■ of the Steamer Nortk*Carolm. [ r fhr Wilmington Recorder, of the 28lh inst. ■ , 9 vs, “A partial examination of the causes which I produced the disastrous occurrence, was gone in- Bfpliy lhe Directors of the Company on Monday. ■ fbe following facts were elicited:— f ' That the Captains of both boats were asleep, it being on their watch below, and each boat in charge of the chief mate. That the mates were at their proper stations in t hc wheel-house, the wheel in immediate charge „f the wheelsmen. That the boats’ signal lanterns were visible to each other, at a distance of several miles. That the Dudley kept her proper course, inten ding to pass the North-Carolina landward. That the North-Carolina after she discovered the Dudley, instead of pursuing her own straight course, which would have carried the boats past each other, with an intervening distance of at least two hundred yards, kept altering her cou-se a point or two every now and then, until it lay directly across that of the Dudley’s, and inevita bly in contact, with the rate of speed they were both going. As soon as lire danger was apparent to both, they shut oft'their steam, whereas had the North-Carolina not done so, she would have shot past uninjured. The whole conclusion is, that the accident is to he attributed to the ignorance or strange fatu ity of the mate of the North Carolina, in changing her course. The mate’s name is Mc- Qcakes. Obliging osr’s self and ose’s Nkigh —A subscriber to the Philadelphia Ledger w ho was daily annoyed by requests for the loan of his paper, which his kindness prevented him from refusing, subscribed for a copy of it for his neighbor borrower, since which he has the uninter rupted reading of his own paper, which he enjoys with the delicous feeling of a man who has the exclusive use of his own breakfast. He thinks this additional amount of satisfaction will com pensate him for the expense of paying foi his neighbor’s paper the year round. Good sews for the South.—A Yankee has patented a machine which he calls the Sleep Kasy, or Musketo Depopulator. These Yankees beat all ‘nalur’ for invention. Flying.—Galignani’s Messenger relates that a Bavarian mechanic, named Interholzer, has in vented an apparatus for flying, and has proposed to the Minister of the Interior, to make a public exhibition of his system in the Champs Elysecs, m the King’s fete of the Ist of May. He pre tends (hat he can, with his appa atus, raise him self to any height he pleases, take any direction n the air, and lower himself, with more or less rap dity, at will. Whether Mr. Interholzer will succeed in his attempt, remains to be proved. CVe have no doubt, however, that the thing is possible—and that before another half century has passed away, men and women, girls and boys, will make no thing of a flight of liftecn or twenty miles before breakfast, for exercise or amusement. —Boston Journal . Powers of the Arab Horsf..—l am tempt ed to mention to you the feat of an Arab horse, the properly of a person who has more than once been mentioned by me in these letters, Aga Bra ham, and which has not, so far as I know, been ever doubted. The animal came from Shirauz to Tehran, 520 miies, in six days; remaining [there three days, went back in five; remained at Shirauz nine, and returned again to Tehran in seven days. This same gentleman told me that he had once rode another horse of his own from Tehran to Room, twenty-four fur-sacks, or about eighty-four miles, between the dawn of a morn ing near the vernal equinox, and two hours be fore sunset —that is, in about ten hou; s. i his, ‘loo, is good going; but Aga Braham had always the best horses in Persia.— Fraser's Tartary Jour. “Is not Mr. Calhoun a man of truth!”— Globe. Cleared in ;he same time, for Trieste 1214 bales, Havana 159, New York 142, Boston 958, together 2473 bales ; making a reduction in stock of 2221 bales, and leaving on hand, inclusive of all on ship-board not cleajed on (he 24th inst., a stock of 37,917 bales. Since our review of Wednesday morning last, in which we reported operations in C otton to a fair extent lor this late period of the season, the mar ket has remained very quiet, and transactions have been on a limited scale, the daily sales having only averaged about 350 bales. Buyers, even when disposed to operate, have been prevented from do ing so not only on account of the fuli prices which holders continue to insist upon, but also in conse quence of the very limited stock on sale, and the fact of its being principally composed of the infe rior descriptions, which are in but little request, the demand, as heretofore, being chiefly restricted to qualities above middling fair. Another cause, perhaps, for the present inactivity in the market | is, that we are just on the eve of receiving advices from Europe many days later, and most persons i seem inclined to await their arrival before enter ing into further engagements. Our previous quo t ations, it wni be observed, are cont.nued, and we have again to remark that holders are very linn. The sales during the week amount to 4100 bales, and for the last three days to about 1100. LIVERPOOL CLASSIFICATIONS. Speculators have taken some few parcels, and limited sales have been made to the city trade and for the upper couniry, but we could learn of no purchases for the Northern mar kets. Our quotations remain as heretofore—say 40 54 cents; but we remark that none can be bought at the lowest price, except very inferior, and tnat some small lots of choice have been scld considerably above our highest figures, ihe stock on the Levee is rather large, but it is almost en tirely in second hands, who hold firmly, and anti cipate an advance. Wc have heard no sales on plantation. Four. —The market remains about the same as at the date of our last report, there being onlj a limited demand, though some few parcels havc rr n taken for shipment, in addition to the usual sales for consumption.
