r* fjelt vefy'little alarmed- I lifted my heart ant i voice lo God in prayer, anil found him present to deliver in a try* *ng moment. Though my body was an the storm, my soul had a calm and (peace within. 1 was confined to my for two weeks afterwards, but two happier weeks i have never 4|ived. I felt no disposition to raur- 'fmur foe one, moment, for I saw the hand, of God wj?s iu it, and confidently fcelioved that all would work for f ood., I arrived in my station Dec. iib, and have been enabled to preach twice on Sabbath, and one or fwo night8 in the we ek. We have to record tvu? occurrence "bf a dreadful accident wsiich happen ed yesterday on the line af the Balti more and Ohio Rail Road. T he cor- joner, Lambert Thomas, Esq. was called to the tenth section of the Road, for the purpose of holding an inquest over the bodies of Patrick Hackett, Edward McCreary, Thomas Hughes, and Daniel Ragen, all natives of Ire land and laborers on that section of the iroad. It appears that these unfortu nate men were at work under a bank *«f earth, when it suddenly fell in, and crushed them to death. The body of file firit named was dreadfully mau- . gled, and it is believed that not a bone was left unbroken; the scull ol the "second was fractured; the third was Suffocated by the earth; and the neck and both thighs of the fourth were -broken. The Verdict of the jury was \in conformity of these facts. Two - Ither laborers were at work at the toame spot, one of whom had both ol \his legs broken, and the other escaped with slight injury.—Baltimore Jitncr. Mrs. Eunice Nickerson, wife of Capt. David Nickerson, of Brewster, illass. caiUe to her death under the (following horrible circmnstanees-— (She was°reading alone by the lire, the bother members of the family having Tetired, when her clothes took fire sup posed from the lamp. As soon as she dis Covered it, she ran to fhe back kitchen for w#ter*,but found it frc'zen bard in the pail;sbethen ran out doors &rolled her self in the snow, at the same time screaming for assistance. .Her cues of distress reached the ears ol Mr. Smith, a neighbour who got up, dressed, procured a lantern, aud went H pursuit of the object, supposes it to be some one who had been hurt by a fall. He found Mrs. N. a few yards ffoin hishousiU nearly exhausted, and folding herself up by the fence, burnt tn a most shocking manner, her clothes consumed and so much burnt that the skin and nails were left on the fence by w hich she was supported. Mr. S. took her to his house, when, after extreme suffering for twenty- four hours, she died. Burns.—In looking over the Alle ghany Democrat of the 29th Decem ber, I discovered a small paragraph on burns, stating that the immediate application of the simple article of Hour to the part effected, W'as discov ered by 3 Dr. r Michael Ward, of Man chester, Ehglafad, to be a speedy and effectual cure. 1 bore it in mind, that the first opportunity offered I would test the virtue of the remedy. t)n last evoniiig my little daughter, -aboht eleven years did, was unfortu nately badly scalded on one leg and Toot, by the oversetting of a small ves sel of scalding water. I immediate ly applied a handful of wheat flour, to the scalded part and wrapped it up with a cloth; the child was in great agony and pain; in about 20 minutes fche began to be a little cased of pain; I then removed the first application of flour, and as directed by Dr. Ward covered the effected part twice more iat intervals of about 15 minutes, by ■sprinkling on by a flour drudger. The pain was entirely removed in half an pour; the patient slept sound all night, and as she expressed herself, she did not recollect she was burned, until *he went to rise the next morning.— My reasons for stating these facts are, that l wish every family to know this fcpeedy and effectual cure, as in eve ry house the remedy is at hand, and touch misery may be prevented by its 'pad.. S. T. CIIEROKRE PIICEN1X, *find Indians' Jidvocatc. T HE SUBSCRIBER corn.iieiiced the duties of his station, as editor of this impel, with a tremlilinghand and a reluct*, ant heart. He had no experience to aid him, and hut limited information to rccum* mend him to the public. He has however progressed so far, generally, to the satisfac* tion of his readers, for which he is thankful* As the first volume of the. Phcenix is on the eve of closing, the editor has thought best to apprize tne public that a new volume will be commenced next month, and that the great object of its founders, the. benefit of the Cherokees, will still he assid uously pursued. It is unnecessary to re* peat and particularize the principles under which the future numbers of the Phu nit will be conducted—the principles will L* similar to those which have governed tha past numbers. The paper is sacred to the cause of Indians, and the editor will fee! himself especially bound as far as his time, talents ami information will permit, to ren»- der it as instructive and entertaining as possible to his brethren, and endeavor to enlist the friendly feelings and sympathies of his subscribers abroad, in favor of tha aborigines. As the present policy of the General Government, the removal of all the Indians beyond the limits of organized States or Territories, is assuming «n important aa» peel, the editor will feel himself bound to lay before his readers all that may be said on this subject, particularly the objections against this measure of the Oovernment. Paiticular attention will be given to ju dicious miscellany. Choice pieces on re ligiott and morals, domestic economv tk.e. will find a ready admittance in the Phj nix The original part of the paper will be. rendered as interesting as the means of the editor will allow* Owing to the want cl an assistant, it is impossible to devote a ia . ge portion of the paper to the Cherokee tana guage, as the whole mutt be original—1 he editor will however do what he can. 1 he friends of Indians are particularly called Upon to assist in this undertaking by their subscriptions. Thus far, the Phani* has been a dead expense to the propne* tors. It is highly desiral! that there should be sufficient patronage to secure if from the like pecuniary emharras-rnent in future ELIAS BOUP'NOTIV tow Lcfoto, C. A T . ftb, lift.
