regards the lupprdTion of Wood's
oHilloryof the adminiflration of John
Adams" Has become of no moment, fmce
the book itfelf has been published ; for it
.seems to be unftcrfally agreed that the
book, fofar as any effeft could be produc
ed by it, was calculated to do more inju
ry than benefit to the republican caufe—
bat the bold allegations, which purport
that you combined with the federal party
to defeat the election of Mr. JefFerlon,
occasion some solicitude among those to
whom you are unknown.
Those indeed who have wirneffed your
various and uniform exertions in the cause
of liberty, and the firmnefs and indepen
dence of your conduft on every occasion,
arc not to be shaken in their confidence or
esteem bjy anonymous calumnies; but they
can only express their own opinions, and
repeat the declaration which they are in
formed you have made.—This leaves room
for ourenemies to cavil —ls feme one weie
authorifed from you to make these decla
rations, it would I think, remove the ap
prehenfiens which are entertained by fomc
honeftmen, warm in the cause of freedom,
jealous of their rights, and watchful of
those who Live the honor of being their
servants.
Our intimacy in our youth, and in the
army, is generally known in this state
My address to the people of Burlington
in September 1800, wherein! ftatedyour
services in the field and in the cabinet,
and recommended you for vice-prefidenr,
is not forgotten ; and these circumstances
have occasioned more enquiries or me re
fpefting the calumnies again!! you, than
would otherwise nave been made,
I have no other apology to offer for
this iutrafion than to affine you that it
proceeds from motives founded in patrio
tism, and in that cordial frindfhip, which
hasever fuhfitfed between us.
I avail tnyfelf of this opportunity to
renew the assurances of my refpeft and
esteem; and that I am,
Mod truly your friend,
JOSEPH BLOOMFIELD.
The honorable Aaron Barr, Flee.
P rest dent of the U. S,
Ihe vice-president's Anf<wcr,
New-York, September 21, 1802.
Dear Sir,
You are at liberty to declare from me,
that all those charges and insinuations,
which aver or intimate that 1 advised or
countenanced the opposition tnade to Mr.
Jefferfon, pending the late election for
balloting for president; that I proposed
or agreed to any terms with the federal
party, or with any individual of either
party j that I affiented to be held up in
opposition to him, or attempted to with
draw from him the vote or support of any
man, whether in or out of Congress; that
ALL SUCH ASSERTIONS AND INTIMATI
ONS ARE FALSE AND GROUNDLESS.
I have not thought that calumny, un
supported by proof or ike authority of a
mme t could so far receive attention from
the public as to require an answer or even
a denial; yet if you (hall imagine that
any declaration from me can be neceflary
to remove doubts from the mind of one
honed man, you may confider this letter
as submitted to your diferetion, to publish
if you (hall think proper.
Accept, I pray you, my thanks for
your friendly solicitude, and affiuranccs
of the high refpeft and consideration with
which I am.
Your obed’t ferv’t,
. ' A. BURR.
Bis excellency Governor 8100-nfidd .
WASHINGTON CITY, Oaober r.
We this day offer to our readers the
mod interesting details, in the foreign
prints, refpefting the mnu measures a
dspted by Buonaparte . From the day
this man substituted force in the room of
taenational will, by depoung the Direc
tory and dispersing the councils, we have
hud but one opinion. We diftinftly per
ceived that nothing could juftify the out
age but the principles of military usur
pation. Those principles have since been
rapidly developed. One blow aimed at
liberty has succeeded another, until no
thing but the name, and indeed scarcely
now remains.
The late aft of the Consul diftated to
'he French People the duty of naming
frionaparte First Consul for life. The
htnjrte declares (marvellous declaration !)
'hatoutof 3,577,259 votes, 3,568,185
in the affirmative.
With this the iufatiable ambition of
®>litary usurpation is not fatisfied. But
®?der the cover of this munificent inve
“iturc of power, the Consul seizes, with.
° ut confuting the People, the (till great-
\ r power of naming his fucceffior. - Even
of prerogative is inefficient.
*ht old Constitution is destroyed, and a
r,ew one rises on its ruins, without the
fanftion of the People. This Con. .
it i tut Son CQ.:Jjudaies, to use the Isnguagfe
of the Senate, all power in the hands of
the First Consul, even that of Taxation.
These remarks are not made from any
difrefpeft to the government of France,
They are made, that the people of Ame
rica may realife the felicity of their lot;
that they may rejoice in the fccurity of
their rights; that they may cherilla a per
petual jcaloufy of military authority;
that they may keep alive their warmest
afireftions for republicanism, and check
the flighted deviation from it. It was
infamous in Rome for any man to dcfpair
of the Republic; let it be infamous with
us for any man to plot the overthrow of
republicanism. Rome used to treat the
foreign world as barbarians. Let us
while we extend to them the offices of hu
manity, decline all political intercourse
that is not absolutely necefl'ary.
