Braisted and others connected with Staten Island ferry. Prof. Mahon went on board tho stea mer Mary Powell, this morning, at West Point, on his way to New York. Noth ing peculiar was noticed in his manner. About an hour after going on board he jumped from the steamer toward of the wheel into the rivtr. He was undoubte dly struck by the wheel, as his body did not come to the surface. Boats were lowered and effort* made to Have him without 8UCCCH8. Ilia act was undoubte dly deliberate, au coat and overshoes were found in the vicinity where he made the fatal jump. Ho went on board the steamer with his housekeeper, who seem ed to have suspicio i that the old gentle man was in trouble. He said to her, don’t follow me about. He succeeded in getting away from her nml disappeared. He was seen to make the fatal leap by one of the pilots who gave the alarm. Professor Mahon was a nuu about 70 years old, and apparently lialc and hearty. A search will l»e made at once to recover the body. A preliminary meeting of about two hundred of Comptroller Connolly’s friends was held this evening in a room at the corner of Dame aud Centre street, to prepare for a public demonstration in | his favor. Moses Daly was appointed Chairman. The speakers wero ex-coro ncr Cover, and Peter McCorry of the Irish People, newspaper, both of whom expressed faith in tho integrity of Con nolly. They blamed Judgo Barnard for making distinction botween defendants. They declared that all tho defendants ought to stand shoulder to shoulder.— Resolutions wero passed to the effect that tho singling out of tho Comptroller fora sacrifice was tho result of a conspiracy of tricky members. The Bake Shore dividends will be olli- cially announced to seek the exchange Monday. The terms of dividends is for ty per cent., or iu other words, a division of fourteen millions among stockholders. The company makes up the 665 percent paid on the receipt on new stock, and reserves tho right to call up 33i percent in cash. When this is all paid the script will l>e made full paid stock. The cash is to be colled up in installments, aud only as tho company needs the money. Specie shipment over a quarter of a million. Ex-Judge Stewart, a criminal lawyer, is dead, of typhoid fever. A joint committee of citizens and su pervisors report no over issue of city or county bonus, and that the debt was cor rectly stated iu August at seventy-one and three-quarter millions. The sub-committee for investigation of details will report next week. The injunction don’t clog municipal affairs, there being twelve millions free in the treasury. The World says it is, of course, utterly iinpc lible thut Comp troller Connolly should remain in the office how. His retirement is merely a question of an hour's time, perhaps, pos sibly of days, certainly not of weeks. If he does not resign now, the Mayor can not avoid impeaching him, and tho stig ma affixed to his administration by Judge Barnard foreshadows the sentence that would inevitably be passed on him by the Court of Common Pleas. If he is foolhardy enough to brave a trial, he has no reason to expect the Court of Common Pleas would treat him with more tenderness than Judge Bar nard. Wc are confident he will not brave such a trial, and we hope to hear of his resignation in the courso of the day. . Another meeting of tho committee of seventy was held at the Chamber of Com merce yesterday. The only business of consequenco was tbe appointment of a committee to draft an address to the peo ple of the State advising them of the lie comity of a new city charter. Governor Hoffman had a private inter view with Hall and Connolly to iay.J The fricnds|of Connolly proposo a mass meeting to protest against the action to wards Connolly by the other Tammany chieftains. v l The injunction against tho New York authorities cannot be dissolved until the general term in December.
