l3. from the National Intelligencer. Anonymous detraction has attempted, through the federal prints, to inflame the public sentiment refpeCling the iflue of the p e laware Election, by the imputation of charges as unfounded as atrocious. De. la'.vare is divided into the three counties 0 f Mew-Castle, Kent, and Sussex. In the tirlt county the republicans have tri umphed by avast majority j while io the tvvo last the federalills have had a majori ty. Accordingly no calumny is too gross to impute to the former, and no encomi uin too extravagant to bellow on the lat - ter . An indecent attempt is made by re viling the voters of New-Castle, to agitate t he paflions of Kent and Suflex, and to deltroy the fublilling harmony between them and New-Castle. It is (aid that a large portion of the votes of New-Castle are illegal and corrupt while all the votes of Kent and Sullex are averred to be legal and pure. The former are fa id to have been fvvclled by aliens and rene gadoes, regardless of their oaths, and without charaCler, to obtain whose votes Iwfe and improper means were used, by which New-Castle has obtained an undue political weight, to the deprivation of ihe other counties of their legitimate ihare. Let us examine these charges. In point of general relpeCtability of character, the county of New-Castle has been pre-eminent. It is the moll popu lous, the best informed, and the weaithi eft county in the Hate. A large portion of its population conllftsof friends, whose indufti# and probity are proverbial. By these remarks it is not meant in the leall to derogate from the character of the other counties. So far then the republicans of Delaware Hand upon the firmeft ground. A different view will Ihew in other re fpeds that they Hand upon ground equally firm. The votes given (land thus: Bayard . Rodney. Total. New-Castle, 707 1,664 2,371 Kent, 1,162 943 2,105 Suflex, 1,537 844 2.351 6,827 According to the late census, the num bers of the refpeClive counties, deducting Haves, Sec. New-Castle, 23,52 3 . Kent, 18,069 Suflex, 16,528 58*120 According to the refpeClive numbers of the counties, had each voted proportion ally, of the whole number of votes given, viz. 6,827, w °t have had the following number of votes; New-Castle, 2,776 Kent, 2,135 Suflex, 1,916 Had these been the votes given, and had the majorities and minorities borne the fume proportion with those of the votes actually given, the following would have been the result; Republican, Fed. Kew-Caftle, 1,944 832 Kent, 957 1,178 Suflex, 663 1,253 3»564 Republican majority, 301 Thus it appears that the county of New-Castle, so far from having had in the late election an undue weight, did not enjoy that weight to which her numbers tntitied her. It (hews also that Suflex enjoyed more than her due weight. If then charges of unfairnefs and fraud are made, to whom are they molt applicable ? To the county whose votes are compara bly small, or to that county whose *otes are comparatively great ? It is not Jlleged that there was fraud or unfairnefs in either county ; but it is contended that if they are to he aferibed to either, they ®ay be imputed, with more force, to Kent l nd Suflex, than to New-Castle county. Let us then hear no more of these vague vicious calumnies. Whether they proceed from infuriate disappointment, or J nti.republican hatred, they are equally *nworthy of any one who pretends to the Aarafttr of a good citizen, . If unfairnefs or fraud ever pollute the of fuffrage, let them be proved, and punilhed ; but let riot the bndiary of the public peace, because be 15 disappointed, revile the honell exercise tfthe very right he profeffes to dlecra «cred, CONNECTICUT ELECTION. On Thursday last the votes ol the frec ®en of the'(late of Connecticut, for mem to reprefcnl them in the eighth Con • greis of the tTnlted States, were counted. To the Editors o f the Gazette of the U. S. Wilmington, Off. 20, 1802. Sirs—Not redding in Wilmington in the fumrner season, it was not till yester day I heard of a paragraph in one of your papers, flared to be ** an cxtraft of a let ter from a refpedahle gentleman in Wil mington,” charging me with holding a diftriil court for the express purpose of admitting aliens to citizenlhip, to vote for the democratic candidate Ctefar Rod ney. As this is a flagrant impeachment of the impartiality and integrity of my condud as a judge, I mud demand your author. The imputation is as falfc as it is ma licious, and it the person had ever been admitted to my society, he would have known, that it has long been my fixed o pinion, that one of the sources of the evils of our country is, the too easy ad miflion of foreigners to a participation in the affairs of our government, and their interference therein; of course that I should extremely regret, the fate of any of our elections being influenced by them, and particularly that of the date in which I reside. He raufl also know, that I have too much charafler at flake, ever to pro stitute my official situation, to the mean purposes of party. Impartiality, will, I presume, induce you to make this public.
