[Cbntinunl from page tiro.] Atleet-h of which he is Uioj...... cal editor, hue in which his whole heart k devoted lo a Houthcm repudiation of lliu Northern Detnucraoj on their "new departure." And to strengthen thio opinion that Mr. Stephen, ia the autlior of this pamphlet we ere told in it (Part Second) that “that glorious banner, which was so aadly furlod at Appomattox, will onoe moio fly freely from the Capi tol a*. Richmond, and ho who of right ought to sit there (Jeff. Davis, of course) to preside over our destiny, will be re called from his retirement amid the re joicings of a redeemed people." Now, all this may bo very absurd; but it cannot be denied that the Southern programme here presented furnishes new and striking interpretation of the late speeches of Jeff Davis in Alabama ' and Georgia on the "acceptance of the sitaalioo.” He accepts nothing, he ad- mig nothing, and he will do nothing to ward the "aooeptam-e of the situation.” Mr. Stephens, in hit new paper, holds the same position. “’Fore God,” as Dogberry puts it, “they are both in tale. ” There ia evidently an understand ing betwen them. Davis proclaimed his position, and Btephens takes it up ss the “new departure" of the “loet cause."— Upon this theory there is mischief in this thing. It demolishes the Democratic party in the Sonth. It revives the issues of the war in a new shape. It explains the Ku-Klux Klaus and the Ku-Klux bill It giTes color to what General Grant lately said to our correspondent at Long Branch on the Treaty of Washing ton. He feared another war with the Sooth, and hence his great desire for peace with England. But may not this pamphlet be a Republican counterfeit ? We hope so; but we fear that it is not It has all the ear-marks of a Southern manifesto, and doubtless it speaks the sentiments and the purposes of a large body of Southern men. If there is any man within this call who knows that this is not a Southern manifesto let him speak: for we learn that this pamphlet is even now in course of distribution to all the known friends of the “lost cense”— North, South, East and West.—New York Herald, ijlh August, 1871. A Voice from Virginia. Oka*cock, Aooomao Co,. Viboisui, August 23rd, A. D. 1871. Editon Atlanta Sun: Having departed from the oity of fra ternal affection for a short visit to the "rest of mankind”—as General Harrison said; that is, the eastern shore of Virgin ia, I thought it might be Interesting to know something of the political status here. I regret to state that the worthy people here are too insentient npon political subjects; They hare boen so often out raged and insulted, that like the Israelites in the wilderness they are ready to curse the leader who is to oonduct them to the Promised Land and willing almost to turn back into the land of their enemies and pereeeotore. They say they want nothing to do with politics, so a man nanseated wants nothing to do with food; but must he not get his stomach in oondition to receive food? If not he.will die; it is his very existence, and the people here cannot ignore poli- (Nrtment by a gland jury. Ho could not uroemro ‘“‘V »■*« *“ partially m.uuuiwi- MJ in hit incarceration, sympathized with, and pro posed to marnt him, provided tua custodians would release inm. Thu arrangement was satisfactory; and *"* » bar room, a Justice of thu tics, for politics will not let them alone. They slionld be aroused from the lethargy into which they seem to have fallen. There liaa been much to disooorage them, but they ahould not despair, and it is absolute suicide for them to give themselves up to this indifference which possesses many. They often fail to real ize the importance of sending their best men to legislate for them. They seem to think the voting; privilege a farce. It ia want of faith in the eternal principles that govern the true and tried Democra cy. It is want of fa’th, and like the Is raelites when about to receive the true Promises and Commandments, they are building for themselves a "golden calf” that wiU bring desolation and sorrow. We trust that there are enough right eous ones here to preclude the fate of a Sodom or a Gomorrah, and that the two faithful tribes may yet save their race aud oountry. I shall try to get The Sun among them, and let its congenial glowworm their (hilled spirits into a life of true Demo cratic activity. They have no less a duty to perform now than upon the battle fields of the revolution—for "peace has its vit- tories no less rewarded than war." It is ;o the trumpet tones of The Sum, and journals like it, that we expect the arous ing of our people’s slumbering spirit.-. Its blows at “Departure" is the key note, for in this indifference of the people ia found much advocacy of the "New De parture.” The citizens here are much in the con dition of the Democrats North, and they should learn their strength, and use it for the high purposes that true Democra cy suggests. They have been so often outraged and brow-beaten, they have no con fidence in the sfumbering strength they possess, which, * with one manly blow, would crush their opponents, rear aloft the glorious banner of Constitutional Liberty upon the ram- peris of the Radical stronghold, and ring out to all parts of the laud, wel come dicer to the sad hearts of the lov ers of freedom, and “fan again into full flame, that glorious emotion of true Americana—‘the loro of Lilierty pro tected by law.' ” "Then torn to oor cause, tho’ our shadow grow “Veritas." tho parties repairing _ paace speedily united them in wedlock^ At ite con clusion, the fair bride turned to her groom, and with a significant nod, aalutod him tbusly: "Jim, yon are now free, and yon may thank me for releaa- iag yon from Jail, bat 1*11 bsdemod if I'm going to itve with youl ** BOEHM—.
