A special detachment of the Metropolitan police is posted at the' vari- ions dockyards, 61(1 altogether being dis tributed between Woolwioh, Portsmouth, Depthford, Chatham and Pembroke.— The work of watching the metropolis of Loudon is entrusted to 22 superintendents of polios, 207 inspectors, 828 sergeants and 8832 oonatublue, making a force of 7886 men who are on duty by day and by night. The chief work, however, is done at night. Oat of the men ou duty in 1870 only 121 were charged before the magistrates for violating the regulations of the force, and 626 received rewards for servioe from the commissioner, thirty-two occasions the police ' * by the magistrates.
