•‘Master Humphrey’s Clock,” by Boz, grows j
mo:e rich in interest as it advances. As Uie at
tenuated hands move upon the antiquated dial of j
the old clock, “the minutes wing their way with :
pleasure.” Never did clock so sweetly tell the
;our s. The illustrations accompanying the Nos.
re excellent. Boz is fortunate in living in an age
n which the art of engraving lias reached such
perfection, and still move fortunate in having lor j
sis con temporal ics CrutKshank and G attei mole and
Brown; their inimitable illustrations add much
force at a effect to the graphic and peculiar deline- i
jtions of Boz. In part o, we have an illustration ;
fa scene between Miss Benton, Air. Weller, the |
eider, and little Toney, Samivel’s son, whom Wel
ler, senior, pronounced the “ olessedost boy that
ever wos.” The illustrator has done his part
faithful y. Here is the scene: Compiler.
“Good cv’uin, mum,” said the older Mr Weller,
looking in at the door, alter a prelatory tap, rni j
afeerd we’ve come in rayther arter tiletime, mum, 1
But the voting colt being full o wicc lias been a .
boltin’ and shy in* and' gettin’ his leg over the
trace* to si h a extent ihat it lie an t werj soon
broke in he’ll wex me into a broken heart, and ,
then he’ll never be brought out no more, except |
to learn his Jet ers from the writ In’ on his grand
fathers tombstone.”
With these pathetic words, which were address
ed to s mething outside the door, about twoloet
..x from the ground, .Mr. Y\ oiler introduced a very
small boy, firmly set upon a couple of sturdy legs,
who looked as if nothing could ever knock him
.own.® Besides having a very round face, strongly
‘ M’-"tling Air. Welter s, and a stout little ot
xaetly his build, this young gentleman, standing
w in bis legs very wide apart, as il the top boots
were familiar to them, actually winked upon the
tisekceper with his infant eye, in imitation oi lus
granrtallier.
"There's a naughty boy, mum, ’ said Air. YY ti
ler, bursting with delight, “ Here's a iniraonal
Tony. Wos there ever a lililc chap o tour yeai
and eight montiis old as vinked his eye at a strange
hdy, afore r”
As lutlc affee'ed by this observation as by the
‘ormer appeal to his feelings, Master YY eller cle
”ated in the air a small model of a coach-whip,
which he carried in his hand, and addressing the
ousekeeper with a shrill ** ya —hip. inquired it
•he wasAtoing “down the road at which happy
adaptation of a lesson he had been taught from m
■y. Mr. Weller could restrain his feelings no
anger, hut gave him twopence on the spot.
“It's in vain to deny it, mum,” said Mr. Wel
ler, “ this here is a boy*alter hi* grandfather’s own
■cart, and beats out all the bo\ s as ever wos oi
'ill le. Tnoiigh, at tlic same time, mum,” added
MPWeller, trying to look giavclv down upon his
favorite, “it was very wrong on him to want to

very cruel on him to force poor gr uidfalhe. to lilt

vould’nt pass vun single blessed post, mum, and at
' e top o' the lane, there's sevcu-aml-b. rty on ’em

Here Air. Weller, whose feelings were in a per
gtual conflict between pride in his grandson's a
ieveou nts, and a sense of hi* own responsibility,
ad the importance of impressing him with moral
dhs, burst into a fit of laughter, and, suddenly
recking himself, remarked in a severe tone, that
httle boys as made their grandfathers put ’em over
iosts never went to Heaven at any price.
By this time the housekeeper had made tea, and
