The claimants'*'contended that the Conmany by withdrawing its advances from Alabama during the war, prevented a good man’s paying his premiums.— Judge Blackford decreed for the claim ants with costs. The Company to be credited for the unpai ’ annual payments. New Yoke, December 22.—The Grand Jury examined Mayor Hall to-day. Sickles expects to return to Spain iu a month or six weeks. Ho says he brought important matters for tho Government touebiug Spain and Cuba. CALIFORNIA. San Fbancisco, De^mber 22.—Heavy rains and high winds prevail throughout the State. The merchants will lose heavilt by the deluy in the delivery of their Christmas goods from the East, and threaten to sue the Union Pacific Road. There was a full Cabipet to-day except Robeson. The Departments close at noon to-mor row until Tuesday. Reporters arrived here from Annapo lis, to spend the vacation of the Court, express the opinion lively that the pros ecution has failed to make a ca.se against Mrs. Wharton. Her conviction is high ly improbable. Mctereologftcal. Increasing easterly winds, with rising tendency, is probable for Saturday throughout tho Atlantic States, the snow being followed by rain in tne Middle States. An area of low barometer will pass northeast Saturday over Missouri ’and Indiana, with southerly winds and min tho Gulf States and Ohio Valley. Scott, with a view of preventing a postpone ment of the vote~on impeachment, sent a*meflBage to .the Legislature this room ing covering a proclamation convening that body in extraordinary session at noon to-morrow. The Governor’s sup porters then pressed a vote on a motion to strike out the resolving clause of the impeachment resolution** The motion was finally carried, at one o'clock, by yeas G3; nays 32. This defeats the impeacbweut. Then came another proc lamation from the Governor revoking the proclamation issued a few hoars previous, and tho Legislature, at 3 o’clock, in Dur- suanco of a concurrent resolution, passed last week, adjourned until Janua ry 5th. * In the Ku-Klux triul Mr. Chamberlain closed the argument for the prosecution iu the case of Whitesides and Mitchell. Owing to the limited supply, wood has cost at St. Paul from $10 to $12 per cord for rnanv years past—an enormous ex pense when it came to heating a whole oily. Now, however, tho railroads are taking a hand in it, and a ton of the best Ohio coal, from Duluth, costs little or no more than a cord of wood. As a natu ral consequence, the whole community are shedding their ancient gear for con suming wood, and the rush for coal stoves is something marvellous to behold.
