Governor Bullock Spending Money* With thi Lawtzbs.—It is th* duty of the Attorney General to fire legal counsel upon all questions when called upon by tha Oovemor, and to represent the State In sni test law, where the State is sporty. For this aerv;j.f the law prescribes that be shall receive a ealary of two thousand dollars, and that be shall re ceive no other compensation as Attorney General. In any case, before any Court, where the Attorney General really needs help, theGovernor is authorized to employ assistant counsel, aud pay a reasonable fee out of tiio contingent fund. Bullock, however, has spent not toss than $38,600 in fees tc -awyers— most of it in coses where not even the services of ths Law Officer of ths State was necessary. He has gone outside to lawyers—sometimes to men of dis tinguished ability—and st other times to those not distinguished, sad where there wss no need of it whatever. Ouo single lawyer has drawn over $8,000 from the Treasury for thi* kind of servioe, while a number have drawn very large amounts, ranging from $500 to $1,600. Not a fourth of this money was properly or nec essarily spent. In almost every single case it was equivalent to throwing the money In the fire, so for as any benefit to the State was derived. To illustrate: A portion of the stockholders of the Macon aud Western Railroad, and other parties, sued out an Injunction against the officers of that company, which was lately tried in Macon, to pre vent the consummation of the lease to the Central Railroad. Bullock empfciyed some four or flvs law yers to represent the State iu that caao, in order to prevent the lease. Gen. Phillips, of Marietta, Col. Bacon, of Macon, Anderson A Lanier (Clifford An derson, t Chalrman of the State Democratic Executive Committee), of Macou, and B. B. Hinton, of Colum bus, wc believe, were employed by Bullock for this very useless business. Why should tho State of Georgia oppose that lease T What Interest could the State government have in it either way T And for this very needless service Bullock has agreed to pay them $1,260 each—so wo hear. This amounts to $4,000 of the people's money thrown sway by the reckless creature who sits iu the Governor's chair. Cau auy one tell us the object of Bullock in thus scattering the State's resources with s lavish hand, where they are not needed and cannot do any good 7 Why has be been advertising his proclamations heavy—publishing them in nearly every paper in the State 7 Has he expected to secure the influence aud support ot men sad papers who, otherwise, would not have been In his favor 7 It this Is hie calcula tion, we are sure be has reckoned without his host. Aud these immense fees to lawyers who have been paid at the State Treasury are only a part of what was spent In the same way by Bullock end Blodgett, for similar needless, pretended services in connection with tho Western and Atlantic Railroad. Tho Gov ernor made a contract with Col. Farrow to discharge the duties of attorney of the Western end Atlantic Railroad, at a salary of $3,600 per year, and then called on other lawyers for opinions on tbe merits of claims against tbo road—sometimes paying such attorneys as much as twenty-five per cent of the amount of a claim for an opluion ou Its merits. Sometimes as much a« $1,000 was paid for such opiuiou. The firm of Hopkins A Brown, of this city, was paid a fee of $1,000 for an opinion in the Dobbins-Goakill-Blodgeit cotton case. These feos were often paid attorneys without even presenting the case to tho Attorney General for investigation. Locol and Dualncsw Notloca. “Adkyandzb H.
