The conjugating Dutchman.— VV e know not where the following story crnne from ; : ut as it gives a clrole picture of a metho dical and persevering Dutchman, it may not prove unentertaining. “ Two English gentlemen once stepped into a coffee house in Paris, where they observed a tall, odd looking man who appeared not to he a native, sitting at one of the tables, and I looking around with the most stonv-like I gravity of countenance upon every object. ! They went into a neighboring alley, and jha Englishman, unsheathing his weapon’ s.wi to his antagonist, 4 Now, Sir, you h;wU fight me.— 4 I fight, replied the other, diawing his sword, ’thou tightest, he fights, we fight’ here he made a thursf—‘you fight, they fight;’aud here he disarmed his adversary.— 4 Well,’ #ai<l thv Englishman, 4 you have the best pf if, and I hope you are satisfied.’ i am satisfied,’ said the original, shea- L thing his sword, 4 thou art satisfied, he is B satisfied, we are satisfied, v< u are satis- Curious Punishments.—The following! collection of a few of the many curious j punishments, inflicted for various offences j is copied frory the old records of Massa- j chusetts, between the years 1030 and j 1650. 44 Sir Richard Salstontall, fined lour ■ bushels of malt, for his absence from court. 44 Josias Plastow, shall, for stealing four baskets of corn from the Indians, return them eight baskets again, be fined £5 and hereafter be called Josias, and not Mr. as J he used to be. A little 1 ravelling F renoh- ruan chanced to breakfast at a tavern tu company with a tall, honey, Jonathan, whose appetite was in proportion to the magnitude of his frame and who ate more at a meal than 1. tie Monsieur would have We stated in a paragraph yesterday, that it was supposed, that Morgan’s body was found, washed ashore on the borders of lake Ontario, Morgan has been absent nearly a year and a half, we, therefore did not suppose that any body ’/culd think it was the body of “that distinguished per sonage*” The fish would have eaten him up a year since. Besides, we have the grave-digger’s opinion in Ilumlet, of the , effect of fresh water upon the human sys tem. Let those who really feel somecu- j riosity about the affair, bear in mind, that j it is now election time in New Y»i k—“and ever (Amut this time it doth appear.” Poor Morgan is apostrophised in New York state, at every election, as often and pa thetically as was poorYoric in the church yard.— U. S. Gazette. Extract of a letter from a gentleman in i Rochester to his friend in Albany, dated 26th inst. The body found at Oak Orchard Creek proves not to be that of Morgan, but a man from Canada. I believe it has been satisfactorily proved by the wifo of the dead man which was found, that it was Iter husband. She proved that the clothes found on the btrdy were those of her hus band, or the same that he had on when he left home, and likewise that the shoes he had on were a pair that he bought at the time he left home ; this was proved by, the person of whom he bought them.— The tracts that were found in his pockets were proved to have been given him by a minister before he left. The wife and friends I believe intend removing the body from Batava to Canada, and have sent word to the Rochester committee of their intention. It is very generally be lieved that the body found was not that of Morgan.—Alb. Site has three masts, rigged fore and aft fashion as it is called, or similar to the ordinary schooner. Her standing rigging is all of iron, served with rope yarn—the shrouds are continuous bars, aud the crass pieces, usually termed rattlings, are strips of wood. The stays are composed of long links about a yard in length. The tomigae of this nondescript is 336 torts, custom house measure. She is expected to sail very fast, and it is said work well, as vvax tested by iter working out of mile’s River, where she was' built under the directioE of Captain Miles King against wind and tide. The great | advantage of the schooner-rig in sailing j oil's wind, would we suppose, recommend the fashion of this vessel particularly in navigating long rivers. The rigging is said to be much lighter than the hempen- cordage. If the opinion lately urged in English papers be correct, that there is less danger of the Electric Fluid, when Miniature Painting.
