The Butler county (Ohio) Demo
crat, edited by a scholar and patriot,
after printing our oowments upon
the platform of principles adopted
by the State Convention, echoes back
tnc following patriotic sentiments.—
We stated at the time that these weak,
vacillating and time-serving enunci
ations were not the sentiments of the
Ohio Democracy. And it is now
publicly announced that they were
conceived and brought forth at the
St Nicholas Hotel, m New York, by
a set of Policy-mongrel demagogues,
and sent out and imposed upon the
unsuspecting people of Ohio and
Pennsylvania W e again repeat what
we have heretofore stated, that it is
out belief that the sentiments of iiine-
tenths of the Democratic party in
these States are opposed to abanelon-
iug the time-honored principles of
the party. Of our article the Demo
crat says:
•The above ipeaks our sentiments, and
we cheerfully endorse every line and ev
ery sentiment contained in it. It is both
Democratic end patriotio, and if every
Democratic editor in the lend would
rtinip**'* boldly the seme principles end
ontompromieuigly advocate and defend
them, the restoration of the glorious
Union of tbe fathers would soon dissipate
the gloom end horror of deepotism, rob
bery, brutality and crime, which Mon
grel oonepiratora end Oodlees fan.tice
have forced upon our onco prosperous
«iwl happy country. Determined oppo
sition to ueuipetsou and revolution and
ell their atrocious results, is the only
hope of the Bepuhlio end civil liberty.—
The least compromise, the slightest ac
quiescence in the abominations ul the
dominant party, is uot only detest to tbe
Democracy but it is fetal to every hope
of tbe re-eetabliahmeut of the Govern <
ment under the Federal Constitution.—
Others may cower before despotism and
bend tbe knee before pride and bombast,
and seek to propitiate tbe destroyers ol
their eountay’s peace and happiness; but
for ns, we never, ukvbb, will cease our
opposition to the infamous usurpations
and tyrannical acts of the Mongrel dy
nasty, as long as we have power to wield
the pen in defense of truth and right."
—Oreentboro, <Jul, Herald, July
Hlapilsr Freak of the Storm
King.
The storm which passed over our city
on Monday afternoon played wild antics
on a gentleman's plantation in lieaoh Is
land, South Carolina. Two adjoining
fields, each containing one hundred acres,
surrounded by e high, strong, end per-
ieotly new rail lenoe, were planted one in
corn and the other in cotton, both of
which were in splendid order and grow
ing finely. A perfect hurricane, accom
panied by s deluge of min end hail, swept
over these two fields, leaving the sur
rounding country literally untouched.
The com was completely riddled by
the hail, the fodder being rendered unlit
for polling, and the ootton battered and
beat down in such a manner that the
owner is afraid that it is ruined past re
demption. The fencing, which was ss
substantial as all fenoee can be made, was
prostrated to the ground, while a large
hickory tree, which had stood in the field
for many yean, was tom up by the roots.
8s ratal other trees were blown down, and
the area presents the appearance of hav
ing been swept by a besom of destruc
tion. Not a drop of rain fell in the
neighborhood.—Vonstituticmdist, 12th.
