ftaT The Courier-Journal lias discov
ered a syndicate. Its name is Isaac
Caldwell
•ft- Hon. Ii. H. Stanton has been en
gaged to take editorial charge of the po
litical department of the Louinriltc
Ledger,
England doesn't like to be dis
tanced by the United States in anything.
Hearing of the Westfield and the Ooean
Ware calamities she immediately set
about getting op a calamity of her owd.
The best she could do was the explosion
of a gun cotton factory, and even then
she was able to kill only twenty-two per
sons and wound fifty-seven.
•ft-The Courier-Journal says; “The Boa-
ton Post says ‘ a Georgian is suspected of
cannibalism.' This report springs from
the fact, we presume, that Mr. Stephens
has been trying to chaw us up.” Since
the C.-J. has abandoned “ Bourbon” as a
beverage and taken to “ New England
Rum” straight, its juices have become so
unsavory as to make it very disagreeable
“chawing.”
•ft- Revere, Massachusetts, has started
a museum of relics recovered from the
scene of the late disaster on the Eastern
Railroad. Among the articles collected
so far, is the skin of a man's left hand,
torn from near the wrist on the palm and
from the middle of the fingers on the
outside. The skiu of the fingers was
preserved intact, every nail being left on,
and the appearance of them was fearful
ly suggestive of stfffering. There were
also a lady's left boot, quite small and
badly burned; a new, large sized cloth
boot for the right foot; a braid of black
hair; a linen pocket-handkerchief; a la
dy’s bosom pin of some hard metalic sub
stance, which had evidently been through
fire; a pair of long block ear-drops; a
pair of sleeve-buttons; a pair of drab cot
ton gloves, and a few other minor arti
cles. •
•ft.The “New Departure” papers have
a standing joke (at least they think it a
joke) at the expense of Mr. Stephens.—
It has about made the run of the entire
list, those of them having the tact to do
so, modifying it barely enough to enable
them, by a good stretch of conscience, to
claim it as original This joke brings up
at the tail end of the list—in the Lynch
burg Republican—which paper puts it in
this shape:
One of our cotemporaries recently suggested that
llr. Stephens would probably discontinue the use of
hia initials, if his attention wore called to the p
dicament in which a very alight typographical en
would place him, as an addends to which the Pete
burg rrofrtu very pertinently says: •*We think if
A. H. 8. continues in the course he has so diffusely
followed for tho past month, there will bo no ue
of the typographical error to call public attention
a certain fact."
If there is anything that could lead one
to think it possible that the “slight typo
graphical error” would over bo deemed
on appropriate change in the initials of
Mr. Stephens, it is the fact that all those
known to be asses arc now braying at
him.

BOOK NOTICES.
I.
It is a matter of gratification to notice
the extraordinary number of books for
3011th that are being issued from the
best publishing houses in tho country.—
Hitherto there has been plenty of books
for grown up people, and books enough
for children; but for those who are not
children, and who linvo not arrived at
the ago of mature reflection, there has
not been enough works outside tho ordi
nary run of text-books for schools.—
Book-makers and authors appear to have
arrived at an understundiug of this fact,
and a great deal of mind, and a great
mauy presses are now engaged in evolving
literature for youtlir. Hans Christian
Andersen has had much to do with show
ing authors that talent spent in behalf of
the young is not wasted—not hidden un
der a bushel. No author is more goner
ally known, and his books bnvo yielded
liberal profits to their publishers.
Miss Alcott, in this country, has also
written a most excellent scries of books
for youths, and they have found liberal
sale. It is not strange then, to see lead
ing publishing houses adding such books
to their lists.
James R.Osgood & Co. and RoberisBros,
ers, of Boston; Hurd & Houghton, of
New York, and Claxton, Remson k Haf-
felfinger, of Philadelphia, are leading oil
in this line, and promise quite a number
of books during the coming fall and
ter. The last mentioned firm has already
sent out some of its volumes, mention of
which will be found below.
u.
“Little Gems por Little People”
is a volume of verses for children, which
“children of a larger growth” may read
with pleasure. It is compiled by S. H.
Peirce, who lias shown great care and
taste in his selections. They aro cheery,
bright songs, which the little ones may
love and learn and chirrup. They aro
about things that childrcu can under
stand and are measured to their compre
hension. , £he volume is ueutly gotten
up by Claxton, Remaen k Haffelflnger —
For aale by Pinllipa k Crew.
m.
“Lowly Ways” purports to be “The
Diary of a Poor Young Lady.” It tells
how one whose whole life was filled with
Christian humility, passed quietly and
bravely through a round of onerous du
ties, meekly living and loving, meekly
nerving, and preaching ft first-rate gospel
hy a “daily walk" that was “in the ways
of holiness.” The moral of the story is
irrepro 0 iftb’e. Th° narrative is enticing
enough to lend the mind through it with
out weariness. Claxton, Remain k Ilsf-
felfinger, Philadelphia. Phillips k Crew,
Atlanta.
nr.
“The Kino’s God-Child” is the name
of another volume. This, os well ss
“Lowly Ways,” is translated from the
Germau. The volume contains throe in
teresting stories, froy the first of which
the book takes iu name. The stories
are all well written, and have good and
eucouroging morals calculated to make
the young reader* braver and belter, a»
well as to give pleasure in their perusal
They may be a little <temurncspie, but arc
ntirely dear, in every particular, 60 that
the young mind may readily understand
the stories and the instruction given
through them. Claxton, Remsen k Haf-
fel Anger, Phillips & Crew.
Stw Music.
“ The Jacket of Gray,” by Mrs. C. A.
Ball, of Charleston, 8. C., has been ar
ranged us a song and chorus by Stratford
B. Woodberry, and published by Goo.
A. Oates, of Augusta. Phillips k Crew
have it.
D. P. Foulds, tho well known music
publisher of Louisville, Kentucky, has
just issued “ Forget Thee, My Darling ?”
a Iwdlad by Culixa La vailin', and “ The
Angels Took Our Treasure”—a song aud
chorus—words by Frank Dumont and
music by J. 8. Cox. Both aro very
dever.
