The House, though a very re-oonsid- ruble body, managed to get .through with yeeterd- > routine uithoot a aingle mo tion to w iflidei-. Thta ii ouch an un usual occurrence that it becomes note worthy. Conley has poeriMy diaeorered by this time that bis veto If not worth hall the paper it la writtefi o#. The Legiala ture,—avoiding, however all appearanoe rhia veto as easily aa a crow can Cyorer housetop. The latest effort of old Veto ad interim, was in opposition to the bill regulating the pay of offlonaand bets of the Asaembly. Not another soul in Christendom was affected by the bill, while the eomsaoe Treaanryof hundred thoueead people—tax-payers— was benefitted materially by ii But his Aoeidency disapproved it because it Was retroactive, and because a aeaall apse ala tire minority—eon stating mainly of Badicals, who have not relinquished their oharaoteriatio cupidi ty—were affected by it against their will. It is singular how these Badicals go for the dollar and dimes. They vote themselves hig pay as coolly aa though their services were worth it, and it oul rages their virtue to be mulcted of it by the vote of an honest majority. The As sembly has just aa much right,.to vote money into the Treasury as it hss to vote money out at it. II s majority of the members say seven dollars a day, from the bagianing of the term, is enough, it ii lawful for them to aey so, Conley to the contrary, notwithstanding. But ad interim has another objeotion to the bill. Hit lint objeotion is that the majority has no right to vote the minority oat of two dollars day. That’s virtuous. But his virtue oonoeatrates in a fine point, when he announces that he objects again, became the redaction is not large enough. He thinks it a shame that the redaction in per diem should not exceed “the paltry sum of two doitare,* but un happily he forgot that the aggregate is shoot five hundred dollars a day, amount ing to a retrenchment of more than fif teen thousand dollars for the time that the Assembly has already been in session. This is a snog little am, and will fill a smart little hole made in the Stete ex chequer by jladiaal fraud end corrup tion. The bill wee passed over the veto by the foil legal majority. The Benate concurred in the House reeoloUan inviting Genarel Lewis, the State School Commissioner, to resign.— That oAoer will hardly decline to aoespt the invitation so cordially extended. MT The Sunday Herald, published in Washington, prints the following re sume of an interview that one of its report ers had with Speaker Blaine : " Mr. Blaine’s reference to Grant's ignorance, in a literary point of view, will be pub lished in full. Our reporter asked Ur. Blaine what his opinion was as to Giant’s intellectual capacity. To this inquiry Ur. Blaine responded tbuthe knew Grant well personally; bo often met him in ev- eiy-day business, as he passed and re passed the White House, and occasion ally stopped to have a pleasant chat with him. ‘Great,’ said Ur. Blaine, ‘is a very clever fellow, bat ho is very ignorant.— Why, lie don’t know anything about publio affairs; he don't read the newspa pers, and lias not the average informs tion in contemporaneous events. Why, he told mb himself that he never reed a ’ “Hare our reporter gave a smile of incredulity. Tee,' oontianed Blaine, he actually told me he never reed a book. Yon remember just after he was elected President, Hooper and a lot of other fel lows gel up a subscription to furnish Gnat with anew library. Grant told «that be had just reoeived a letter from Hooper, saying that they hnd selected the books for the library with the exoeption of those relating to military matters.— They supposed he had most of these, bat if there were any rare books they would supply them. Grant said he re plied thet he had never in all his life read on the art of war.'” SUN-8TROKE8. t&~ The 8L Louis SepMican finds it impossible to “play ’possum" any longer while such lines as the following aro jingling in its brain: I've caught • cold— I don’t knowhow; I no •*—chui—«!” When I k-chow t And when I try. r ’T* y **k-d •W* De Castro is humbugging Selma with the champion poor show. zrt_ Louisville bee given birth to e “school-book ring.” Next 09- Will Grant ever go down to his tory es Ulysses the Peeoe-makert M- “The Ghenbio Klimpton” is a fancy with the Columbus Phoenix. The pnblic probably bears in mind the gram seandsl that some months ago was circulated through the paper*, with which the names of Rev. J. L. Pieroe end a lady from Carters* ills were unen- visbly connected. The scandal was so great, and bom so heavily upon not only the ministerial, but the moral character ef Ur. Pieroe, that it became necessary for the Conference, to which he belonged, to give the matter a moot inquisitorial examination. When Conference met in Athens last week one of the first seta of the body wee to sommittee for the investigation of the matter. The oommittee was com posed of the following ministers: At- minins Wright, chairman; H. H. Parka, L. J. Davies, F. A Kimball, A G. Hay- good, A M. Thigpen, G. Y. Smith, J. H. Grogan, J. M. Dickey, M. Calloway, D. J. Hyrick, 3. Lewis, Jr.; P. A Heard, W. P. Fort. A better, ora more discreet oommittee, could scaroely have been seleeted from the Conference. They are pious, dent men, who would not suffer them selves to be biased by influences other than facts, and men who would not shrink from the sternest doty that oonld be brought before them. Before this tribunal the Rev. J. L. Pieroe was brought for an examination of the charges against him. His trial occupied five entire days—three sittings of ths committee being held each day.— The testimony was taken in writing, and oovemd three handled pages of cep pa per. Every witness wee subjected to the most thorough and rigid examination. Witnesses pro and oon were examined with like rigor. There was no par tiality— no discrimination—no favors shown, but an obvious determination to arrive at the exact truth iu the case. What points were divulged by the tes timony it is not necessary to state. It is sufficient for the publio to know that after a most patient and exhaustive hear ing, the judgment of the oommittee was that Ur. Pieroe was not guilty of the charges that hod been made against him. The husband of the lady involved, who was present daring the examination, at i said Ur. Ptetoe had bad a fair and impartial trial. Here let the matter end forever. He says the Son thorn States snffer greatly in their interest tor want of grass es, in the use of which, their productions would be greatly Increased, by rendering a rotation in crops u sparer rr.
