this Company will receive at the Georgia Railroad ;
Depot at Augusta, all Cotton, Produce or Merchandize i
brought down by the Georgia and other Railroads, and in
tended for the South Carolina Railroad ; the Freight and :
charges on which they will pay up to that point, and col- :
lect the whole, Freight and charges, aa agreed above on i
delivery in Charleston.
Duplicate receipts will be given by (he Agent of the j
Company on the receipt of such Cotton, Produce or Mer- i
•hsndize at the Georgia Railroad Depot, one of which will
be given to the Georgia Railroad Company, and the other i
will be forwarded to the consignee in Charleston, and for
all loss and damage that may occur to such Cotton, Pro- |
dues or Merchandize after it came iuto their possession, j
the South Carolina Railroad Company will be responsible, j
(and will promptly pay ) but no further.
Shippers of Cotton, Produce or Merchandize for Charles- j
ton from points on the other Roads above, will send Dupli

on ier passage up, and the Panama on the same
day on her pa-sage down.
Mining prospects in the water-diggings of Cali
fornia never were so favorable.
The announcement oi \\ ebstcr’s death was re
ceived at San Francisco ou the 2oth of November,
mid cast a deep gloom over the community. Mi
nute guns were fired, flags displayed at half-mast,

On the evening of December 4th, a terrible earth
quake occurred at Acapulco, destroying a number
ol the hugest buildings. Continued shocks were
t- ;t up to the timo or tne steamer’s departure. The
loss is estimated at $200,000. No lives were lost.
A biurniug mountain was distinctly visible on
tno ith, 60 miles back of Acapulco. * About 80
buildings were ruined, including the Fulton Hotel.
A severe shock was teit on the Bth and repeated
shocks on the 9th.
Tlie Quarter Master’s and Commissary’s stores
at Caron \ tuna, were destroyed by fire on the26th
ot October.

Advices from Kingston are to Dec. 22d. The

Carhsle Bay, front Port Koval, with 38 cases of

on board and 13 on shore among whom were 9
othcers. The fever had also broken out at fit.
Ltu ni, in the garrison. At Ft. Pierre, Martinique,
the F reach Dramatic Company which had recently
arrived, lost 16 of their number by the fever.
Considerable loelirg was manifested in Califor
nia in consequence ol the report that Congress in
tended to break up the Land Commission.

Business for the fortnight was the most active
of the season.-' Freights to the Interior, Oregon
and the South were very active. Flour command
ed extreme rates. Sales to arrive before February
at SBO. Corn Meal *2O. Mess Fork SSO. Butter
40a40c. Lumber wifs declining, the demand
from Sacramento being much less than expected.
A cargo of Oregon assorted sold at $62.50. East
ern Lumber was scarce, and $125 per 1,000 feet
was offered and refused lor a cargo.
F'koxi the Sandwich Islands.—Dates from the
Sandwich Islands are to Nov. 6th. fine hundred
and sixteen whalo ships were at Honolulu on the
4th. The ship Isaac Howland had arrived utTNn
olulu with 4 Japanese saiiors, who were found at
sea in uu open boat in a perishing condition. The
past season has been most successful in the whal
ing business, and more oil would be received at
Honolulu than during any previous season.
Cincinnati, Dec. 2S.—The river is rising three
inches per hour, anti is twelve feet below the great
freshet of 1847 —weather cold. Great damage has
been done to property above and below, and at
Jiadieion a large amount of meat was submerged.
Norfolk, V a., Dec. 28.—The British steamer
Mountaineer,of and from Liverpool for New-York,
was /totally wrecked on Christmas day, 8 miles
South of Currituck Inlet. Her crew were all
saved.
