An Ancient Ditty.
BY E7HRAIM.
One. I knew a charming fellow,
Long time ago;
Who every night jot sweetly mellow.
Long time ago,
A jug of rum he fondly cherished,
Blow high or low •,
Hut, alas the poor man perished,
Long time ago.)
One night he started, drunk and merry,
On home to go ;
Next day they found him, sunken very
Deep in the snow.
A happy man, and very frWcy,
When just so so \
lie lived and died on rum and whiskey
Long time ago.
The “ Loafers’ Club” at once thought proper
Respect to show;
And woie crape, for the defunct toper,
Long time ago,

Cotton —The market has been extremely dull
to-day, the sales not reaching to more than 3 or
400 bales. The large holders continue firm at for
mer prices, but it is ooserved that the few sales
made to-day were generally at a slight decline,
some say i cent on some descriptions.— Chronicle.
April 28.
Cotton —Arrived since the 21st inst. 8U73 bales,
and exported in the same period 28122 bales, as
follows: —to Liverpool 13487 bales, to Greenock
1962, to Havre 0060, to Marseilles, 631, to Nantz
1 123, to Antwerp 800, to New York 1007, to New
Orleans 62—leaving a stock on hand and on ship
board not cleared ol 73416 bales, against 188186
game time last year.
The Cotton market at the close of our last re
view, was firm as regarded prices, but purchasers
did not feel disposed to operate freely. On Wed
nesday, however, they manifested better feeling,
when 2000 to 2500 bales changed hands at the full
rates of the previous day. On Thursday and Fri
day buyers again cased off, the sales of the two
days m»t exceeding 1500 bales, which were elfcct
ed at former current rates. Since Saturday, inclu
sive, up to yesleiday evening, Hie sales are esti
mated at 2500 to 3000 bales. On these latter
transactions, in a few instances, slight concessions
on the part of holders have been made, but gener
ally former rates governed. The indifference of
buyers for the greater part of the week, has made
holders more anxious to sell, and measureably pre
pared them, wc believe, to submit to easier teims.
Our quotations, it will be perceived, arc hut slight
ly varied from those of last week. Wo sum up
the week’s business at about 70U0 bales. Among
the: sales a crop lot of 60 to 70 bales at cents.

Freights —The transactions in this department
have been inconsiderable since this day week. One
full engagement for Havre at let 1j for Colton,
and lots for filling up at 7-16 d in Ameiican, and
3-8 d in British vessels, are the extent of foreign
operations. Coastwise, the current rate is $1 {>
bale for New York and SI;J- for Boston and Provi
dence, at which prices some of the best vessels in
the trade are taking small parcels. A reference to
our shipping list will show but a few vessels with
out engagements, still it is thought the tonrrgc
now in port is ample for the remainder of our crop.
Exchange —At the close of our inquires last
week, rates had an upward tendency, and on the
succeeding day were piaced about A 4? cent higher,
and continued gradually advancing until yesterday
morning, up to which lime drawers had gained 1 |
0 1$ per ct. on descriptions most in demand. This
Hare-up was the result of the banks stopping
checking on Wednesday, when private drawers
were enabled 10 control the market. A good de
mand existed for most kinds, which was met with
only a moderate supply. Yesterday morning the
Branch Bank commenced checking at sight on New
York at 8 cent, which brought down rates to
about our last quotations. —Journal of Commerce.
Apalachicola. April 24.
Our Cotton Market has felt no depression in con
sequence of the foreign news per the Acadia. On
the contrary, prices are fully maintained. Since
our last the sales have been light, among which
* are the following: 201 bales at Ilf ;30 a 104 5 24
a 10J ; 27 all ; 8 a 10<J ; 18 a loj, The receipts
for the week past amount to 3265 bales. Accounts
per Acadia of the Liverpool Cotton Market look
gloomy for large opcraters. '1 here had been a de
cline of a farthing on the 19th of March, and the
article was dull, and evinced a downward tendency.
It is said that the European news has not disclosed
symptoms so unfavorable to cotton, and indeed
trade in general, since the memorable year 1829. —
