KICHMON D, May 6.
By an express just arrived from the county
Lieutenant of Monongalia to the Honorable
Executive of this state, we are informed,
that on the 23d ult. two parties of Indians
attacked, nearly at the fame time, two fami
lies ou Dunbar Creek, about 20 or 25 miles
from Morgan’s town, and killed one man
out of one, and the man, his wife, and two
children, which was the whole of the other ‘
family. The alarm given to the inhabitants
(if that part of the country by this murder,
hath become very serious, and, unless fomc
speedy afliftance is given, it is the opinion
that'Monongalia river, which runs through
Morgan’s town, will be the frontier in a fbort

A Proclamation.
WHEREAS by an AX of the
Congrejs of the United States,
bearing date the firft day of
June, in the present year, the
following Oath is'required to be taken by the
Executive and Judicial Officers of this State,
viz. “ I A. B: do' solemnly fwtfar, or affirm,
(as the case may be) .that 1 will support the
Constitution of the United States a?id by
an Order of the Executive of this day, the
Members thereof, together with such State
•Officers, as (hall be refideut and present at
the fe# of Government, are required to take
tire said Oath on Monday the third dav of
August .next; and all other State Officer*, to
gether with the Executive and Judicial Offi
cers of the relpedive counties, are required
to take the said Oath on Saturday the twenty
lecond day of the said month, f HAVE,
THEREFORE, thought fit, by and with the
advice of the Honorable the Executive Coun
cil, to iflue this Proclamation, notifying the
fame to all whom it may Concern; and to
require that all Officers, Executive and Ju
dicial, appointed by and for the body of the
State, not refidcnc or 'prefent at the feat ot
Government, to attend in the counties in
which they may refpeXiveiy reside; together
with all Assistant Justices, Justices of the
Peace, Sheriffs, Clerks, Coroners, Rcgifters
of Probats, Surveyors, Tax-ColleXors, and
Officers of the Militia, at the Court
houses, . or usual places of EleXion, iu
the refpeXive courttife*, on the said twenty
fecond day -of August next, and to tafe and
fubferibe the said Oath, before one or more
of the Assistant Justices therein, who are
hereby autborifed and required to administer
(he fame, firft to one another, and then to
others. And in case of non-attendance, from
sickness or any other cause, on tbaCday, the
fame may be administered on any other day
within the relpeXive counties during the said
month. Arid the laid Assistant Justices are
further required to cause the fubfeription of
the said Oaths to be deposited in the Clerk**
Office of the refpeXive counties, and to

The Trustees took their feat in the Aca
demy at 12 o’cdock, under the defic, and in
front of the ftudentS; and the examina
tion was preceded by a suitable prayer
by tlie Chaplain. His Honor tfie Governor
and the Honorable the Member* of the Ex
ecutive Council, together with a number of
refpeXable gentlemen, attended.
Mr. Griffin, a senior Tutor, examined the
under clafies in spelling, pronunciation, 'and
the firft rudiment* of geography; in which
(hey generally acquitted thcrafclves well.
Mr. Baldwin, the ReXor, proceeded to
rfXimiue other daffies in the principle* of ge
ography and trigonometry» in which were

The Chaplain, Mr. Palmer, then examin
ed the clafles in Latin) where a facility of
learning the language of the once matters of
the world was evident.
The clafles were then called upon the floor,
and delivered a number of lketches iu rheto
ric, with very general applause.
The Truftecs express their fatisfaftion of
the progrefa of the students, and their ap
probation of the conduct of the Tutors; an 4 *
flatter themselves that this Seminary, by a
proper, attentive and uniform proceeding,
will be appreciated to an equality with any
T iu the United States.

Last evening expired about nine o’clock
James Hutchiufon, of Savannah, from a guu
riiot wound he received a few evenings be*
fore st or near the Hotelle. As an inquisi
tion will, doubtiefs, be lud upon the body
to-day, we feel it indelicate to give any an
ticipated accounts of patticulars; but which
fliall appear in our next.
The Com mifii oners of the Savannah way
have been at work during the’ prefeut week,
and have perfefted the brjdge over the Beavec
dam; and will, no doiflt,proceed in thebu

and expelled, that it will have the

and both of which are much out of repair.
It is also observed, that the labor fliould not
