Acting under his advice, I presented
the charter to the Legislature in the form
of an act of incorporation. This had not
been done long before I discovered in
the opposition arraigned against it the
iuterest it was to affect on the State.—
j Notwithstanding that we asked for none
I of the “aicf* which was being lavishly
! bestowed upon the multitude of railroads
[ chartered at this session, our enterprise
| was met with an opposition in the Leg
islature, the very organization and open
ly declared purpose of which evidenced
the fact that rival corporations were at
least afraid of its power. This opposi
tion was by persistent effort overcome
and the charter granted by a very small
majority vote in both branches of the
“developing” General Assembly. As
soon as I returned to Savannah and could
do so, I presented the charter to the
Board of Directors of the Central Rail
road in session, believing that it was from
the circumstances of my relations the
property of this corporation.
It was then for the first time that I heard
directly the views of Mr. Wadley, the

Mr. Wadley, in the frankness and delib-
eration.eharacteristic of the gontleman,
stated to me, that under the circumstan
ces then existing the Central Railroad
could not aid in the construction of the
Atlanta and Savannah Railroad, cither as
a brunch of tho Central, or as an inde
pendent line of railway, aud that as far as
the interests of his road wore oonoerned,
he did uot appreciate the necessity for its
constritttion. The action of thu Board
of Directors was in harmony with Mr.
W'.idb y’s views, as expressed to me, and
thus tenuinatod all connection whatever
of the Central Railroad with our enter
prise.
Up to this time I considered that I
had been acting as an attorney for the
Central Railroad, with the interest of an
attorney in tho work wliioh had been
completed by him, and as a citizen of
Georgia, with the iutereats of a citizen
iu the results to accrue to this seaport,
the city of Atlanta aud the people aloug
tho lino of the projected road from Teu-

up and found him iu a liquor shop, hi
was too much btupitied to be able to give
an order. Before another hour had
passed, Lake Shore stock had taken u

could get no orders from the speculator,
aud as the “margin” was uot sufficient
to enable the broker to hold on to the
stock, in face of the further decline
which was threatened, he sold it out at
an actual loss of five thousand dollars.—
If the speculator had “realized” when
the stock was on the rise, instead of get
ting tight on a four dollar bottle of chani-

instead of the loser of fiv* thousand dol

then ho lost his money easily and expe
