Cotton. Since our last review the fe iturcs of the
cotton market have undergone trie or no material
alteration; prices, it is true, ha ; been very fluctu

maintained. The sales were inimated, and ex- j
ceeded considerably those of ie previous report.
Throughout tiie week a fevi ish slate of uncer- j
tainty prevailed among open ms, lespecting the i
markets abroad, and the last a vices received, just
previous to this dale, were no in any degree cal- j
ciliated to improve ti e t ne o confidence, or add j
stability to the ever shifting a >ect of affairs.

The state of trade, we reg tto say, continues to
be extremely dull, with Jit e or no prospect of
amendment before the next arvest, and with the
certainty that there will be 0 improvement then
unless tiie crops should be 1 ach more productive
than they have been for the last two years. The
primary cause for the evils i uier which the coun
try is now suffering, is the d< ciency of the harvest
of 1838 and 1839, owing to \ hich a large propor
tion of the income of every i dividual in the coun
try has been withdraw:: om the channels in
which it usually flows, and t ,s evil has been great
ly aggravated by defective egislation as to the
trade in corn, and by defect in the monetary in
st lotions of England, and sfi greater oruvs in those

Tinted States. 'To some « teat, therefore, tha
present distress results from auses which no legis-
lation can effect, but no one who locks nt the mat- 1
ter dispassionately can deny that it has been great
ly aggravated by causes which are within the con- I
trol of legislative wisdom.

The sales of cotton yesterday, were 3500 bales 1
to Tie trade, except 150 bales for export, and a!- ;
though the import in two days, was nearly 40,000
bales, yet the market was steady, and closed with I
2 uim»iess not anticipated by spinners.”
The sales are, in Ivro days, 6000 tales. The
inaiket closed yesteiday more regular in price, and
a though the impoit was very large, say nearly
40,000 hales, in two days, yet there was a steadi
ness and brmness shewn, which Spinners seemed
not to anticipate, and although no advance, 3.500
b.des changed hands at full rates.
“In Manchester there was more doing at former
rates.”
