A Hoiunxitic Sketch of tier Ufe.
The Philadelphia Evening Tele
gram furnishes the following bketeli
of the lift of Mrs. E. Wliurtou, of
Baltimore, who ii charged with poii-
oniug General Ketchnm.
ELLim a. KUU*KT
was horn in this oity about forty-five
yours ngo. Her father, George Nugent,
vms » most prominent anil sureensfal
mnrriifuit of tim'd ay, doing u largo im|Kir-
ting business of fine goods, silks, etc. *
In character lie was strictly upright anil
honorable, living us it wore by a sot mle
of firmness and jnatioe to nil. ilis daugh
ter Ellon was by iiis second wife, he hav
ing born previously married to a (Julian
woman, by whom he lud two children,
both lioys, one of whom is now a re«-
pcctablo and prosjitrons member of oili-
community. Tlioro were nix other chil
dren by the second wifo, four sous anil
two daughters, Both of tlioso daughters
arc married and living in the city. Uor
mother, Urn. Nugent, has only been
dead a few years, having outlirod her
husband, who died about the time of the
great California gold excitement.
Of all Mr. Nngent'achiidrcn his daugh
ter,
NELUL. WAS UIS UXJL;
ho lavished every attention upon her
that money conki command. Espeoial
pains were taken with lior education, and
she spent considerable time at Bishop
Doano’s semiuery, in Burlington, New
Jersey. And now the real interest of
our story commences. Nellie has grown
up under onr pencil into beautiful wo
manhood, and'her mature character is
boginning to determine itself. The
soone is the Gulf Mills House, and the
time is about twanty-fivo years ago.
By tbe universal voieo of thoso who
knew her at this time, she was certainly
A most lovely girL About twenty years
of age, of slender nnd graceful, yot
queenly bearing, with magnificent jot
black hair of uuuauul length, dark oyce,
nnd fair complexion—snob was her phys
ical beauty. But those who knew hor
will say that that was the least of her at
tractions. It wss rather her engaging
manner, her winning ways, her dashing,
inspiring disposition that bound captive
at tho oliariot-whocl of Cupid so many of
hor male acquaintances.
It was about this time that she began
to dovoiop a passion that has over since
boon inonlinutc with her, and that was
tho
Ilgams to nusua iiaunificentsy
Her father spared no oxponso to gratify
her lightest whim, und gave her money
enough to clothe a duchess. Hor father
allowed her to cutty tho Jiurso of a
duchess, and eonseqnenily the reader
can judge of his surprise when outside
bills that had boon contracted by his
daughter to the amount of thousands of
dollars were sent in' to him for soltlo-
mrnt, and all this heavy running into
debt hud taken place in a comparatively
short time, nial w ithout the slightest pre
monitory intelligence.
Where had the money gone? Hardly
upon herself, since, although always ele
gantly attired in obedience to fashion’s
latest inundate, this debt exocss was too
absurdly largo to bo answered for on the
ground of personal expenditure. But a
little invi stigntion showed, It was found
that this mouey hail l>e>en expended for
lucus, silks, jewelry, etc., etc., which woro
lavished with an imperial baud ns pres
ents upon her yonng friends.
This was ocrtninly a little i-cccntric,
and quite enongh to cause tho eye brow
to raise. Beautiful young ladies do not
generally ruu thoir fathers into debt sim
ply to givo away indiscriminately costly
gifts. But
SOMBTU1KO MORK RTKANUE
was yet to coma, Tho debts wero paid
by the fatlior, aud tho current of events
drifted along toward the most remarka
ble fouturo of this ivmnrkahlo woman’s
life.
Miss Nellie wus tho brilliant oontro of
a large circle of people of tho licit class
in that vicinity. Ho that when, shortly
aftor, ooch oud all of them roeoivod uli
invitation to tho marriage of that young
lady, yon may bo sure It created some
little stir of excitement. At longtli tlio
auspicious hour rollod round, aud all tho
invited guests assembled at tho Nugent
mansion to witness tho marriage of tho
beauty. Great preparations had been
made for the event. Mr. Nugont a as de
termined that tho daughter who was queon
of his hoart should be mated ill a regal
manner. Never had the young girl look-
od so lovely, ns did tho brido, seated in
her satin and laoo with hor attendant
maids about her, and w*aiting with the
love-light in her eye, for tho happy
groom.
Tho hour at whioh tho nuptial knot was
to havo boon tied struck with n disrnoi
dang, and yet no bridegroom. Messen
gers wore sont in haste, and on thoir ro-
tiun they auuouuocd that Mr. H'ilUntns ii
HAD NOT CONTRACTED TUE MA11RUC.K.
and knew nothing about it
Subsequent investigation showed con
clusively that tho marriage had not the
slightest foundation, so far os any inten
tion of Mr. Williamson was concerned,
and people began to intimate that some
thing was wrong in hor head. Mr. Nn-
gont, after careful pondoring of the mat
ter, was resolved to have Nellie removed
to on aaylnm for the insane. It wanted
bnt a day or two of tho oxocution of tho
asylum projoct, when one morning it was
found that tho beautiful bird had flown
in tho night from the paternal nest But
in s very little whilo tno father received
intelligence that his daughter hail
eloped with young Lieutenant Harry W.
Wharton, had proceeded with him to
Philadelphia, had been there married.
TUN RUNAWAY OOUTLE
had not been long from home until they
received assurance of thoir forgivouess,
aud rctnrnod to tho houao at Gulf Mills.
Tlioy also lived for a time at Norristown,
nnd in Philadelphia again. It wasn't
long after maniuo until Mrs. Wharton
was in financial diffloultics again, whioh
woro again aottlod by hor indulgent
father.
After this her husband, who was cap
tain now, was stationed at Fort Kearney
for aornc five or seven years. Mrs. Whar
ton accompanied him, ns indeed she did
in all his wanderings, evon going down
into Texas with him on one occasion.—
While out upon tho plains the eve-sight
of the captain hud booome dofcctivo, and
lio nml his wifo rutnniod to Philadelphia
again.
At tlio breaking out of the war tho
captain got a commission in a Delaware,
regiment, and eventually wus nppoinh-i
followed him ovciywhere. Wc have also
seen that money was her great weakness.
Kht vras nearly always in difficulties of
this kind, anil would borrow from any
i no. This is of /urso to he accounted
for in a great measure by liar inordiuate
passion for dress. Wherever she
went she was bound to movo in tho
mont fashionable circles, which she iuvs-
liably adorned by her beanty and engag
ing deportment.
We do not propose, as wc said at tho
i tart, to touch upon the particulars oi
this most rcniai! dde cate. Mrs. Whar
ton now stands before the bar of justice,
charged with the mnrder and attempted
murder, und it norms to be the general
opinion Ibnt three or four more items
will lie added to tin rrim.mn list, two of
them tlio murder nf husband and son.—
Tho facts tlio public are already familiar
with; tlio theory that will embrace every
ease can never bo arrived at. Tlio whole
story only goes to allow that, keen as iI;el
been the scrutiny of human diameter
those thousands of years, it still lias 1111-
Houndad depths and undiscovered lati
tudes. And this
MOSt'MENTAI. CITY TRAGEDY,
whoso central flgnro is an elegant lady of
the first circles of society, only adds an
other stigma to the lengthy list that our
poots, philosophers, and scientists are
called upon to solve.
Onr sole purpose is to lay boforo the
public some facts that arc not known,
facts culled liy laborous search iu private
avonues of information, and which, com
bined, contain to a certain extent, the
private lifo of Mrs. Wharton, and throw
a great light upon what will most nec-
ossarily bo liar only ground of dofensc.
