ottntetA mswa bOUlteS-co. **#*0. «**• Under the able tatrilQe and kind treatment of Ptof. Williams, its ac complished Superintendent, this in stitution la at ouee a blaming and <jr- nament to the State. Thirty puptli receite initmction, many of whom are Matty proficient in focal and in strumental mnuc. Indeed, Prof Williams annonnoe* that quite f number will toon be admirably quali fied to go forth ae teachers of music. The more advanced pupils instruct the others, and a* an evidence of their capacity, a bright little girl of nine summers, the daughter of the Superintendent, executed several dif ficult peiccs on the piano with snoh taste and accuracy, though a blind pupil had been her only instructor. One child, eight years old, who had been entered in April, oonld spell with ease, and actually play a march on the piano. The reading of the lit tle girls, through the medium of raised letters, anl the arithmetical sums worked out on the curious slate invented for the blind, astonished the audience. It was a touching specta cle to behold these children of dark ness and sorrow, in tall communion with the outer world, and able now actually to enjoy life, through the munificent endowment of the State, and the skill of their devoted instrnc- tor. From theThofltosvlll* Enterprtao. A gentleman, who has juit made a tour of the county, reports the crops in a worse condition than we had supposed them. Huch of the corn is still small, and where it is in the glass and the ground sobbed by the excessive rains, is turning yellow and promise bnt little yield. Be reports the cotton generally backward, and in some instances quite grassy. This crop, however, should the rams abate uml a propitious tall ensue, will be greatly redeemed and moke a fair yield; while the increased area in corn, even though the seasons should oon- tin uc unfavorable, will, in our opinion, insure at least an average supply. Fran the TTorrentoa Clipper, Jana 96. I The dwelling of Mrs. W. 0. John son, about seven miles from this place, was struck by lightning on last Sun- lav evening. We learn that Mrs. J. was severely, but not dangerously, in jured thereby. From Ik. Haenn Tatafnpk. J»», SO. A negro lad alsmt 14 years old, and n servant, we believe, at the Lanier House, was drowned yesterday after noon about 4 o’clock, while in the river bathing, at the foot of tSpring street, where the colored people usu ally do theirbaptizing. lus body was recovered in about one hour after the accident From the Columbus Sun, 80th. About 10 o’clock Wednesday night, Henry Evaus culled Berry Smith from his house on Front street, and with a pistol, shot at him. The ball missed Smith but grazod the cheek of his sister.
