This (Mi-ifpemtiou cannot lm giv en, to tho lull extent, due, unless we elect men to Cdugrortt who can obtain admis sion into that body. Why should we particularly desire tola* represented in the present Congress ? Because ugreat contest, in which wo an* the most inter ested party, is to lie decided by that body. It hurt to decide whether the Drosident’rt policy of leaving to eneli State the control of ith own domestic af fairs is to prevail, or whether Congress will dictate terms to these States, and such terms as will be most odious to us. Wo ought to give the President und the conservative numbers of Congress all possible aid, because they stand between us and tho radicals and have to contend with groat odds in the present Congress. Another consideration : If we elect men to Congress who cannot take the prescribed oath, they will In* rejected on that ground, and the radicals will go before the country for approval of the aot with an argument that can hardly fail to sustain them before the people of the North. But if our Bepresentativos can take tin* oath, and proposo to do so, tiny must either lu* admitted or rejected for some other cause. That other causa must be tho refusal of the people of tho South to rooogni/e ne^ro equality. That is precisely the issue wo wish to compel these radicals to make, if they are de termined to make an issue upon which to exclude our representatives. We have Been by tho result of the Connecticut election how they will fare upon this issue, even in New England. If is an issue which they will sc< k to ami,/, and to which we must hold them that is, ip we have to be excluded from Congress at all.
