Pnblic Printer.
Last night a caucoa of a portion of tho
Democrat* ot tho Legislature was held
to nominate a candidate for Publio Prin
ter. I wae not present, and, in view of
the action of the Senate yoaterday on
the qaettiun of the Publio Printing, I
did'not anppoee any nomination would
be made. 1 learn that Mr. Hemphill, of
this city, representing a combination of
himaeif with Mr. J. W. Burke, of Macon,
was proposed as a candidate, and that
my name, also, was presented ; and that
the vote for Hemphill and Burke was 74,
end tor myself 30.
1 am informed that many Democrats
did not attend—not expecting a nomina
tion to be made—end that a number who
were preeent protested against a nomina
tion, in view of the pending action
on the Senate bill, and retired.
As it was, thoro wore only 104 votes in
all cast—looking about 70 of the foil
Democratic strength in tho Legislature.
It ia duo to myself to state that I have
not mingled with the members of the
Legislature, but liavo remained closely
engngod in my ofllco; and havo not,
at any time, done moro than was
stated in a circular on Tnesday
last, to which my name was at
tached, whioh was, a willingness to per
form the work at a fair prioe, if the Leg
islature should think fit freely to give it
to Thb Sub Publishing Company; but I
have earnestly urged, in tho columns of
Thb Sub, b redaction of tho compensa
tion now allowed by law, whether the
work should be given to me or not; and I
do hope something will yet be doue to
aoouro this end.
I am Informed that ono printer, in this
«lty, made one hundred andffly dollar! 4»
otu tesat, setting type on the publio
printing, when the same work oould have
been done for heenty-one dollars—the
lattor figure being the regular weekly
wages ot a printer in this oity. The
peasant law allows the Public Printer 80
percent, on the “ooet" of the work.—
Tbii 30 por cent, on $150 made tho State
pay 8195 for that week's work, and pul
$45 clear profit into the pocket of the
Publio Printer; whoroas, if the type
setting had oust only $31, the profit on
it would have been only (6 30, and the
whole oost to the State 837 30—which is
exorbitant in itself; but the same coat
ing $195 to the Stato, shows how the
pmsat law can bo abused. 1 trust it
will be amended.
It matters but little who performs the
work, if the people be not unduly bled
to pey for it. I hove put Thb Sub upon
reoord as against all exorbitant compen
sating » well aa abuse.

Got. Jenkins raised temporary loans
in 1805 and 1860, and in the latter year
(I860) negotiated a loan of three millions
of dollars in currency Ixmds—all “for
the purpose of roieiug funds to meet ap
propriations made, and to bo made, and
for the repairs and equipment of the
Western and Atlantic BaiJroad, and tho
renewal of bonds now dqg, and interest
tbereoD, and bonds falling due." The
total commissions paid by him for nego
tiating theee loans was $1,110 Cl.
The aot authorising the issue of these
bonds gave Gov. Jenkins authority "to
employ an agent, or agents, to visit suoh
places as he may direct, and negotiate
upon anch terms aa the Governor may
instruct".
We have quoted the language of the
act, and that of the expenditure os stated
ia the account. Tho commissions for
negotiating the entire three millions und
raising the temporary loans, being only
$1,110 61, while the commissions charged
by Clews A Co., for selling one million
six hundred and fifty thousand dollars,
and for paying off a small amount of
Stato bonds falling dne, and the interest
thereon, amount* to the enormous sum
of Ninelydhree Thousand Steen Hundred
and Forty-nine Dollars t
Again, Gov. Jenkins sold seven per
cent, currency bonds at 95 cents—tho
ooupons payable semi-annually in curren
cy—this, when the current rates of in
terest in ordinary transactions were high
er than now.
The bonds sold by Clews A Co., were
seven per cent. goUl bonds, with quar
terly gold coupons, and were sold for only
86|—so Mr. Clews reports.
Gov. Jenkins' account for advertising,
in order to effect the sulo of the three
millions of titato bonds, was only $931,
while Clews A Co. have charged 814,320
for selling a little over a million and a
hall, and for advertising for tho other
purposes named.

A TOUCBUO BCBKB
wss enacted before His Honor yesterday

hell-brewed whisky, had met with a
profligate woman, who, uuder pretense
of seeking shelter from the storm, sought

wicked design .of violating tbe oonjugel
sanctity of their humble home. The
young men oouseuted. His young, lov

As a circus man John Bobinson has
not an equal. Such an exhibition was
never secu iu Atlanta as his was yester
day. It was superb in every particular.
His canvass oovt-red '.he greater portion
of an aero of ground. His zoological col
lection was tho largest sud best ever ex
hibited here. His sea lions were great
cariosities. No one believed that such
animals would be exhibited, sod every
body was surprised to sec four wonderful
specimens of, tho animal oreation. He
has a zebra also—a beautiful animal-
four magnificent lions, a hyena, and
many other admirable specimens. This
department aloue is a “big show,’’ and
fully worth tho money.
Iu the arenia department, we Hud au
agreeable variation ot the regular old
feata of tho ring, and all was good. He
has four splendid olowus, flue vaulters
and gyinuosts, a troupe of trained dogs,
a gang of Kuklux, that almost made one
listen tor a proclamation ot martial law,
and any amount ot other novelties that
wero pleasing and attractive. It is a big
show—a huge show—a magnificent show
—such s show as will never be seen in
Atlanta till John Bobinson comes along
again.
Performances will bo givcnlthis after
