A Visit U Rout ailsout—Tho Aon- Coot lls|lt| ost is BirfllfOl Sor- At an early hour Sunday morning coaid be seen hacks, carriages, baggies and vehicles of every description hurry ing out Whitehall street in the direction of Mount Gilead, which is distant some eight or nine miles from the city on tho Campbelton road. ■This is an old and noted camp ground, where annually are held those seasons of religions services for which it has been famous for thirty- six years past. It was first established in 1834, and every year since, with the exception, perhaps, of two or three yean during tho war, has this spot witnessed similar scenes to that of Sunday. The long years ago of which we epeak this place was selected by tho Holbrooks, the Greens, the if With - the Wilsons, and others, and dedicated to the service of the Almighty. Many of the patriarchs have been gathered nnto their fathers, while those who remain “keep their lamps trimmed and burning,'’ ever ready to answer tbesomoas, “come up higher.” Bat the numerous descendants of this neighborhood of veterans have stepped in and taken their fathers' places, and these annnal reunions liave lost none of their pristine pleasures. Between two sml three thousand per sons were on the grounds Sunday. The city was largely represented, but by far the larger proportion of the assemblage was composed of good, honest farmers, with their wives and children, and who had brought a sufficient supply of the good things of life to feed everybody who might attend. „ . The singing was the good old camp meeting style, where all joined in with an earnestness and devotion only witnes sed on occasions of this kind. The choir was led by onr old friend Jyhntion, of the Fairlmm /Sentinel, and his fine baritone notes reached out into the shady surroun dings in a richness trnly exbilirating.— The ltev. Mr. Potter preached an able and lengthy discourse, which was listened throughout with profound reverence and interest An intermission for dinner was an nounced, and then the gennino hospital ity of those good people copped out mot conspicuously. This closed the testimony, and the magistrate, to summing it up, remarked that not only had the prosecution failed to establish the charges, but stogularlv failed to prove even an attempt at swind ling and cheating, and therefore released the prisoner unconditionally. He endeavored to shoot his intended victim, but the cap only exploded, and the charge missed fire. O'Shields rushed to take him, when Coppege turned and fired at him without effect. This brave and deter mined man did not halt, bat re-doubled his vigor, seeing which Coppege tamed and ran in the direction of the old tan-yard to the Walton Spring Branch, eagerly panned. TRIAD OF A. L. HARRIS. Testimony of Several WlIncNci. At 10 o'clock yesterday morning, A. L. Harris, late Master of Trauaportation of the Western A Atlantic ltiuiroad, was arraigned before Justice Butt on a charge, preferred by G. W. Lee, of Ixing a common cheat and swiudler. Col. Lee swears that ho and Harris aud La Fontaine were interested in a patent for a railroad switch, and that Harris proposed to buy out Lee’s interest for #1,000, and did buy said interest, giving him (Lee) #500 in money and* lathe and some iron in payment of the residue, and that the two latter articles i were the prop erly of the State of Georgia. In the afternoon Mr. Hutchins testified that he was at that time an employee of tho State Hoad, and that he was ordered by Harris to let Lee have enough iron to put'dowu a switch, end did so. Did not know what the iron was worth. He never heard Harris and Lee consulting about the switch. The iron was worked up iu the State Rood shop, and the S aitoh was put down iu the yard of the engine house. Did not know of* any trade between these gentlemen iu regard to the switch. Mr. Lc Fontaine was one of the in terested, ]>artic* to the [latent, and sold his interest to Harris for #250 iu cash aud took his note for the balance. The note remains uucancelled. Did not hear Harris say he hod bought Lee's iuterest He had seen three of the switches down, one nt (.'ortersvillo, one at tho Fair 11 rounds and one in the State Road Shop. Ho heard Leo and Harris talking about its superiority over other switches, Ac. Ho bad tiled to sell his interest to Var ney Gaskill before he sold to Harris. Tho wituess lives at Cutonvillc and heard that somo one had come np and claimed the lathe as the property of the State. He thought the lathe was worth about #150. He did not know at the timo that Harris had sold tho twitch to tho State ltoad. Foster HlodgntkAeatilled that he tho model of the siftch, aud remarked to Home and others at the time that it was of no account, but as it was a South ern invention, by Southern men, he felt it his his duty to encourage it iu every le gitimate way, and ordered two or three to bo put down asa titoto its merits, aud fur nished the irou for the purpose. After seeing it tried he bought the right from Harris for the Slate ltoad, giving him 820 per mile far the eutire length of the read, which is 138 miles, and the amount was #2,700. This was about the lost of Ootober, 1870. The contract is in writ ing and iu thonpesetauon of witness.— The one in the Wiop bad been in use three or four months before he made the imrchasc. Harris was paid iu December, 1870. The Treasurer's book will show tho exact date. There wns no under- standing beforehand that he would pur chase it. Does not recollect whether tho trade was made before Uio act leasing the road was presed or nok He never grant ed permission ta arexMwtouao tho lathe.
