instead of pointed back and front,
and are trimmed with lace insertion
and edging.
Humes and ruchings of laoe for
the neck and sleeve* are more in favor
thin season than they have been for
several seasons.
White kid gloves are no loi
worn with full evening dress,
preference being given to lavender,
light grey or yellow.
Russia leather belts, with large
buckles and small bags attached at
the sides, are very much worn by
ladies with all styles of dresses, par
ticularly muslin.
Very wide braid or Telvet is now
used for binding the edge of street
costume, since the new styles of wear
ing long dresses in the street would
otherwise ruin and discolor them
very quickly.
Very handsome toilettes are of
black China crepe overdresses, elabo
rately embroidered, and worn over
black silk, with small ruffles. A
slevolcss jacket of crepe is worn over
a black silk waist, with long sleeves.
The new style of bonnets for next
fall are suid to be something really
new, and many milliners think that
they will have to hire a few people to
wear them, so as to get people used
to their decidedly unique appearance.

Many young chili
‘rls
and half
grown girls are afflicted with curva
ture of the spine, which is produced,
the doctors affirm, by requiring them
to practice several hours a day on the
piano without any support for the
backs or feet.
l'oung men who use perfumed note
paper and gilt and red monograms,
tinted cards, embroidered handker
chiefs and shirt fronts, lace neck-ties
and fancy sleeve buttons, must not
be surpised ;if k they are considered
effeminate and foppish.
The old style of presenting each
guest at a wedding with a box, con
taining a liberal slice of wodding cake,
to take home and dream on, has again
come into fashion, and is much more
sensible and agreeable to all parties'
than having an elaborate cuke in the
centre of the table for every one to
look ut and lie aggravated by the
smell of it.—New York Mail.
A Texas Snake Story.
A Texas correspondent of a New
York paper gives the following snake
story: “One night my wife and ray-
seif wore awakened by a noise, from
the shelf which contained our small
store of crockery, followed by a crash
which showedf thaif a great por
tion of our cups and plates hod been
(lung to the floor. Springing up to
discover the author ol this “attack
upon China,” I found a large snake
in a somewhat unpleasant fix. lie
had crawled upon the shelf, attracted
bv a number of eggs which ho saw
scattered about.' ^Une'of these he had
swallowed, and in order to get at the
next, he lmd put his head and a por
tion of bis body through the handle
of a jug which Imppcnod to stand
between the coveted delicacies. Tho
handle was just open enough to let
his body in the natural shape, slip
through, but not sufficient to let it
pass wlieu paired out by the ogg. In
this position be bad swallowed the
second egg. Ills snakeship thus
found himself unable to advance or
retreat; and in llomidcring abont to
escape from this novel stock, had
caused tho accident which had urolig-
ed us. 1 of course proceeded at onec
to execute summary justice upon the
interloper, lull the eggs he hud swal
lowed were a dead loss.

ghost. It is a lady, who died long
years agone, with u broken heart, for
u faithless lover. On her bosom still
rest the llowcrs that he lost gave her;
and, though they have faded and
withered away, their fragranco still
remains, So, in the dead of night,
through the antique chamber, passes
a beautiful woman, with silken robes
that rustle softly, with diamonds uud
rubies gleaming' Utftillv in the weird
light, with slow-moving, mournful
eyes, looking ever for a face that was

The Washington Patriot says: Al
though tho Departments are crowded
with supernumerary clerks, tho public
business is sadly in arrears in many of
the bureaux. It is said that tho Second
Auditor's Office, with its large force, and
the Commissioner of Customs, aud oth
ers, are behindhand several years. This
deranged condition of things comes from
the demoralization which pervades the
civil scrvic", and the utter disregard of
everything but more partisanship, in the
appo/otmenfcs to office. How is it to be
expected, when the President neglects
his duty by lone and frequent absences
from the Capitol, and the Cabinet follow
his example, that subordinates, who roly
upon Congressional support for their re
tention, should be more attentive or
faithful ? The service takes its tone from
the Executive. If he is strict and vigi
lant and upright, that rule of oonductwiU
govern the Departments just as the pres
ent laxi tv, unfitness aud negligence arc
felt in all their operations.
