eitht r the original plates engruvod by tho
American bunk note company have horn
allowed to g- L into improper hands, or
th is facsimile wu obtain- .1 by the electro
typo process. On tho first hypothesis it is
difficult to *co why tho genuine face was

by cloclrolyping.
The probablo reason f«>r the faro not
having been oloctrntyped i^ that tho vig

upon several pieces, while tho hack is
one. In connection with the eleelrotypo

view of tho adoption of tho process, and
that such a multiplication of idatos was
characterized at tho time as independent,
it is known that bill plates huvo been
boxed ut the Trea-ury and sent to Now

in this manner may have fallen into im

in tiio earlier stages of making llioso plateH
