DIED at South Orange, N, J.
David&Jonatiian Brown,the former
«n Thursday afternoon, the 30th of
April, and the latter on Saturday
morning, the 2d May. . These two
deceased persons were twin brothers,
31 years of age. Their parents,
who are no more in this world, called
them Jonathan and David, in allu
sion to two ancient worthies, whose
names are recorded on the page of
sacred history; and their whole lives
evinced that no two names could
have been more appropriately chosen;
for the most endearing intimacy and
friendship have existed between them
from their early years, and what holy
writ records of the worthies after
lvhom they were named, is applica
ble to them, “the soul of Jonathan
was knit with the soul of David, and
Jonathan loved him as his own soul”
—and “as they were lovely and plea
sant in, their lives,” so “in their death
they were not much divided.” Da
vid was suddenly and unexpectedly
seized with mental derangement,
which so afflicted and oppressed Jona
than that,in a few days, he fell a vic
tim to the same. They died so near
ly together as to receive their funer
al rites on one and the sune occasion.

The Executive Committee of the JlmeA
can Temperance Society, deeming it hip
porjant that a publication should be corn
merited under the patronage of I he Society,'
and for the promot.on of its j,articular ob
jects, issue the following Prospectus ol'a
weekly Paper, entitled,
THE JOURNAL OF HUMANITY,
and Herald of the Amer. Tempeycncc Son,
i he Joukm.-.l of Humanitv is intended
to be a v ehicle of intelligence respecting all
tire Temperance Societies in our country.
It will lay before the public the plans, and
methods of operation, adopted by the Pa-
rent Society, and by others. It will con
tain communications adapted to gcneial u-
tility, on the subject of temperance, and
Reviews of w ell written books and pamph
lets relative to the same subject, ft will
also j.uy particular attention to the subject
oi pauperism and of prison discipline. In
short, ibis Journal will make the public ac
quainted with all facts suitable for publica
tion, and adapted to promote the success of
the cause of humanity.
1 his Paper will not only oppose intern^
perance in the use of spirituous liquors, and"
in all its other forms, hut will aim to sup
press all kindred vices. As its t.ile im
ports, its object will be to advance the
cause of humanity, in the largest sense: icf
alleviate the ^ilf'erings and woes ol man,
and to promote liis domestic, social, and
civil welfare.
It is proper to sav explicitly, that neith<
ci religious nor political controversy is any
part oi the object, of this Paper. What
ever religious principles an; introduced,'
J'lli he such as are directl) adapted to pro
mote Christian Morals, and such as will
meet the approbation ol all who fear God.
and reverence the -acred Scr ptures.
I his Jouren- will contain summary ac*
counts ol ii er .ting events in the moral,
religious, and political world; and will
notice.whatever relates to improvements in
uselul arts, ' specially in the education of
children and youth.
1’ mally, it is the intention of (he exec.a2
live committee that Iho Journal of Human*
ily shall be enriched by tho r .most import,
ant information which can he derived from
foreign Journals of various kinds, and ip
t he different languages of Europe,—that in
formation especially which relates to the
cause of benevolence, humanity, letters,'
and civij society. And with special re
ference io tins department, ii is tlw inten
tion oi the Committee to add another Edi
tor, as soon as the prospects of’the Journal
will justify tile measure.—It is hoped that,
in tins way, (he Journal will ultimately
secure a patronage widely extended, a net
extended among the reading and intelli
gent: classes of the community.
1 fie publication is not in any degree d,
matter of personal interest or gain. The
avails of it will be applied faithfully and
exclusively to promote ihc benevolent ob
ject of the Am. Temperance Society, as
set lorfli :n .ts constitution.
It would be a subject of sincere regret
with those who are concerned in fhiv pub*'
1/calion, ii it should interfere with the cir
culation ol any of the useful and excellent,
papers, already devoted to the cause of
temperance and humanity. But a regard
to the judgment and wishes oi wise and
good men in different portions of cm.
country, and (o the paramount importance
of ihe object of the Society, has prevailed
over all personal considerations. •
The'Committee indulge the hope that
the designs and arrangements mentioned^
above, will meet the approbation of the
community, and will’be carried into spee
dy execution. If this*country is to be
saved from ruin, it is high time for those
who love its precious interests, to awake
to vigorous, united, and persevering ex
ertion. A more particular develonrment
of the plan And principles of the Journal
will be given in the first Number,
In behalf jif the Executive Committee;
of the American Temperance Society, and
with thfeir concurrence.

CHARLESTON OB

rffMIE Character of fibs paper, it is pre-
■1- sumed, is so well known, that nothing
heed be said on that point. It was com
menced with a very limited subscription in
January 3 , 1827, and its patronage has ever
since been confined almost exclusively to the
Presbyterian and Congregational Churches
of this and the adjoining States. A gradu
al incmise of subscribers, together with
numerous and unexpected assurances that
our labors have, been favorably regarded by
those whose good opinion it is* an honor o
possess, induces the hope that a subscription
paper in the hands of its friends may prove
an efficient means of rj tending its eircula-4
lion. If every individual, who takes a
pleasure in perusing the Observer, would
use but a slight effort to gain addit ional sub
scribers, we arc persuaded that our sub
script ion list would soon be doubled.
The Editor, grateful for past, encourag;,-.,,
ment, intends hcrafter devoting his wliole^
time to the paper, and will use every possi
ble effort to render it still more intere-tin<*
and useful:—and for any assistance Which
may be afforded him in the prosecution of f
his laborious and responsible duties, he will
* ever feel unfeignedly thankful.
The annual price of the 6i)servf.b to
city subscribers, is £3 50, in advance, or
£4 if payment is delayed to the end ofthe
year—to country subsciibnrs £3in advance,
or.£3 50 at tho end of the year Any per
son who shall obtain five new subscribers
on these terms, and become responsible for
them, shall be entitled to a copy witboi*:
charge. ' ^
