We the undersigned, practitioners of medicine

lis Sanative too valuable not to be genera Ily

tear, we must believe.
We hereby sta e, that when Dr. Louis Offon
roelk-k first came before the German public, as j
he pretended discoverer of a new doctrine and a .

WC now deem it our boundon duty (even at the
Ixpense of self-interest) publicly to acknowledge
t< efficacy in curing not 011I3' consumption, but

TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF
FA Ml LIES.
DR. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
♦toes not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that may
wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx
iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme
North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting U
r be made from the stalk, a tiling not more aosuiu
’ than for one to offer meal from the corn stalk, to
I say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
1 which, he holds himself bound, and in honor piedg
. ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
' profess to be, and will do for othcis what they
r have done for such as mav have u,‘cd them ; as
his is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
. know that the Y ellow’ arc just doubly as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of the hapatinc, 01 active principle, and when used
as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
system in much better condition than the other
kind ; many will recollect with what trembling
’ anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
how they then wished for a substitute, it has
long been known that the Tomato contained ca
’ thartic principles, but not until of late was I*.
ascertained that ..icy contained alterative and diu
i rcuc properties. The Faculty embrace and use
the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is 4Vcre it a patent mystery,
they would be bound to reject tlie medicine,as they
justly do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
’ day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa-c anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Bill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in

Radical Cure ol Hernia or Rupture, by Dr.
Chase’s Improved Surgeons’ Trusses.
fIIHE subscriber has opened an office, at the Drug
I store of Messrs. J. J. Robertson & Co,, for the
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
usllv celebrated instruments. He has now used
1 them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy foibid,
he could name several persons who have been radi
-1 cully cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous
■ affection, bv the use of these Trusses, besides many
I others who are in a fairway of being entirely re
-1 lieved. The following is the language of the com
mittee ol the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia.
“ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected
, the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
» are usually ventured upon by those who wearothec
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
r other apparatus known to the committee.”
- “ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terms, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of i
the profession, as the best known means of me- j
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the 1
highest chances of radical cure.”
The fol.owing is from the Southern Medical and 1
Southern Journal, published in our own city.
*( All must admit of the radical cure of hernia, i
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to effect the object.”
Persons from a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjus
it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under
this afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certificate, from someresponai"
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of ali sizes, and applicable
1 to every variety of reduciblerupture.

The branch of the Academy at Summerville is

the location of this branch of the Academy in one

HERMITAGE EXTRACT.—This lately in
vented combination of delightful odors, has
| acquired a just popularity, not only by reason ol
i the strength and delicacy, but of the extraordina
ry duration ol its perfume. 4Vhilst the strength of
many other extracts and essences is almost as eva
nescent as the bloom of the flowers from which
they arc derived, the Hermitage retains its fra
grance for an indefinite length of time, and is
scarce to be removed from the garment on which it
is peured, by washing; hence it is probably the
cheapest and most delightful perfume of our labora
tories.

MOFFAT S VEGETABLE LIFE MEDICINES
f iIHESE medicines are indebted for lheir name
I to th< ir manifest and sensible action in puri
fy ing the spring and channels ot life, and enduing
them with renewed tori'' and xigor. In many hun

were previously unacquainted with the beautifully
philosophical principles upon which they are
compoun led, and upon w hich they consequently
act.
The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves j
in diseases of every form and description. Their
first operation is to loosen from the coats el the
stomach and bowels, the various impurities and
crudities eon tanlly settling around them ; ami to
remove the hardened feces w hich collect
convohisions of the smallest intestines. Oilier
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind as to produce habitu
al cost ivenrss with ill its train of evils, or in a sud
den d Btrliova, wit h its eminent lungers. Tins tart
is well known to ail regular anatomists, who ex
amine the human bowels after death ; and hence
the prejudice of those well informed men against
quack mei innes—cr medicines prepared and hcr
laded to the public bv ignorant p< rsons. ’1 he se
cond eff*cl of the Life Medicines is to cleanse t ha
kidneys and the bladder, and by this means, the
liver and ihe lungs, the healthful action of which
entirely depends upon the regularity of the urinary
organs. The blood, which takes its red color Irom
the agency ot the liver and the lungs before it
passes into the liea r, being thus purified by them
and nourished by food coining from a clean stom
ach, courses freely th ough the veins, renews every
part of the system, ami triumphantly mounts the
banner of health in the blooming check.

which afllict the human frame. In fever and

mostem nenlly successful ; so much so that in the
Fever and Ague districts, Physicians almost fini
versally prescribe them.
All ilial Air. Moffat requires of his patient is
to be particular in taking the Life Medicim s strictly
according to the directions. It is not.by a news

in their luvo , that he hopes to gain credit. It is l

incomparable and invaluable remedy so j
JL long known, and used with such unparralleled j
success in the Canadas for the last 30 yeair, ap- .
pears to need no panegyric. Its operation upon the
human system is such that it invariably acts like j
a charm, for the relief and radical cure of a certain
common and disagreeable "ills the flesh is heir to.”
This prize obtains its own name from the certain
success hich has attended it through all of its
trying c cumstances, namely, “live days,”—the
same su .-css which followed it in a Northern lati
tude still obtains in a more Southern. The formula
or recipe was obtained at great expense, intrigue
and hazard by M. Cheveres, from the celebrated
Indian Chief Wabenothe, or Great Moon, whilst
he, with others was pursuing the lucrative Fur bu
siness in the North-west with the Indians. —
Wabenoshc prized highly and use it with invariable
success throughout his two tribes. Its known and
valued virtues have already enriched to an ahnost
incredible extentthe children of this warlike prince,
not only by actual sale of the article itself to in
dividuals, but by parting with copies of liis receipt j
at enormous prices to the Chief of every tribe of
Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the
Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com
position until he sleeps with his fathers,” although
free to use it in their respective tribes, which
places it in tiie hands of every Indian who rely
wills, I may say, religious confidence on its cura
ble powers.
Below is a copy of the translation as near as it can
be anglisizedof the deed gt>on by Wabenoshc, to
M. Chevcret. when he purchased the original recipe,
and had twice assisted the Chief himself through
the tedious manipulatory process of'manufacture. ;
Few white men would credit the length of lime
which is consumed in preparing the article for im
mediate use.
