Arsenic Katisg.-Statements of the most opposite cnuractcr have been current from time to time as to tho existence in Sj’ria of a class of arsenic eaters, who hnb- ituully indulged, with impunity, a taste for this violent irritant poison, and derived various supposed advantages from tho practice. Dr. Von Tachudi’s papnron the subject in 1851 was extensively circulated in this country, and while by some it Whs accepted as veracious it was genera'iy re jected as fabulous. Professor Johnson gave it vogue by adopting it in his Chem istry of Common Life, but Taylor in his standard work “On Poison,” treats tho stories of Syrian arsenic caters ns exagge rated statements utterly inconsistent w.th all that is known concerning tho. action of arsenic, in this ami other countries, and- which but for the literary support of Prof. Johnson would not have required any se rious refutation. Professor Cristisotii ap ropos of tho Waaler case, absolutely de nied thorn in 1855, and treated tho story as "a mass of absurdity’’ and a "pure fa ble.” It dous. indeed, seme incredible that men should swallow so virulent a poi son as arsenic in doses of five and six grains with habitual impunity and even advantages, lioscoo and Hirsch havo, however, furnished of late year-* unequiv ocal evidence that such i* the fact, and in late number of the Pharmaceutical Journal, Dr Craig Mucf'nt lane adduces ad ditional evidence of tho niostcntirely con clusive character. Arsenic eaters prod need in jirosus jic.r* souls; the arsenic which they eat tminre him was taken from duly tested samples, and tho secretions of the arsenic eaters be ing subsequently tested, gave the vaiious chemical reactions indicating tho presence of arsenic. Hero there is no room I'oi scep ticism. linker, one of tho arsenic eaters, slated that ho could not do wiLhout his dose of arsenic, which he took at intervals varying from four to eight days; that when ho has a distance of walk to hiswork ho takes a larger dose, und is then in good spirits for about eight days; that if, how ever, he intermits it for fourteen days, he feels still’in tho feet, with craving for an other dose; tho nfseni: 1 helps his digoss tion. Ho stated that all ar.-onic eaters an* healthy; and that ho bolioved that, as with opium, if the dose bo gradually di minished, an arsenic eater can break him self of tho habit. It is evident that we must modify tho opinion formerly held, that although tho human body muy be brought to bear with impunity gradually increasing doses of vegetable poisons, such a? opium, it is nut so with mineral poi-ons. Evidently, a tolerance can be established of arsenic, ono of the most violent of min eral irritants. Found Dead.—We are informed that some of the city police force found a ne gro woman dead, near Montgomery and West Point ruilroa-l depot, mi Wednes day evening lust. She had been “con fined'' in the woods, and was subsequent ly placed in a dirt car, where she died from starvation and neglect, her infant, in tho meantime, having been oaten n;» hy swine. This is n s*d commentary upon the unhappy condition of number:} of tho colored race, who lmvo no ono to caro for them now. "How pitiful, A whole cil v full,’’ ami not a solitary individual fooling suf ficient interest in this unfortunate crea ture's welfare to t*avo her from a miserable death.
