Messrs Editors :—lt has been a fact which seems unaccountable, that while the people ot the South have among them literary and scientific Institutions, which would not suffer by a compari son with other Institutions ot a similar character the world over —we yet seem disposed to neglect them, and to follow a fashion which can find justification only in precedent, in patronizing Institutions abroad. This appears to me the more remarkable and unjustifiable on the part ot young , gentlemen pursuing the study ot medicine, for it would be apparent, to every one that none are more capable anil better qualified to impart know ledge and instruction in relation to disease than those who have formed correct noli ms ol the char acter of disease at the bedside. Ihe diseases oi the south are peculiar to our climate, dillering in frhadc, type and variety from those ol every other climate and I think I am safe in laying down the proposition that no one can so sucec slully in struct, as he who from his intimate acquaintance j and close observation, ihe Theory ot medicine may be learned snv where, with all our lights and all our aids, we frequently tall very tar short of even an ordinary degree c I proficiency in the practice; we should then learn t > !rcat disra.c j when it is to be studied on the Theatre of our practice. I have been induced to make these suggestion, from having road in the papers, a j notice of the annual commencement of the lec tures of the medical college ot Georgia. I cing able to speak from personal observation, I Like great pleasure in bearing testimony to the ah.li y and amiable deportment ot the professors ot that Institution, one and all. And 1 teei assured in making the assertion that :he instances will be few, where a student attends Ins tirst course ol lectures in that Institution, that he could be in duccd to lake his diploma any who o else.—As Georgians we have reasons to feel proud of that Institution, and as Georgians we should have i pride enough to sustain it. lam happy to learn that it is now in a more ilatleiing and prosperous condidition than ever. The i..culty have deter- , mined to devote their whole energies to the huil- ; ding up a medical School, that will vie with, it not outstrip any Institution ot a similar character in the country. They have an agent in Faria, now purchasing Instruments of superior quality, Wnich w ill enable them to furnish every one ot the class who may wish—and the student can have every advantage there that can be found elsewhere—and more, he will there learn not only ihe Theory, but the character and bed side treat ment of diseases that will every day meet him in the field of practice. I urnbuli’s mode of restoring or develop ing the senses of hearing and sight, is undoubt edly the most wonderful discoveiy of the age. On more than one occasion we have laid before the public accounts of the miraculous cures which we have actually witnessed the pcrfuimance, arid which, we hesitate not to confess, had we not seen we could scarcely have believed. However, as too much publicity cannot be given to a discove ry calculated to confer upon many human beings blessings scarcely interior to existence itself, bless ings without which life lacks its chief value, a discovery by which ihoseex lu led by the absence ol sight or hearing from the most desirable inti macy and communion with the external world are admitted to enjoyments previously unknown to them, to receive the light of Heaven with all delighting revelations, and hold converse with their kind as too much publicity cannot be gi ven to such a discovery as this, we unhesitatingly lay before the public the wouderons facts which wc witnessed on l ist Wednesday. Twopatierts, recommended to Dr. Turnbull’s care by the Rev. Dr. McKinley, ot Kilmarnock—one named Mar garet Shields, aged nine years, whose [rarenls thought she had lost tier hearing when an infant by fever—the other named Mary Wilson, aged thirteen years, ot Templeton Burn, Kilmarnock. whose parents say she was born deaf and dumb were introduced into the room where we atten ded to witness Dr. Turnbull's operations. Into the ears ot each of the e children the ope rator pouied a few drops of white liquid, and ad ded a small bit of lint to prevent its escape.— 1 hey were then allowed to sit quic’ly for an hour and a halt, when (he Doctor slowly and silently approached first the one and then the other, with his watch in his ham! ; and in both cases, no soon er did he come within two or three yards of the patient, than the eye indicated a feeling ol sur prise, and a moment after, as the ticking of the watch became more distinctly heard, she uttered an exclamation ot delight and assumed an atti tude ot most anxious attention, apparently desi ring thoroughly to enjoy the new sensation.— btoiue simple sounds were next uttered by the j Doctor’s assistant, and were immediately repea ted by the child upon whom the experiment was ti ;ed. V\ ords were next spoken in a similar man ner, and similar result, and even whole sentences j alter being pronounced by the patient, who, only j half an hour before, was both deaf and dumb.— The child, of course, evinced no consciousness of the words, but seemed to utter them from the dc- j light of exercising a new faculty. As language would altogether fail to convey an adequate idea of the emotions we experienced, we state the simple fact, which indeed needs not any extraneous embel lishments to heighten its interest.
