The Springfield (Mass.) Republican
ha* the following account of a cow
ardly outrage perpetrated upon a wo
man by a gang of ruffians. Could
auch a thing occur in any country
nableased with the high moral ideas
of Massachusetts? live think not,
and are very sure that nothing of the
tort could happen in Mi* land of dark
ness and savagery. The Republican
say a:
Justice Davis, of Greenfield, on
Saturday, held Henry Wright, Ueo.
O. Nelson, Herrin Murcy and Thoa.
Marry, of Charlemont, tor their out
rageous assault upon Mrs. I.aura
A. Harris, of that town, whom they
meant to punish for udultery. Mrs.
Harris’ testimony was that on the
evening of the 18th of April, while
she was sitting at the chamber win
dow of her husband’s house, a crowd
appeared in the street. Masked men
knocked at the door, and then entered
through the cellar, after being told by
the husband that if they did so it
would be at their peril. Harris was
seized and bound, although he was
armed with a revolver, aud the cham
ber door was broken down with an
axe by four or five of the ringleaders.
Mrs. Harris was found liehind a bu
reau, dragged out and down into the
street. Her hands were tied behind
her, and her mouth covered to smother
her cries of “murder.” She was car
ried iutoatield, held upon the ground,
her stockings hauled of, her clothes
thrown over her hcu<J, aud her per
son, from her waist down, smeared
with tar and feathers; tar was also
S oured from a pan upon her head.—
he begged them to let her go, prom
ising to leave town if they would do
so, and she was finally (eft in tho
tiehl, mid allowed to go home.

EARTHQUAKE.
The People of New York and
Vicinity “Shook Up a Little.”
Reports received from various quar
ters aII tend to confirm tho statement,
at first received with some credulity,
of a shock of earthquake having lieen
felt at 10 o’clock on Sunday night,
running in a direction formingalmost
a complete circle around the city of
New York. '
Among the more or less authenti
cated details to hand, the following
arc the most noteworthy:
In Staten Island a gentleman heard
a rumbling noise, followed by a shock
and a slight upheaving of the earth.
In Long Island, Jamaica and Ridge
wood, it appears the people were
greatly alarmed by the shock, and
rushed from their beds into the
streets. At Hoboken, Woehawken,
and other points in Jersey, the noise
heard resembled the drugging of
heavy wagons over a rough road, but
very much kinder, as may lie supposed.
The shock was felt in Brooklyn, neur
the Fulton Ferry, and several resi
dents of 111,-it locality are reported to
have been dreadfully alarmed by the
shaking of their hnuseiTand the rat
tling of tlieir windows. A storm
raged on the Sound during the con
vulsion on terra Anna. In Fast
Brooklyn a low, rumbling noise was
heard, and most of the accounts de
scribed the noise as somewhat like
dragging heavy furniture over the
floor, or the rumbling of wagons over
an uneven road. Long Island, in
short, appears to have received the
full benefit of the tidal wave, and va
rious stories are told of honest citizens
frightened almost out of tlieir wits
by the strange phenomenon; and
the dumb animals shared the general
terror caused hv the trembling of the
earth and the (full, rumbling subter
ranean noises. Farmingdale, Brent
ford and Smithtmvn were more or
less favored witli more or less impres
sive demonstrations, and we are told
that, “no wagons in the streets, nor
even a dozen trains running togeth
er, could have caused sueli a dreadful
rattling, rumbling and shaking.-
Williamsburg was spared the visita
tion. So was the citv of New York.
The Jackson Pilot has learned of
the robbery of the safe of the South
ern Express Com;>aiiy, on hoard of a
southward bound train on the Mobile
and Ohio Railroad, last Sunday morn
ing, when within a short distance of
Meridian. The Pilot says:
II appears that the train from the
North, and due at Meridian at about
two a. m, had an express safe of the
Southern Express Company on hoard,
coupling about 110,000 in currency,
for different parties. When within a
short distance of Meridian two men
were seen to jump from the train, hut
no attention w as paid to the fact until
the express messenger awoke and
went to assort his packages. Then
he says he discovered the loss of his
money, envelopes, safe and all. lie
says lie had been asleep duriug the
last run of about eighteen miles, and
denies all knowledge of the transac
tion.
As soon as [Kissible search was made
for the missing safe by the messenger
and ofliccrs of the Express Company.
After some hours hud elapsed the
broken und empty sufe was found in
the woods. It had evidently been
thrown off the car, then dragged to
some underbrush and there Turced
open with the head of an axe. The
occupants ol' a cabin near by stated
thut two men hod come to tlieir place
in the night and borrowed their axe,
giving some excuse, and it was this
instrument with which the iron chest
hud been broken in.
There has been no trace of the rub-
liers discovered. No suspicion seems
to attach to the messenger or the men
connected with the train.

