Ire dollars, with which sum ho bought a

mseifch Stonemim’s raiders; tho boxes
wen searched to ascertain whether they
contained liquors; Captain Witz gave to
Duncan some tools, picks and shovels, in
order to enable tho prisoners to dig wel ls;

matter to obtain tlu: shovels and picks ; he
telly succeeded in obtaining about sev

U was n common thing to see some of
the tools broken ; about forty or llfty boys
were in tho stockade; Captain Wirz re
quested Dr. White to take them into the
lofpilit te help tho nurses or cooks; ho
aid if ho hud his way ho would send these

l)r. White, as tho small pox was increas

man who refused to bo vaccinated, tbut
h#did not cure if the man should die, tho
order not having been given by himself.
The chain gang was formed by Wirr.'s
orders, when a plot had been matured by
the prisoners to escape; Wir/. said be

beaten, killed, or shot a man.
“dr. Baker uskod witness if such a thing
had been done, was he not in such a rela
tion to the prison that ho would havo
known of tho circumstance?
Colonel (Jhipmun objected to the ques-
h°n, for the reason, mainly, that tho
fceceptanco of tho answer would place too
much reliant on the negative testimony
(, !.tb0 witness, which was simply an
opinion.
Mr. Baker briefly argued that tho ques
tion was $ legitimate one, and one which
m ah criminal prosecutions could pro
perly be asked.
Court sustained tho objection of

asked tho Judge Advocflte to stop repeat
edly, but the latter paid no attention tQ
them. If he was thus to bo treated, there
was but littlo use in putting witnesses on
the stand.
Tho President informed Mr. Baker that
hn had been repeatedly told he must mako
his objections to the Court and not to tho
Judge Advocate.
Tho cross-examination of the witness
was then resumed:
\yitncss testiliod positively that Captain
Wirz was not on duty at Andor.sonville
from the 4th to tho 80th of August.
Georgo W. J. Reynolds testiliod that ho
was taken prisoner as a spy in Tennessee,
made his escape, Inr. was recaptured in
Mississippi and sent to Richmond ; af or-
ward he was transferred to Andersunvilie,
whero ho arrived in Juno, 1804 ; ho acted
as a prison sutler, and also as a magistrate;
mon were brought before him for stealing,
who were punished by Hogging, being set
to work and watched ; a number of men
wore banded together, and took by force
what was not their own—such as watches,
money, clothing, food, and tin cups; a
police force was organized to put down
tho “Raiders” ; this police force was called
tho ‘‘Regulators” ; on one occasion the
Raiier9 trmd to put down tho Regulators.
the latter called lor and obtained
HRbistanco from Captain Wirz; eleven of
tho Raiders were arrested, six of whom
were hanged, and five wore placed in the
chain gang.
The witness amongour surprising state
ments said there were live* or six working
shoemakers in tho stockade, as many tail
ors, and two watchmakers.
The witness also to-tilie.1 that tho streets
of tho camp were tilled with “soup job*
ber.-,” and at tho roughly-constructed ta
bles could be bought colice, tea, ham and
eggs, etc., etc.; there wero live hundred
bakers in tho stockade who baked and
sold pies and cakes; there was plenty of
flour, saleratus, etc.
Witness had an establishment called tho
“novelty store ;” ho had a greater variety
of articles than any other person in camp ;
ho sold flour, hams, chickens, pepper, sor
ghum, beans, peas, etc., beside medi: incs.
Witness further testified there was a
half million of greenback currency in
camp. There worn also in camp barber
shops, clothiers and brokers. The latter
were engaged in buying paper money,
checks, and gold and silver. There were
also jewelry shops in the camp, and in
one of those he saw fifty watches and a
munbor of breastpins and rings to bo re
paired. Tho owner of this shop kept a
journeyman.
The witness also testified that there were
also fuel and lumber merchants at the
prison at Andcrsonvilb', and that lots of
ground wore purchased ut re isonahlo rates
within the stockade, on which shanties
were eroctcd. There were also gamblers
there, who had runners out to hunt up
victims.
Tho witness testified to many other
things, showing that extensive trade and
tholl was cartdod on at the prison. Tho
mon sufl’red from RXjiosure, but ho could
not say that the^suflered from hunger.
The witness said there were about a
thousand dealers in various kinds of food
and goods at tho prison.
The Court then adjourned.
Important Declarations of General
Grant.
1*1111.ADKLPmA, Oct. 4, 1805.—It is es
tablished beyond a doubt that in conver
sation with a distinguished Illinoisan, a
few days sincoj* Liout. Gen. Grant so far
varied from his customary roticenco on
public topics as to unreservedly express
himself on the Mexican question, lie de
clares that the Government will vindicate
the Monroo doctrine at an curly day, and
that Maximilian must leave Mexico.
It will bo, he says, loss expensive to rid
Mexico of the presence of an enemy than
to guard our bordors against him. It is
his opinion Unit it will require no call for
troops; but that with our present army
wo can spare enough to give effectiveness
to tho forces Mexico will bo ready to put
in the field if our Governmoht aids in the
matter of supplies. Gen. Grant i3 of tho
opinion that the President and lho au
thorities at Washington hold this as a set
tled purpose, and only await tho meeting
of Congress to take open ground in the
matter.
It is not believed that Franco will bo
able to disregard European complications
present and prospective, so as to make tho
cause of MuxitnUlian her own. This so
lution of tho Mexican question must bo
accepted as one of the forthcoming sense-
'ions for tho close of the year.

