limited stock on sale —
averaging about 3000 daily. Holders have mani
fested a firmer feeling each succeeding day. Buy
ers acceding to their pretensions in a ratio with
the advanced rates of exchange, and decline in

Freights. —Since our last, the arrival of several
vessels, and the expectation of more, have enabled
shippers to effect a decline in freights ; and a num
ber of engagements have been formed for Liver

ward tendency in the former. In coastwise there
is not so material an alteration. We quota last

Exchange —Since we last waited upon our cus
tomers with remarks upon this head, bills on the
Eastward have been gradually advancing. Ex
change of approved character is very scarce, and
drawers demand advanced rates almost daily. We
have heard of no transactions in sterling bills. —
New Orleans funds are again much enquired for.
Specie brisk at 7 per cent, and but little offering.
Many well informed persons express surprise at an
advance of rates of exchange, notwithstanding the
extent of the cotton crop, and the fact that a large
part of it has been carried forward. We offer no
speculations ourselves to account for the existing
state of things, other than the low price of our
great staple, and a larger indebtedness to the'East,
on the part of the cotton producing region, than
has hitherto been supposed.
