Thai evening saw Charles Gerry ami Martha

A month saw hands united where hearts had
long been one. They both had released. their

In ray way on a journey this spring, I culled at
Major Wyman’s, and found that Cnarles Gerry
had left his rich parish in the city, and had settled
over the church at Aylwin. living with his beau
tiful bride in the same house with the old Major.
The la ter has now f und it be»t to use the

other. but he prefers to go to church with his
grandchild, and thinks no one can preach, so good !

As to politics he remains as he always, a firm, !
staunch Republican, and will vote for Harrison
next fall, whom he declares lobe a man after

Cov.wviptiox.—Dr. Litem r, of Paris, has
published the fallowing rules for preventing the
advent of consumption in th sc who arc predis
posed to it: A consumptive patient should in
habit a drv land, airy locality, well exposed to the
solar rays. Kes.deuce in any large city, ’predis
poses to consumption. A temperate climate j
should oe chosen, where the va. i.cions of ti e tem
perature are miti'.ef sudden not fcqucnt. Tra
vei 1 in=_r, and particularly sea voyages, aic atten
ded with decided advantage in the early stage of
consumption. The patient should be warmly
clothed, and covered with flannel from head to j
foot. He should take habitually some exercise, i
as walking, riding. exposure to the open air j
and sun’s rays are absolutely necessary. He
should exercise the mind in a moderate ■ degree,
but avoid all strong moral emotions. He must {
renounce any profession which requires strong j
muscular exertion, a bent position of the body,]
residence in a damn moist place,%:c. anq finally, *
ire food should be rich and nourishing.
Gout. — A writer in the Norfolk Herald, who
has suffered much from this painful disease, rec- !
orumenus, from his own experience and that of I
many others, a source of great relief in the follow- j
tug receipt:
Take ft or Jock leaves, pour boiling water on
them, and apply them to the part affected as hot
as they can be borne; put five or six covers of
the leaves over the part affected and bind it up—
to be repeated two or three tima day. Two or
three times w/II entirely remove the pain, and i
soreness. While under treatment wear a cloth!
shoe or stock. The leaves, gathered at this >eas- j
son rnd dried in the sun answer quite as well in |
winter, prepared ilie in same way.

Colton I here has been, during the week.some
want of animation which nefbre distinguished tne
market, and as a consequence of this, some reduc
tion in pri e, particularly in the middling and infe
rior qualities. The alteration however, is not
more than 3d, a id at this decline, there arc few v
sellers of importance, and none of these apparently
anxious. The state of the weather is generally
alleged to be the cause of change in the market, but
tire very large buying, for some time past, is suffi
cient ot itself to account for diminished demand,
and with this a slight decline in price was sure to
occur. Ihe sta e of trade is good, and though
perhaps rather less so than it was a short time
a e°) y p l * l promises very' favorably for the future,
and confidence remains undimtnished. In Brazils
and Egyptians, there lias been no variation from
our last circular.
I be sales of the week amounted to 22,350 bales,
including 2,200 American ou speculation, and 250
lor export. The import was 28,379 hales. The
American short staple were quoted as follows, viz:
ordinary, 5 a s|; middling, 5J a sj; fair, 6 a 6j;
