The Keirs of Thursday lias the follow ing items: A special dispatch from Prof. Agassiz states that the tidal wave has broke down on the road, and will not be here until some time in November. He wishes us to pacify the people until it comes. It was feared by many that the storms which have prevailed during the past month along our coast and inundated the rice fields, had nearly destroyed the crop. It appears, however, from the receipts by the steamer San Antonio, whioh arrived hero yesierday, that the new crop along the Satilla river, promises a very fair yield. The steamer brought 1,000 bush els. Mr. S. P. Hamilton, of Savannah, and Messrs. Sharp & Floyd of this city, are the only bidders for the contract for furnishing premiums to the Savaunah Fair. Tliev are un der command of a Prussian officer, who has made a very favorable impression on the citizens. The commandant seems to think that lie will bo kept in the county for several months. What It Costs to Run a Radical Government—What it I'sed to Cost to Run a Democratic Gov ernment—.The Wall Street Brokers Attempt a Corner in Gold—The Financial Policy of the Government—Who is that Georgia Lawyer 1 Special Correspondence of the Atlauta Sun. Washington, D. 0., Sept 15, 1871. The National Democratic Committee, to-day, issued a brief tabular statement of GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURES UNDER GRANT compared with Democratic Administra tions. The Lincoln Admistration is omitted in the comparison, because it had the expenses of the war. Tlio cost per capita, exclusive of interest on the public debt, acoordiug to tho Pierce Adminis tration, was one dollar auu ninety-six cents. According to Buchanan’s Admin istration two dollars and nineteen cents, and according to Grant’s four dollars and seventy-six cents. Including tho prin cipal and interest on the public debt, the amount per head, iu a population of forty millions, is, under Grant, ten dollars and twenty-eight cents. Tho figures further show that Grant pends per year, one hundred and ninety millions, seven hundred and ninety-six thousand, three hundred and fifty-five dol lars, exclusive of principal and interest on tho public debt, being more than Polk, Van Buren, Pierce and Buchanan spent in four years. Tho total amount of taxes collected for tho last fiscal year is placed at FOUR HUNDRED AND ELEVEN MILLIONS, TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS! These tables are all compiled from of ficial reports, submitted to and printed by Congress. Tho latest attempt of certain Wall street Brokers to create “corner” in gold, has been dreaded for some time, because of tho limited quantity of gold on the market, und the small nmount to bo sold by the government this mouth. It has been deemed singular that the gold premium has steadily advanced since the consummation of the live per cent, loan negotiation, an event which, jus de monstrating the improvement (so-called' of the public credit, should have lowered the premium on gold. The rise, how ever, is though to be explained by the fact, that while the New York city banks hold $12,000,000 of specie, and the wants for customs duties are at the rate of$17,- 500,000 per month, tho Secretary of the Treasury has fixed his sales of coin for September at the unexpectedly low figure Insurance Company, General W. 8. The, e proper explanation is, however, that the business men of tho country have no faith in the financial policy of the govern ment. They look upon Mr. Boutwell as a great financial fraud, (only equalled by the O. O. D. Governor of Georgia.) For instance, in tho matter of the loan, in funding the debt at a lower rate of in terest, which Mr. Boutwell urged so strenuously upon Congress, he has sig nally failed. Out of the fifteen hundred millions to be funded, only two hundred millions of tho five percents have been token ; if, indeed, it can be said that tho amount in the hands of these agents (the syndicates) lias really been taken, which great many people profess to doubt. It is is believed that syndicates” may yet slip up in their efforts to place a It is now very positively asserted that )lai' the three soldiers who came back with Bug Pierce as a guard last Friday did not belong to the United States Army, but were discharged men, whom Fierce hired to act ns protectors. The Telegraph of tho 21st has the ap- pendod items : Mr. John Marr, late owner of tho cele brated horse Biamark, has returned from New York. He sold his horso to Mr. Smith, the owner of Goldsmith’s Maid, for $17,000. Whilst on the training track ho mado tlio time in 2:24. Mr. Marr gave $250 for this horse, and won enough, on him to fully pay the purchase Mggm and all expenses—or in other wokSs krbM netted $17,000 cool cash on hit Httle investment. On Tuesday morning last, a difficulty oocurrod in the suburbs of this city be tween a Mr. Williams and bis son-in-law, Doc. Ivey, which resulted in the shoot ing of the former by the latter. The af fair grew out of the destruction of some of Ivey’s property by Williams, and when Ivey remonstrated, Williams assailed him with an ax. Ivey theu ran into his house and getting his gun (a small cuibine) shot his asssilsnt, the ball entering the fleshy part of the thigh, indicting a severe but pot fatal wound. Ivey is justified by those who witnessed the affair. A Fort Valley correspondent of the Telegraph writes: We have had rain almost continually for the last four weeks. The cotton cau- not grow as we have no sunshine. The bolls are rotting by thousands, and il this weather should continue much Ion ger the oottou crop will be a failure.— portion of the two hundred millions, for it is not bolievod that tucy have made a bona fide purchase of the bonds. The whole “ Syndicate” business is denounced A UIOANTIO JOB for the benefit of the Treasury ring of bankers and speculators, and, as a conse quence the action of tho Secretary in employing these ..agents to disposo of a loan which the Department ought to hove been quite as able to place without additional cost- lias destroyed, or seri ously impaired, tho confidence of all eminent Bankers in tho financial ability of Mr. Boutwell—and the policy of the Administration in backing him up. THE IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCE of all this is that the speculators seize upon every opportunity to control the market, in tho belief that they will bo able to put tho prices to auy extent their greed may dictate. It is to be hoped that every effort will bo mado to find out tho name of THE GEORGIA LAWYER who holds a certified claim against a cer tain Georgia railroad (supposed to be the State Uoad) for legal fees, amounting to one hundred thousand dollars.