Only a small arnmint of testimony was
taken before the Wirz military commis
sion yesterday. Among the few witnes
ses was l)r. Joseph Jones, Profe.-sor of
Chemistry in the Medical College of
Georgia, who produced a repork^onoorn-
ing tho diseases in tho Andursonvillo v»cn
which ho made by permission of tho rebel
authorities, depicting the frightful mor
tality among the prisoners, lie described
tho men us “miserable, hopeless and ab
ject in tho extreme,’ it being impossible
to portray their horrible condition. The
greater part of tho day was taken up iri an
explanation by Judge Advocate Chipmun
of his reasons for refusing to permit lead
ing rebels to testily for the defence, and a
reply thereto by Mr. Raker, one of the
counsel for Wirz. Tho Judge Advocate
said he had himself taken the responsibil
ity of revoking subpumas which hud been
granted for the appearance ol' certain men
who were prominent in tho rebellion, in
cluding Robert E. Lee, Joseph K. John
ston, IIowoll Cobb, rebel Secretary of Na
vy Mallory, rebel Exchange Commission
er Ould and others, and he left the court
to sanction or disapprove his action. His
reason for refusing to allow these persons
to tes ify was that they wero eo-conspira-
lors with Wirz in the treason which had
produced tho suflerings and cruelties for
tho infliction of which the latter were bei.
ing tried, and weie therefore inadmissible,
on lho well established principle of law
that one criminal cannot testily in favor
of his accomplice, though he may against
him.
Tho court yesterday finally acceded to
tho request for a short vacation which
Wirz’s counsel have been so long urging,
and adjourned over till next Thursday.

Matrimony, —Wo never remember to
have soon tho Hold canvassed from tho
point of view here chosen. It is presented
for tho consideration of our fair readers :
No one will contond that thero are no
crimes committed by married men. Facts
would look such an assertion out of coun
tenance. Rut it may bo said with truth
that there are very few crimes committed
by married men compared with tho num
ber committed by those who are unmar
ried. Whatever faults Voltaire may have
had, ho certainly showed himself a man
of sense when he said, “Tho more married
men you have, tho fewercrimos there will
ho. Marriage renders a man more virtu
ous and more wise.” An unmarried man
is but hail' of a perfect being, and it ro-
quit es the other half to mako things right;
and it cannot bo expected that in this im
perfect state ho can keep tho straight path
of rectitudo any more than a boat with
one oar, or a bird with ono wing, can keep
a straight course. In nine cases out of
ten, whore married men become drunk-
arils, or where thoy commit crimes against
the peace of the community, the founda
tion of these acts was laid while in a sin
gle state, or whero tho wife is, as is sorno-
times the case, an unsuitable match.
Marriugo changes tho whole current of
a man’s feelings, and gives him a centre
for his thoughts, his affections and his acts.
Here is a home for tho entire man, and the
counsel, tho affection, tho example and tho
interest of his “better hnlf” keep him
from tho erratic courses and from falling
into a thousand temptations to which ho
would otherwise bo exposed. Therefore
the friend to marriago is tho friend to so
ciety and to his country, And we havo
no doubt but that a similar effect is pro
duced by marriage on the woman; though
from the difference in their labors and the
greater exposure to temptation on tho
part of the man, wo have no doubt but
that man reaps a greater advantage from
tho restraining influence of marriago than
woman does.

Still Another Alpine Accident,
A communication from Eriangon, dated
tho 7th ult., says :
Intelligence has been received boro of
another terrible Alpine accident. It ap
pears that tWD students of theology at
Eriangon University, llorrin Chrostin
and Hinsch, accompanied by Nussbau-
mer, a Noukirchen guide, attempted tho
ascont of tho Grossvenodiger, after re
ceiving the assurance that tho enterprise
was quite devoid of danger. They reached
thi. t"p of the mountain safely at noon.
In their descent the student Ilirifcch, fol
lowing the guide Nussbaumer, succooded
in passing over a bridge formed by lrozon
snow across a crevasse, but tho ico broke
beneath liinsch, who was at once precipi
tated, without being greatly hurt in tho
fall, to a depth of one hundred loot down
the crevasse. Tho unfortunate young
man foil until ho wa< jammed in by tho
breast and back, llo shouted for help,
announcing that his arms wore still fteo.
The guide, howevor, lmd not only neg
lected tho precaution of tying tho party
together, but had not even brought a rope
with him. lie called oown to the sufferer
that a rope must bo fetched, and that he
could not be back in loss than eight hours.
“I can’t hold out so long,” was the reply;
“say good-bye for mo to my parents.” A
plaid was thrown down in tho hope of it3
imparting a little warmth, but tho sufferer
was unable to use it, probably soon losing
all power of motion. Jlis friend in the

Interesting Discovery at Pompeii.
Abundant details have-been receivod from
Naples respecting tho freshly uncovered
temple of Juno among the recent excava
tions at Pompeii. Throe hundred skele
tons wore found crowed within tho sanc
tuary, a propitiatory saorlflcu being evi
riently held in the hour they wore over
whelmed. The statue of the goddess,
with attendant peacock, the tripon in fron
of the alter, the golden censor, the jewels
on the person of. the .priestoss, tho rich
vessels holding ft dQjJojit of animal blood,
are tho main particulars dwelt on, uo
chapter in that awful story being more
instructive or interesting. The eyes of
Juno wero of tho most vived onamol, ho
