A War of Ract k.
Tha Ntgvoti Hooted and Quirt Urtlnrcd.
A traveling agent of Thk Sun furnish-
os tho following particulars of the riot
whioh occurred at Entoutou on the 8th
instant. An election was being held that
day for a member of tho Legislature and
for county officers. Tho former was to
fill n vacancy occasioned by the death of
the member elect, and tho latter to fill
vacancies occasioned by tho inability of
the officers elect to give the bonds pre
scribed by law.
Tho olootion proceeded quietly until
about 10 o'clock, whon a negro using
some illegal effort to get in a vote, was
notiflod by an officer te desist. He drew
a knife on the Sheriff', but was arrested.
As he was being taken to jail a large num
ber of negroos collected and demanded
his release. Thia being refused someone
of thoir nnmbcr called upon them to nrro
themselves and release the prisoner.—
The whole crowd of them immediately
lushed out of town and in a very short
timo all returned armed, nnd ns soon ns
they came in range of Ibo whiten who
had been summoned by the Sheriff a« po
lice, fired upou them. This firo was return
ed by the whites, and for a few minutes
a battle between tho two races prevailed.
Over one hundred and fifty shots were fir
ed, the blacks opening, and the police re
turning, charging them fit tho same time.
Thoy seemed to think that n different
position would bo more “healthy,” and
retired with but little order the distance
Of ono block, behind a brick wall. Then
feeling secure they opened firo again,
seeming to think thero was no way to get
at them ex cop t down tho street in front
of them. But some of tho boys had
bocn to war before, and took odvantago
of a “flank movement,” and the. “brave
commander” and posse wero soon seen
flying from their fort droping muskets,
hats &c., as thoy ran.
During the hot firing between police
nnd negroes, behind the wall, it was ex
citing to see an old citisen, who had
boon ordered by the Sheriff, just previ
ous to the appearance of tlio negroes
with their guns, to go out and roport if
thero w*r» any sign of their return with
nrms, standing close to tho fence between
both fires. As he had no ohanco to
escape, ho defended himself by shooting
every time they attempted to expose
themselves around the cornrr so ns to
cnnhlo him to sec them. The old gen
tleman said lio thought liis six loads
would bo exhausted before the boys suc
ceeded in flanking them, «n»l should
tlany give out, ho had nothing to keep
them behind the comer, which saved
him from their determination to shoot
him. But fortunately the flanking party
•ucoeoded in routing them before bis re
peater was exhausted.
Tho contest was ended in fifteen min
utes—the policemen coming oat victori
ous. One wliito man was wounded
slightly, in tho ncol, and ono negro was
mortally wounded, living only about
twelve hours. The suppoStioB, from all
indications, is that tins negro was shot by
his own color—a stray shot coming from
their position.
It was regretted by the whites that
this boy should havo suffered, us he was
regarded as a good, inoffonsivo negro.
The polos were closed during tho row ;
but opened again shortly after, and every
body allowed to vote without further dis-
turlmnce. A nnmbcr of negroes op
posed, bitterly, tho course of their own
color in this affair.