An linliana Tragedy.
A Chicago dispatch of the 23d
says: “A special to the Tribune, from
White Pigeon, Michigan, Suva that u
fearful tragedy occurred at the Stone
Lake school-house, at Van Buren, In
diana, ycstereluy afterniHin. Cliun-
cery Barnes and Addie Dwight, a
worthy young school-teacher, were
formerly engaged to Ik- married. Sub
sequently, Miss Dwight, finding him
unworthy, told him that she would
not ftiltill the engagement. Yester
day, during school hours, in company
with a young lady, Barnes proceeded
toward the school-house to call ou
Miss Dwight. Finding her near the
school-house with some of her schol
ars looking for a spot suitable for
holding a picnic, he requested her to
step one side, us he wished to sjieak
with her. She did so, he then asked
her if she intended to become his
wife. She answered, decidedly, no.—
He then drew a revolver and dis
charged two halls into her brain, kill
ing her instantly. He then tired four
shots into his own head. Barnes is
still slive, hut is sinking rapidly. He
has been taken to the Latirange
county (Indiana) jail. Intense ex
citement prevails in the vicinity, and
should Barnes show any sign of re
covery he will doubtless tie lynched.
The women have had another tri
umph. Those who presented them
solves for examination at the Inter
nal Bevenue Deportment, Washing
ton, under the new regulations of
Gen. Pleasanton, have just passed the
ordeal with (lying colors, and receive
the same saluries os men would in
the same positions, although the ex
amination was particularly stringent
and severe. Tho lady who took the
highestgrude failed not in the slight
est particular, while several gentle
men, graduates of colleges were sent
back, having made the most egregious
blunders. The women insist ujion it
that they are questioned more closely
and criticully than the men, und not
one of them bus committed such an
error as to give “its” as the plural of
it, or lieen unable to tell in what di
rection Washington, or any other city,
was from the North Pole, as was the
case with male applicants.
The New York World says: “Yes
terday a venerable gentleman disem
barked from the West Point boat,
and in attempting to cross West
Btroct, found Ins way impeded by an
unending train of vehicles. He saw
a policeman near hv, and beckoned
him to approach. Reverence for age
■atised the policeman to obey and ad
vance. Tlie old gentleman inquired
if ho belonged to the army. ‘No, sir,
I am a policeman,’ was the answer.—
Exactly,’ responded the old man,
‘you belong to Tammany. Can I
get ucross this stroetl’ ‘Cer
tainly/ responded the policeman, ‘I
will conduct you across.’ The old
gentleman was soon safe on the other
side. The policeman turned to go
hack, when the old gentleman called
him hack and said; ‘Mr. Policeman,
do yon know who you have just con
ducted across the street?’ The po
liceman replied Hint he had not that
pleasure. ‘Well, sir, 1 will tell you—
I am the fa'her i f President Grunt.’
The old •• tiileiinui then turned on
his heel uith dignity in the direction
of the Long Brunch boat.

The Washington correspondent of

A remarkable triitmiih of surgical
skill is chronicled in the Louisville
palters. A few weeks ago a little boy,
six years of age, while playing on tlie
sluirwav of the Galt House, fell adiss
tancc of seventy feet, algihting upon
a stone floor, from which he was
raised apparently a Useless, shapeless
mass. In the course of his fall he
stniek a projecting corner of the
staircase, breaking an inch board
across the grain, und further down
he struck ami broke an oak baluster
an iuck in diameter. Numerous
fractures and a terrible scalp wound
were produced by this frightful fall.
The right arm wits crushed into pieces
above and below the clliow, both lej
were broken at and near the ank
joints, and innumerable contusions
were received all over the laxly.—
Notwithstanding these drendfril'in
juries, under skillful surgical cure
the child not only recovered, but now
has perfect use of all his limbs.
The amount of internal revenue
collected thus far during the fiscal
year is almost A139,000,000, and the
commissioner* estimate that it will
amount to about $146,000,000 by the
first of next month. This is $20,-
000,000 more than Mr. Delano, in his
report last December, estimated would
be collected this year, and shows an
increase of about 16 per cent, in the
business of the country from which
internal revenue is dorived. As the
production of whiskey has greatly
falleu off, the increase in other
branches mvst have Irvu considerably
greater.
The Washington oorvespomleut of the
Cincinnati Commaroial says it is now gen
erally understood that General Pleasan
