Washington, December 11.—The case
of Ward vs. the Stato of Maryland, in
error from the (Supreme Court ol Mary
land, was up to-day. Iu tliis case toe
plaintiff in error was indicted in thoSfato
Court for violation of tlie Statute against
sales by sample by noh-readenta without
liccuee, aud tha Court uflirmud too right
of tho State to exaot the license. This court
holds that the Statute of Maryland Is a
iplkiion of that clause of the Constitu
tion whioh guarantees to tho ateiaeaa of
each State all the righta, privjtegcu, he.,
of the citizens of tho several States, and
that it is, therefore void. Bm th’c viett
ia taken that it is not a violatibn of the
oommercial chaos of the Constitution if
the tax is equally laid on rcsidwts and
non-residents. Mr. Justice Clifford de
livered the opinion o[ the Court Mr.
Justice Bradley concurred in tho opinion
as to the first breutoh of the decision;
but dissented, as to the aeoo«d, hokling
