The Convent of lona. The writer of an article on t:f:s renowned es tablishment, in a late number vuf the American Quarterly Register, remarks that: it if an interest ing fact in the history of the chych, that during the greater part of the sixth ceijOry, while in En gland the lights of lea.nmg and -e igiun were sul lering an a mosl total eclipse, in rdand they slionc forth with distinguished splcndc 1 lie c ' er o. v of Ireland were among the most le mod anl efficient in the woild. She was an asytu i for the persecu ted of other lands, and her c ir< lies prospered greatly- Ireland, at that period was proverbially denominated insula sanctorum, ( i islanu of saints. Missionaries, moreover, went fi»u n Horn that coun try in all directions, and to tlii : spirit is owing, among other things, the great .stitution at lona, concerning wh ch Cr. Johnson, ho saw the spot in 1773, wrote the celeoratedse.j ence: “Far from me and from my friends be such frigid philosophy as may conduct us, indifferent a d unmoved, over any ground whi. ii ha- been dig; tied by wisdom, bravery, or virtue. That man i'* little to be en vied, whose patriotism would n gain force the plain of Marathon, or wbc 3 piety would not grow warmer among the ruins v [' lona.” At this date the ruins were i r}‘ distinct. The churches of the two convents v re both standing, though unroofed. The chapel r the nunnery was in use for a coiv house I A iar e graveyard sur rounds the buildings ; and here sings and princes and priests lie in promiscuous c nfusion. The re putation of the place :or sanct y was such that applicants for burial on its pit aises were made even by .Norwegian and Irish,2; well as the Scotch kings, and the chieftains of he Isles. Several monarchs are said to have abdit ted their thrones, ami retired, in the evening of : e, to the cloisters of lona, that they might here re pa re for death, and secure for themselves a pla cos burial. It is re ! atcd by the older historian ), that forty-eight kings us Scotland, four ol Ire’, id, eight of Nor way, and one of France, lie int re lon this island. The foupder of lona, was Ft uinba, born in Ire land, A. L). 521. After labonnl with signal suc cess, for a time, in his own cou try, he set sail for the shores of Scotland. His ttention was first directed to the Fi ls, many of \ horn were convert ed. To reward him for those i tedious, the king of the Piets put him in posses on of the litt'e isl and of lona, lying on the outei shore of M 11, one of the principal of the liehrii *s. Columba now returned to Ireland, and havi ;1 [secured twelve as sistants. came back and established himself on lona. The first object was prepare huts, and erect a little church. Rut as ftlieir fame spread, and numbers resorted to them (It instruction, tliese original structures gave place lo olners of a more permanent character; and in a few years lona was covered with cloisters and c lurches, and became the residence of a numerous ai|l learned body of ecclesiastics. r The establishment is cornmlnly spoken of as a convent, but was more properl i a college, or rather a theological and missionary chool. Its alumni went out from time to time in all directions, and exerted a mighty influence. J ley scattered them selves all over Scot and, the North of England, Ireland, Wales, and even the .elgic Provinces of Germany. New institut ons, f couise, were cre ated Indeed, i. is said by sot e writers, that not less than a hundred different convents, founded substantially after the model • that at lona, and growing up under its influence rose into being du ring the next 400 years. Th members of these establishments, and the missi nar.es from them, were denominated Culdccs. ; ill) the growth of some of these rather declin ed. Then it suffered by an illusion of Danish pi rates. A Norwegian party ntaged the Island af terwards. Still it subsisted, fj late as the thir teenth or fourteenth century, [hen this, together with all the Culdee establishn Hits, were subjected to the Romish bishops, by t |e authority of the kings of Scotland. Subsoquei ily, it seems to have been a eat of one of the pisl ps of the isles. It is remarkabl ,as the wri er in the Register observes, that so little should e known or said of | lona in modern times, after v,l its renown. The i locality, even, is a terra incog :ita to most persons, j We have stated that the isiarjl lb*s on the outer ! shore of Mull. The chaniuf between the two I islands is about half a mi e ii|width, and of diffi cult navigation, owing to the exi-tonCe of sunken rocks. lona is two miles and ,a half in length, and a little more than a mile in oreadth, containing 3,000 Scotch acres. The suit co is uneven, rising into hills, the most elevated < which is about 400 feel above the level of the se r The soil is easy of culture. Dr. Johnson descri -d it as remarkably fruitful. In his time there w: re some hundred in habitants, of whom he says,; '.n no very flattering terms certainly.—they are oJcedingly gross, and almost entirely neglected. ifunow not if they arc visited by any minister.
