Thousands of people need rope, and this is a good time and a good plnco to get it. Mossrs. Conant & Young have opened in New York a commission house for tho sale of produce and the purchasn of all kinds of goods. Tho senior member of tho firm is an old raerehnntof character and standing in Now York, whilo the ju nior ono is the son of Mr. \V. II. Daniel Cord ray, oxocutor, will sell at the Courthouse in this city, in December next, some good land. The^ews of tho Baptist Church will bn rented on Monday morning next, at ten o'clock. Cool Weather.—Thursday and Friday mornings felt refreshingly cool and bracing. Some persons say that there was a slight frost on Thursday morning, but perhaps they wero mistaken. Cortainly tho thormometcr did not indicato so low a temperature, about GO degrees being tho lowest mark wo havo observed. Among tho indications of tho near ap proach of “White Jaelj,” wero “pos sums" in the market yosterday. We saw several, but they did not show that state of fatness that makes tho “varmint" de sirable for the table. The air was rather chilly yestetday evening, and perhaps still cooler woathor is at hand, ^ Jewell Warehouse.—Wo see that tho work of rebuilding this extensive ware house is being carried on with dispatch. Tho walls aro rapidly rising again upon their old foundations. Messrs. Fontaine A Hughes will have it ready as soon ns the roceipts of cotton here are largo enough to require such a warehouse, and in the meantime they havo amplo storage room for all cotton consigned to them. Jlogs»—The Northwestern market re ports still indicato high prices for pork this winter. Tho Cincinnati Journal of Qtmmerce of the 30th ult. says : The demand for hogs has beon fjlly up to the receipts, and tho market has ruled stoady at full prices. Wo quote light averages $11, medium $12, and heavy $13 fa; 13 50, per cental gross. Tho demand from the packers for future delivery has been good, but owing to tho extreme firm ness of the drovers, and tho high prices asked, but litlIo has boon donn. Tub 1’akdon Business.—Tho pardon biihiness of tho Attorney Cienernl’s office has become so great as to necessitate a clerical forco and office room for which there is no provision by law.consrquently Mr. Pleasants, the chief pardon clerk, and bis assistants, are greatly overworked, while the bureau has really become one of great importance, especially to pardon seekers. To illustrate tho amount of busi ness passing through this office, it mav be noted that a largo rack, twelve feet nigh and eight wide, has been erected, which is divided into longitudinal sections run ning the whole length, each section con taining the pardon applications from each State ir. process of passing examination. Virginia, of course, takes the lead, her pile being over ton feet high, and contain ing over three thou.-and applications.— Alabama follows, with a pile of fifteen hundred, upon which the dust is accumu lating, as the President is awaiting the action of tho Alabama State Convention. Georgia is next in order, with a pile of about four font high, containing twelve hundred applications. Mississippi and Nortb-Carolina are about the same, seven bundled each. South Carolina has at least fivo hundrel, Tonneasee throe hun dred, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas about one hundred and fif y each, while Florida, Arkansas Missouri and Western Virginia are very moderate on tho sub ject, and present but a score or two of ap plications. Altogether, there are at least t* n thousand applications in the Attorney General’s office.—NaehvitU Gazette. South Carolina.—A correspondent of the Charleston Cotirior, writing from Sumtor, S. C\, t*» that journal, says: The late struggle lias unquestionably entailed upon us.und our posterity, a long train of evils. Wo are upon the thresh- hold of a penal experience which will be protracted in coming yoars. The loss of public records may bo classed among al most irreparable disasters. In this par ticular South Carolina has greatly suf fered. The State records and papers ofimpor* t:\nce are gono forever. Some of tho districts, Clarendon lor example, havo had the entire contents of their district offices destroyed—titles, deeds, wills, judgments and decrees, havo disappeared in the tlamos of war, and how much o( confu* sion ; how much of litigation; how much of perplexing cnilmrroSi-moiit, and, pera haps, of injustice and fraud may not this involve? St. l*aul is somewhat stirred up bv re ported discoveries of gold and silver- bearing quartz in St. Louis county, in tho northwestern portion of Minnesota. Pro fessor Earners, State (biologist, sponfc tho summer in that region, and ouart'/. which he has discovered has been forwarded to the mint at Philadelphia, where J. R. Eckfoldt, assayer, pronounced the pro portion of gold to the ton to bo $26 63, ami the proportion of silver per ton $4 42. A number of enthusiastic individuals have left on a prospecting tour. A Chinksk Stokv.—There wero two short-sighted men, wh«i were always (juurrelinK ns to which of them could see host; and a* they hoard there whs to be a tablet erected at the gate of a neighboring temple, they determined they would visit it together on u given day and put tho vis ual powers of each to the test. But each desiring to tako advantage of the other, Gliing wont immediately to tho temple, and looking quite close to the tablet saw an inscription with tho words, “To the great man of tho pn*t and the future. Chang also went prying yet closer, and in addition to tho inscription, “To the great man of tho past and tho future,” read from smaller characters, “This tablet was raised by tho family of Ling iu honor of the groat man.” On tho day appointed, standing a dis< tanee from which neithercould read.Ching exclaimed; “Tho inscription is, ‘To tho groat man of tho past and tho future. “True,” said (.'hung, “but you have loft out a part of the inscription which I can read but you cannot, and which is written in small characters: ‘Erected by the fam ily of Ling in honor of the groat man.' ” “There is no such inscription, saidChing. “There is,” said Chang. *So they waxed wroth, and after abusing ono another, agreed to refer tho matter to tho high priest of tho temple.
