Robert Anderson receives forty-two hun
dred dollars per annum from the United
States—half pay as a retired Brigadier.

General Young, of Georgia, is here

Democratic Committee. He expresses
the opinion that the Democrat* will sweep

Heney Howard, agent for British
Claims, has issued a notice requesting
the subjects of Great Britain to send to
him the particulars r of the claims they
may have upon the United States Gov
ernment, arising out of the acts commit
ted against tlier persons or property dur
ing the war. The claims must be pre
sented within six months from the 26th
September last.

The highest barometer continues os
ou Monday afternoon in the South At
lantic StateH; but the pressure has fallen
very generally east of the Rocky Moun
tains. The area of low barometer w hich
has been moving very slowly along the
Texas Coast is now off tho mouth of the
Mississippi ltiver. Rain has been re
ported from Arkansas, but is now con
fined to southern Louisiana and Ala., with
brisk northeast winds. Southeast winds,
with parliallv cloudy weather, prevail in
lower Florida. The low barometer on
Lake Huron lias moved eastward, ex
tending its influence rapidly over the
middle and eastern States. Cloudy and
threatening weather prevails on tho east
Atlantic Coast, and a dry smoky atmos
phero extend from Lake Erie and Vir
ginia westward. The pressure has fallen
decidedly at the Rocky Mountaiu sta
tions,
rrabablliliea.
The barometer will probably coutinue
to fall in the Southern and Gulf States,
and the rain storm now prevailing thcie
extends into Georgia. Rain is also prob
able during Wednesday in the Carolinas.
Continued westerly winds, with hnzy
weather, on the lakes.

San Francisco, October 3.—The Su
perintendent of the mint notifies a num-
>er of old Republican employees that, in
consequence of political pressure, he must
dispense with their services. Their suc
cessors, it is supposed, will be those who
favor a continuation of the preseut ad
ministration.

Two of tho convicts that escaped from

The heat is intense throughout Cali
fornia. Many sun-strokes have occurred.
The wheat market is excited.
Shipments of tea overland during the
month ot September amounted to nearly
4,000.000 pounds.
The vintage Ima commenced. The
yield will be about 8,000,000 of gallons,
exclusive of brandy.
KENTUCKY.
Louisville, Obtober 3.—At a balloon
ascension to-day tbo balloon broke, pre
maturely, from tho fastenings. Two men
sprung from the car but only caught the
ropes and were carried off. One fell
thirty feet, the other, Professor Wildurn,
clung to the rope until the balloon at
tained the height of a mile when became
whirling to the earth. As he approached
the earth he was feet foremost, he spread
out horizontally, doubled up, turned
over, and thou straightened out with his
head downwards. As ho struck tho earth
he fell upon his head and back. His
head was mashed into an indistinguisha
ble mass, and his body was bruised and
crushed horribly. His body mado an in
dentation in the ground eight inches
deep, and it rebounded four feet from
where it struck. Wilburn’s young wife
and little daughter were on the ground
and witnessed the terrible affair.
