Prospectus of a AVi c Work to be er.titled GEORGIA ILLUSTRATES), IN a series of original pictures, on stee l with Id ler press descriptions, ihe plan of ;|itlishing in successive numbers pictorial works, i -istrative of the scenery of countries, has long bee a popu lar one in Europe, and is rapidly gamin,; favor in ■our own country. The proposition to issue such a work, devoted to the scenery of Georgia, although novel will hud universal favor, and be regarded as it is by the Edit or, a plan at once felicitous and feasible. There is much scenery in our State, that is not surpassed in beauty and sublimity, by that of any otper Mate in the Union. The upper counties ab und ii scenes, which need only be known to command T *e admi ration ot all who love the beauties of ilff-iie.— Much of the scenery of the North is inferior to our own, but is yet vi-ited by thousands simpij?oecause it has been written sung ant “ by au thors and tiavelleis until its beauty hasSbefome universally known and appreciated. It is irsinliie that attention shouio be directed to our owi|resour ces u s p ir. natural scenery, an* when this is siune, our own and Northern tourists will -speedily render our beautiful views a- imnErtai as our language. I The South is charged with general indii’erence to the progress of Literature and Fine Ails ; ai d probably the strongest foundation lor the c2arg is found in ner inaction in enterprise calculates to fos ter these objects. The publication of tne l impos ed work wilt it is believed, be an elTecth blow at the foundation, a step towards theestahl hment of our literary reputation, to which end mu h hon orable effort is now directed. A third consideration and the last whir ti will now be urged, is me intiinsic value of sued pu. li cati >n as •• Georgia Illustrated.” it wiljjerabo dy the representations of the beautiful and sublime in our State scenery, and afford to ali, at a trifling expense, exact pictures of our mountains, fillies, cataracts, public buildings, kc., which they | ay or may not Otherwise behold, but which, in eith y case, would afford peculiar pleasuie. $ The proposed work will be executed in ;?? style supciior to any s-miiar pictorial woik in thilcoun try, The plates will be executed on steel |- r em inent engravers, from original drawing, ma|e ex press! y for the purpose, by Mr. T. Addi on iilich ards, of Augusta. The engiavings will be slcum companied with letter press descriptions, pr*iared for the work, and in this department the |dilor will secure, as far as possible, the assistant* and co-operation ol our best writers. In short, ncjiains win be spared to make thd work a perfe t }.2m of the kind, to the end that it may meet a wefeme reception not on.y at home but also abroad.
