\ few (fays after this visit from M. Felix, the
bubble burst. No one knew what to make of the
whole story. The very existence of Jacques Her
■u became doubted; the o'd seaman who had
teen him embark at Marseilles declared it was
somebody else! Some people thought me crazy.—
M Bonnet said, “A splendid hoax! it cost me fif

Benret.(Wiiom I had made my steward,) paid a!!
their accounts, and then gave them a splendid en

people remained undecilcd whether I really ob
tamed the Martinique wealth, or merely turned
the chapter of accidents to account. The only
man in Lyons who does know, is Louis Boyer, to
whom I lent a few thousand francs, with which he
has joined a commercial firm, and will, probably,
make a fortune —not quite as rapidly as I did.

memory of Jacques Hervieu!
“It is a strange story,” said I, “and it is a pity
that, to give an air of romance to a narrative which
h literally crowded with francs, bankers’ accounts,
investments and speculations, it docs not wind up
—as all true tales do —with love and marriage.”
“Precisely so,” said Hervieu; “and therefore, let
it not surprise you if, in a fortnight from this very
day, you receive an invitation to attend a ceremony
which, while it will change the beautiful Louise
into Madame Hervieu, will still leave her Felix—
in every thing but name!”

The deceased was a man of firmness and integ

ciate His solid worth, and award to him the posses
sion of those virtues of the heart and qualities of
tne head, which enable him to discharge so faith
fully as he did, the duties of husband, parent,
master, friend, and patriot; and which thus ren
dered him useful, honored, and beloved, in all the
relations of life.
Though his illness was sudden, it must he a

approaches of death with extraordinary calmm ss,
and that he refle< ted upon his departure as one,
who, having jcch brought to feel ins need of mer- i

PROSPECTUS
OF THE
PLANTERS’ GAZETTE.
Edited hy D. G. Cotting, Washington, Georgia.
IN offering a new Journal to the public for pa
tronage, it is customary and proper to set forth
in a prospectus, the principles which its conduc
tors intend to support, and to give such pledges as
to its management that its patrons may' not at any
future time find themselves deceived or disappoint
ed in its course.
And first, as to our political creed. Believing
that there is at present i crisis in our national af
fairs, v'hich requires the hearty and unremitting
exertions of every true lover of his country to
preserve it from the destruction that menaces it
that a powerful and fatal influence is now exerted
upon our institutions by ambitious and unprinci
pled po iticians; that the Constitution, that safe
guaidof our libeitics, is in danger from their ma
chinations, and that the State Rights doctrines and
the piineiplcs of the revolutionary patriots only,
can preserve it inviolate, we shall give our unde
viating support to those doctrines. Our motto
shall be “Principles and Men;” therefore, of the*
prominent candidates for the Presidency, now be- 1
fore the people, we choose those for our support
who we believe will carry out State Right-' mea
sures, viz: General WILLIAM HENRY HAR
HISON and JOHN TYLER, gentlemen whom even i
their enemies allow to be true patriots and honest
men.
As the title of our journal indicates, we shall
devote much of its columns to the interests of
Agriculture. We shall endeavor to give to the
Planter the latest and best information of the im
provements, now a’most daily taking place in his
business. We are aware that in the strife of party,
agriculture, the foundation on which society rests,
has been too much neglected by the press, and that
some “Reform” is needed in this respect.
All the aid in our power shall be given to the
cause of literature, and we shall endeavor to ren
der the Gazette as interesting as possible to every 1
class of readers.
