A Strange Story.
To the editor of the North Carolinian
The following statement was given me
while ou my trip to this place Ire tlie
gentleman who sigus his name. It is s
strange story indeed; but the gentleman
who told me of it, and wrote oat the ao-
oonnt, seemed intelligent and truthful,
and also appeared firmly and solemnly
impressed with the truth of the incidents.
I offer it to you, and trust you will pub
lish it os a matter of courtesy. I know
not how to believe it, but tuo man who
told the story seemed so earnest and up
right about the matter, that I felt oou-
strained to receive his testimony and
present it to you for publication.
Respectfully, Wfe H. Lyon.
About three year* since, a man np
peered to me, (John Scott, of Hartford
county, N. C„) by the name of Nathan
Beale, who was certainly killed at tbo
seven days' light around Richmond! I
sew him about three days after ho was
killed; Baw him buried, and saw the
wound, wbioh was by a musket ball, in

This I swear as an absolute fact. And
now I tell what has since appeared
to me and several others, aud to w hich I
will also take oath. About three years
since at Franklin Depot, on the Seaboard
Road, X, John Scott, and W. E. Rauls,
S. E. Beale, cousin to deceased, and A.
M. Gardiner, of Southampton county,
rginia, did then and there see and I
>ke to tbe same Nathan Beale. Aud
when we came to him I said, “Is no
this Nathan Beale?” and ho replied, "It
is." I said, “where have you been ?'
He answered, “I am dead,” and then I
replied, “where are you going?" He
said, “That is for me to know.” These
were tbe words spoken. He walked off.
I have not seen him since. This can be
sworn to by all tbe above men.
Now I leave to tbe world and spiritual-
Is to answer what was, what is, and
what does it mean ? Strange os this
story may appear to those who may read,
yet I am willing, and so are the others, to
take oath to the above facts, before any
honorable magistrate. I hereby sign my
nun-, and acknowledge myself as a truth
ful, believing and sincere man, with uo
disposition to deceive or impose upon a
reading public. The deceased and my
self were boys together; and I now con
clude by eolemnly swearing to the above
tacts.

ProLable Future *f tbe Cottou
Market.
The range of prices for cotton rontin
ue to rule unusually low, considering the
position of the staple and the prospects
of supplies in the future. The quota
tions are not now so high as one month
since, by |c. or more, though there lias
been no material improvement in the
crops, snd the supply of American
pressing ru tbo market has not been
TGverpool, the great authority in the
cotton market, is just now loaded with
East India cotton of last year’s crop, aud
and prices there arc depressed in conse
quence. The low quotations transmitted
from Liverpool to every quarter of the
globe, exercises a controlling influence
upon prices iu other markets, aud the
staple therefore continues to sell at rates
which may be considered ns dispropor-
tfor Italy low in view of tbo present pruu-
pecta of supply and demand.
As we have said before, the supply of
East India cotton offered in the Liver
pool and Continental markets at this
season of tho year, naturally exercises a
bad effect upon the American staple.
This is more strictly true this season, for
spinners had provided lilwral stocks of
American cotton to run in with the poor
er grades, and are, therefore; more inde
pendent than for years past.
This depressing cans*', however, is but
temporary, and will be removed at nu
early data, when cottons from this aide
of tbe Atlantic will take their true poai-
tion, and the circumstance* certainly
warrant much higher figures than those
which now prevail. Tne crop does not
promise to exceed 8,000,000 boles, though
a lata frost might enable the planters to
save more. ... . , ,,
On fie other hand, advices from India
are I of an eaoournging character by
any it ns. The low range of prieeo lest
season naturally deterred the ryots from
extending the acreage under cotton, and
the planting season proved very unpropi-
tious. Tbe British Commission reports
that the weather after the spring months
proved too wet for planting in tl.u
central provinces and Berari, and ail
the seed has been pat in the groin
there has been entirely too much di.>
weather, and in many sections vegetation
is bemg burned up.
When these tacts are taken into consid
eration and allowance is made tor the in
creased consumptive power of Europe
this year, the position of tbs market sp-
peara very strong, and the conclusion is
forced upon ns that those engaged in the
cotton trade will have the advantage this
rereson of operating upon a rising ma. ket
instead of s falling one.
